Re: The Revolution (Wii) is Here.
I think an important thing about their choice of name, including leaving off the "Nintendo" as being part of its official moniker, is that they do not want to instantly alienate that group of non-gamers. They want the Wii to seem like something new - something fun and intriguing. Not "the newest awesome game console" that many non-gamers would dismiss without giving a second thought.
Gamers will buy it because... well, they're gamers! And who could resist it at such a good price with such interesting possibilities? This is practically a given.
But the key point is! Non-gamers will be intrigued by it as well, which is what Nintendo is really getting at with their marketing. Non-gamers will look at the PS3 and the Xbox 360 and think "oh, there's that stupid thing my son/grandson/boyfriend/etc. wastes so much time and money on." But that's not how they'll see the Wii.
