What all fear leads to?

Got this off of the "Worst Fear" thread in chit chat (only read the first few posts :P)

Now, we all know what fear is, or at least feels like. We've all felt it. Or at least I'm pretty sure. :P

But, what I think is that all fear leads down to the fear of death. For example, being claustrophobic would be being afraid of the walls closing in on you, and eventually squishing you to death. Spiders, being that you would get bitten by one and get poisoned and die, etc. etc.
So, all fear leads to the fear of death.

But wait, what about parents that are scared of their children being killed (bitten, ran over by car, drown, etc. etc.)? It's the instinct to continue the species. All animals have it. It's natural for a parent to be worried about their kid because it's biological. The parent(not knowing it of course) feels they need to continue the species.

Post your thoughts.

What about the fear of the colour red?

While alot fo fears pertain to death, others may pertain to disabilities (ie: paralysis, deafness, etc).

Then there's the phobiaphobiacs... the irony in itself.

like was said, it would depend on the fear. I don't understand a lot of them, for example (as was said earlier) the color red. The only thing i might think could put that with death is maybe something someone saw that triggers the reaction. "I saw this happen and it could happen to me too" kind of thing.

The more common ones, like fear of heights, fear of water are more direct, fear of falling and dying, or fear of drowning... they could obviously be linked to death.

maybe they're mind has subconsously(sp?) linked that thing to death? If its due to chemical imbalaces or whatnot its possible i suppose

Not counting irrational fears (such as using the telephone or the fear of the number 13), there are still fears that don't relate to death.

I will have to go get the entire list from my dad, but all fears can be summed up into 5 or 6 catagories, IIRC. Death is one of them, of course. Fear of poverty is another. Fear of the loss of love of someone (not like, death, but that someone you care for will stop caring for you) is another biggie. I believe the fear of old age is another (as in, you fear being crippled and not able to function fully, not so much that you're going to die soon after). I can't recall the other ones.

Well...I think the large majority of fear besides the completely irrational can be linked to continuing the species. Thus it is linked to the instinctual continuation of the species, because if you are dead well you can't, and if you are crippled or disabled your chances are extremely low. Like the ones Laharl mentioned, Fear of Death= You're dead you can't reproduce
Fear of poverty= This may have to do with modern society, but in todays world if you're very poor your not likely to reproduce
Fear of Loss of Love=You lose your mate, no reproducing, yet again affected by modern society as in years past a man may only have one mate in his lifetime.
Fear of Old Age=I think this may be the fear of getting to be old without reproducing.
No matter how ridiculous this theory may sound to you don't flame me about it because it's all conceptual.

Fear leads to anger, anger leads to the Dark Side.

Fear doesn't always lead to death. In my opinion, it leads to need, want, and deserve. Like...someone who fears being made fun of/being impopular(sp?). they want popularity, but wether or not they deserve it or not is a different story. now let's continue, let's say this kid did get the popularity he wanted, it would lead to something else, greed. possibly, he/she would want to become SO popular, to extent of being the center of attention at his school/work/wherever. make sense? no i didn't think so, but i hey i tried. :P

jazzmosis 03-24-2004 01:11 AM

(Unpopular.)

Fear can really lead anywhere if you think about it. While a lot of fears lead to death, one small fear (say of spiders) could have a chain reaction with a sprawling effect. It is not so much the spider you're afraid of, it is what the spider can/would do to you (a bite, in most cases). Person in question assumes bite is poisonous, poison leads to infection/disease, diseases lead to lack of body functions, which COULD ultimately lead to death. However for the most part - that spider is afraid you're going to eat it for all you know.

Learning to curb fears is what should be a priority. But not like Fear Factor, which really would compound fears rather than dispose of them (that and prove humans really will do anything for money.).

My two cents.
