Re: StepMania Fun Facts
One more DYK that I wanted to mention but forgot:
Did you know that the South American PIU playing communities actually had their own dedicated builds of StepMania for creating and playing missions proprietary to those builds? This has actually been going on since 2008 or so, back when the user Aldo_MX created a custom fork of 3.9 that actually supported ticks (although not controllable). v1toko continued the charge by modifying a StepMania 4.0 base and adding some popular items used in missions, like potions, mines, fakes, hidden/sudden arrows (also usable as fakes), speed-mod changes (and soon after, the ability to change between lower and higher level difficulties mid-song)! Another really notable thing in newer builds is that you were able to set mission parameters on a particular noteskin (i.e. full combo noteskin 2 or you fail the mission). I actually managed to snag an early build of the StepNX build a while back and created a pretty neat pad-chart + mission with it that caught a lot of attention, including a response from the maker of the editor himself.
Also, another clever one that I made: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsytk76hczw
if I remember correctly, Aldo_MX is occasionally credited in earlier builds of StepMania 5/sm-ssc for some PIU support.
EDIT: Oh, I almost forgot to mention -- at some point, these guys got PIUIO drivers working with their builds (i.e. the builds were usable on arcade machines).
