you're just a wee bit late there homeslice. it ended about 14 hours ago.
and sc: for round 2... i played a long and easy widget-only song. no sound, less than normal screencut. wound up with 1 perfect and about 60% averages and 40% goods... 40 or so misses. |
Re: Devonin's Critical Thinking Tourney Two - COMPLETED
Oh. Also... the answer to mental 9:
Sum of 3 outer numbers divided by the sum of the digits in the sum. 5+6+7 = 18. 1+8 = 9. 18/9 = 2. Which is why 3 of the ones are divisible by 9. But, the upper left doesn't work dividing by 9.... so... the upper left total is 42. 4+2 = 6. 42/6 = 7. 7 is the answer. Rubix is the only person who solved that.... I also posted it on another forum about 2 days after devonin posted it here, and not one person has solved it there either. |
Re: Devonin's Critical Thinking Tourney Two - COMPLETED
Wow, can't believe I neglected to submit so many rounds and bonuses. So this is why my credits randomly jumped. =P

Re: Devonin's Critical Thinking Tourney Two - COMPLETED
It wasn't too bad if you used "reasonable Occam's-Razor statistical logic". By this I mean "most likely Dev is not going to be super evil and create a bunch of red herrings -- if I find a cool pattern, it's likely relevant to the final answer in some form". The only "red herring" in this case was the fact that the first three sum to numbers ending in 0, but this was mainly because I misunderstood the problem at first. Once I noticed that the inner numbers were the ANSWERS, that means the resulting numbers were numbers ending in 0 minus the answer, which is peculiar and led me to this reasoning:
e.g. "There's no way that the fact that the first three are divisible by 9 is a coincidence. Therefore there must be some rule that actually applies to all four of these boxes and just-so-happens to produce a /9 for the first three, but something else for the fourth one. Since the /9 must come from these numbers, I should figure out how to work the numbers in the first three boxes to somehow yield a /9, and then see if this rule works on the fourth box" After thinking of it in this manner I got the answer pretty quickly |
Re: Devonin's Critical Thinking Tourney Two - COMPLETED
i did think of that logic.... but i didn't pursue it very far, or think about it very long. oh well.

Re: Devonin's Critical Thinking Tourney Two - COMPLETED
I think I donated 200k credits to this tourney. Was it ever used as a prize? If so, kool. If not, I'd like to ask for the credits back.
