Actually, they dropped the ability to install custom OS.
Not that that is all that important.
Also hear it's a few seconds slower loading, but considering the nice price point, lower electricity draws, quieter fan, and bitstream audio for Blu-ray, I think it's an ok tradeoff. Not that bitstreaming audio really matters all that much, it's just nice to have the option, especially since it's a common feature among standalone BD players.
Not that I'd buy it anyway. Give me an exclusive game worth caring about or PS2 emulation and I'll jump at it, but until then, I'm doing fine with my 360 and standalone BD player.

Good emulation would allot memory on the harddrive as simulated memory cards.
A problem if you have an existing save file, but it is entirely workable.

A lot of the components of the PS3 were extremely pricey when it dropped, primarily the Blu-ray drive. But as Blu-ray has become more popular and in demand, cost of manufacture has gone down. I think Sony is STILL taking a loss on every PS3 sold though, so the inner components are still quite expensive.
