When you say you never caught on do you mean you never understood why it's so essential for high level gameplay? It's being able to space your character forwards or backwards while still being able to face whatever direction your character is at any certain time.
For marth for instance, a forward dash then wavedash backward to forward smash is pretty much one of marth's deadliest forms of mind games when sweet spotted which pretty much happens naturally because of the spacing it provides. The mind games and spacing potential that wavedashing allows cannot be replicated by a dodge roll. It's simply too slow and too easy to predict for someone to follow up with a grab to combo etc. Wavedashing backward to forward dash to grab-upthrow to rest for jigglypuff on certain characters is amazingly rewarding (i'm a jigglypuff main). It's all about the mind games man.
The only way to really get into the scene and get down all the technicalities of the game is to find local competitive smashers. Your best bet is smashboards. Melee players notoriously get together and play all the time. We have get togethers of upwards to 20 people with 8 tv's at my friends house 4-5 times a week.

That's because you only semi-seriously played brawl. A game that rewards defensive play and caters to a much much much more casual gamer.
