I learned that little lesson about ez-board-type boards VERY fast =p
Anyways, don't gulp down gallons of water before you play... Just 30 minutes before you go to play, get yourself a big glass of water and sip on it for a while. When you leave for the arcade bring a water bottle. (Or if you play at home, get more water and have it somewhere nearby so you can grab in inbetween songs) If you gulp down lots of water you'll get cramps in your side, much like you said. Getting some potassium helps, too - I heard bannanas were good for this, but I'm sure there's plenty of other ways to get it.
And yeah, don't be afraid to bar rape. In fact, I bar rape pretty much every song (Unless I'm doing something stupid for fun and don't really care about my score). Always keep your knees somewhat bent. Step on the inside of the sensor, not in the middle, it reduces the amount you have to move, saving time and stamina.
