Re: ShineyThighz Avi/Siggy Requests
People like the compression quality of png images better than jpg. Idk if Dragonz had something else in mind for the reason though.

Re: ShineyThighz Avi/Siggy Requests
Here's a better note.
Save all animated files as GIFs, because that's the main non-Flash file type that supports animation, as far as I'm aware. However, GIF files only have one degree of transparency. This is when you use PNG files. Whenever you have pixels with different opacities or something with anti-aliased edges, you should save the file as a PNG-24. (PNG-8 files are just like GIFs except they're more compressed but without animation support). JPGs are typically used for images with more colors, like photos. The way JPG files compress is a bit weird, and it makes pixel art look like ****. These first two images are my avatar saved as a GIF and a PNG-8 with 256 colors. You can't tell because the FFR forum background is so light... But if you copied the image in to Photoshop, you'd see that the edges have gray and near-white pixels around them. When you save a file with different degrees of opacity as a PNG-8 or a GIF, you select a background color, and what were semi-transparent pixels become fully-transparent pixels as if they were placed over that background color. Both of these images have 256 colors. Note that the PNG file is slightly smaller (in terms of file size) than the GIF file. The third image is saved with only 32 colors. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here's the avatar saved as a JPG. Note that there is no transparency. The first image is with the quality at 100, then at 50, then at 0. The differences are easier to tell when zoomed in in Photoshop. The file size of the first JPG image here is larger than that of the PNG-8 and GIF files, but it's smaller than the file size of my PNG-24 avatar. The file size of the 50% image is smaller, and the 0% quality image is even smaller. You can look at the differences between the compression algorithms of PNG and JPG files. The PNG file with 32 colors is a little smaller than the JPG with 50% quality. Apparently, JPG images get the highest quality image for the fewest kilobytes. A 4 KB PNG of my avatar would have only four colors. The 0% Quality JPG is about 4 KB (and though ****y, looks much better than an image with only four colors). Whenever I save a file I'm going to be posting on the internet (like, not my .psd files) , I always go to File > Save for Web to optimize the file. Yeah. I have no idea why Chidori believes avatars shouldn't be saved as a .png. Being blunt: JPG: Images with many colors (i.e. photos). GIF: Animations. PNG-8: Non-animated logos. PNG-24: Images with varying transparency. |
Re: ShineyThighz Avi/Siggy Requests
Wow quite the note there =] you shound create a new thread for it and try to get it set up as a sticky =] lol.
Thanks though! I'm still kinda new to the whole digital art thing, since i only got my actual tablet recently. Witch means up until then i have really had no reason to get in depth with the whole saving them as a certain file... Loved the: "Being blunt: JPG: Images with many colors (i.e. photos). GIF: Animations. PNG-8: Non-animated logos. PNG-24: Images with varying transparency." lol! you could have just send that and i would've gotten it :) lol |
Re: ShineyThighz Avi/Siggy Requests
what is a PNG-8 8's the comppression level? i only said not avis because when i make them they ussaly go over the file size (i think subscribers have a bigger file limit)

Okay i'm done your avi :)
![]() i dont know exactly how it will look on your profile but i tried to make it look like your profile, its also fairly simple, and clean i could have made it trasparent (The background), but then when you post in the forums it looks just white, witch would be kind of werid, but if you dont post in the forums let me know ten i'll get rid of the background and make it Flush with your profile background  - Shiney |
