It kind of bothers me that when the tournament starts there's a bit of a wariness/reserve/suspicion that undercuts compliments that someone gets for an impressive score by people in the same division, as if there's a feeling of "It's okay if your scores are good as long as mine are better than yours"

And I just feel like that's so not the spirit of FFR and the Brag Board, where the community should be celebrating other peoples' improvements first and foremost

No, you're right, it's just that improving your levelranks, let alone in a setting as cutthroat as a tournament, means that in the process of moving up you're bumping someone else down.
