Yes, most lyrics are (#$% pointless, I'm sick of all this nu-rock w/e the hell it is, sick of whiny ass emo...thanks to MTV we have pop music now...thanks to the same bastards who screwed main-stream rock over...

Some nu-rock isn't bad, and I hate that there is an "Emotional" genre in music when all music has emotional values, but I do understand that mainstream music for the most part has become watered down to gain more money. I mean shit, mainstream rappers are some of the worst rappers around, and the rappers with skill are labeled as underground because they refuse to give into the bullshit. It's not a smart idea to just give up on all vocal music, there are a bunch of good artists that still give a shit about what they say (ex. A perfect circle, MSI, Killswitch Engage, Dream Theatre, etc.). Another problem with music today is that people put stereotypes on certain genres of music, making them hate or act like they hate a genre just because they might be laughed at for listening to it. That is just stupid, the point of music is to listen to the lyrics and listen to the composition of the music, and widen your horizons.
On the point of music affecting my views; lyrics might change my views in some things, but otherwise music can only re-enforce what i already think. It all depends, but I'm the kind of person that will take in everything to get all points of view. For the most part it can only affect my views in minor ways, unless it sheds light on certain topics (Tupac's 2pacalypse or Immortal Technique do this).
