The extremeness of this situation comes from his motivation of the act rather than the act itself. He didn't abuse the animal out of sadistic pleasure, he didn't do it because the animal did something bad, he didn't do it because he was stressed out.

He did it to be cool on the Internet.

He was entirely aware of what he was doing, and if the prosecution decides to press the matter, he definitely deserves to be tried as an adult. Anyway, animal abuse is seriously not a very big deal. It's not like he'll be put away for life regardless of how he's tried.

This is hardly an extreme case. Yeah, he posted it on the internet. Now guess what happens. A clinical psychiatrist will say that he was an adolescent with the brain of an adolescent. That means that the kid acted out of impulse rather than actually sitting and thinking out what he was doing. He's 14. There is no way that will be tried as an adult. There has not been a trial of that extremity since the 1940s where a young man in California murdered another young girl and got sentenced to death. (might have been '39) Either way, this kid won't even be considered for jail time, at least, not in a real jail.
