Michelle Obama visited our school...
...two weeks ago today. The event came about after the schoolboard called her to come speak to our students and other members of our community to try and get more voters for Pennsylvania's upcoming primary that will hold a big part in deciding the Democratic Presidental candidate. She came to talk to the students about various topics like what Mr. Obama's life was like and how he grew up and earned respect rather than it coming naturally. I thought she was a very good speaker, she didn't use notes or a script or anything, it all came from the heart and she really ment it. And, to be honest, she didn't really talk much about the upcoming race at all.
However, there came to be some issues with the fact that the schoolboard supported one politician over another. Of course, the schoolboard had to have voted to temporarily suspent the policy regarding having politician on district property (which they did) and now more members who were absent from the vote are speaking out against it, saying they are disappointed to be a member of the town. More and more, people are wearing "Clinton 08" and "Vote Obama" pins and there are even students trying to hold pep rallies on school grounds. For those of you who are familliar with previous supreme court cases, you'll know that Abington (my school district) has already gone down this path and lost to a boy named Ellery Schempp, who brought a Qu'ran to school to read instead of a Bible. Still, the schoolboard stands by its decision, saying it was a positive experience for young students and the postives greatly outweigh the negatives. My question to you is do you think it's right for the schoolboard to temporarily suspend the policy regarding partisan politics just because an important politician (or wife of one) came to the school to speak? And if you were on the schoolboard, what would you have voted? |
Re: Michelle Obama visited our school...
I think the right answer is "It is ridiculous for a school board to forbid the presence of politicians who wish to address the youth of the country on important issues"
Obviously they can't pick and choose who to allow, but if someone from the campaign of Senator McCain also wants to go to your school and speak, why shouldn't they be allowed to? |
Re: Michelle Obama visited our school...
I totally agree with what you're saying, but if just 1 member from 1 party comes, does that strike you as odd that the administration can just change the rules however they wish to support 1 political candidate with 1 opinion on the matter?

Re: Michelle Obama visited our school...
The rule as it is probably only exists to prohibit excessive campaigning on a high school campus. Lifting the rule for a politician for a day does not allow for campaigning on campus as much as allowing for a speech to inform the students of the situation. I'm sure that if another politician were to speak they would be given the opportunity, but if Obama's crew were to return they would be denied for the simple reason that they had their time and now it's someone else's turn.

Re: Michelle Obama visited our school...
School choice effectively rids the world of all of these controversies because parents have the choice to let or not let their children attend schools that do this.
Not that it should be too much of a controversy in the first place. Quote:
