It sounds like a waste to get accurate monitors when you are outputting sound directly from your laptops onboard audio. It would be a better investment to get an interface with a quality DA...

What do you mean by patent costs? As far as I know, patents are for ideas, inventions etc, and not music. I don't think music can be patented but it can be copyrighted.
