I could tell you the same tired story about the heroes of the Iliad and how the Greeks engineered the fall of Troy, but I'm not going to. The thing is, wars aren't won by heroes. We remember them for the huge impact they have, but they're all still just people, even if they have a few godlike traits.

No, this is going to be a story about the journey more than the people. But to ground ourselves, we'll focus on these names:
