Fusion was sprite based, man. You must be thinking Metroid: Prime.

I didn't care for the NES one, or rather... I can't stand playing it now. It's not fun anymore. Fusion was incredibly linear (all of the games are to an extent, but this one is especially so) and you get stuck a lot. Prime was fun, but I got really bored with it about 3/4ths of the way through. Metroid 2 gets major bonus points for me for having so much to do and was the least linear Metroid game (as in, you do do what you want when you want, and it's not I got this item, I can now backtrack all the way yo here to go this way to get this item to go here, etc etc.)

But Super Metroid offered me the most fun out of them all.
