Modern Advertising

Sucks.

I just saw two commercials that made me lose all faith in modern advertising.

1) A commerciall for SPEEDSTARS, which are little moderized cars for kids made by Playskool. The commercial was probably the most ineffective one I've ever seen. They show two kids sitting in the middle of a fucking indoor parking lot playing with the cars. The camera is on like 4x speed so the kids look like fucking spazzes revving up the cars and letting them go on a 12 inch tall loop. What kind of parent, post seeing the commercial, would buy those cars for their kids. "Lets go buy some cars that suck so my kids can go play with them in the middle of a parking lot."

2) A Capn crunch Cereal Commercials I saw commercial. It starts off with two kids shopping with their mom. It shows her buying healthy foods and then the frsit kid says, "we need chocolate, no we need choco donuts@14`2516" Then they see that all of the boxes are gone.

OMG THANK GOD FOR THE GIANT SHIP THAT COMEAS RAMMIGN THROUGH THE SHELVES OUT OF NOWHERE!$" The kids turn into poorly drawn cartoon characters and then jump on the ship. They then sprout wheels and slide down a mountain while all hyper. "Time for a pit stop!" The kid stops and starts guzzling chocolate milk out of a huge ass fucking bowl. He then sticks out his tounge, wiggles it and keeps racing. The girl then jumps off a ramp and takes an enourmous bite out of a chocolate mountain. The kids are then transformed back into humans and they have chocolate all over themselves. They then grow cartoon tounges and lick it all off, scooby doo style.

Who the fuck would buy that cereal?
"Lets go buy a creeal that will make my kids go onto a cartoon ship , grow wheels and get spazzed up in the company of a guy with a large blue hat on."

-_- Im sorry for ranting, that just made me mad....Any opinions?

yes.. im getting tired of all this new merchandise aimed for the "X-Treme people" i mean.. whats up with all this.. "xtreme" merchandise.. and food comming out.. i think it was maddox that pointed this out to me.. but after i read his article.. i started noticing these things and they started making me mad..

i hate "xtreme" marketing...

chillywilly 03-19-2004 01:32 PM

yeah commercials think if they have boring kids having fun by using a product, it will sell. thy also use black people and rap/hip hop a lot in their commercials recently. mcdonalds anyone?

Synthlight 03-19-2004 01:34 PM

1) They are not advertising to the parents. They are advertising to the kids. My son loves just about every commercial regardless of what I think of it. "Daddy, SPEEDSTARS are COOL!". I haven't seen the commercial but that is basically what the parents would usually hear and put it on the gift list for birthday/christmas. These commercials are basically the same thing everyone has been watching their entire life. It's just that you are now grown up enough for them not to appeal to you. :)

2) Refer to point #1

Cheers,

Synthlight

Jolly Ranchers too has a similar one with kids break dancing to get jolly ranchers..weird..commercials are so corny and stupid sometimes I find them funnier than actual shows.

i beg to differ synth.. when i was a kid.. i remember awesomely sweet hot wheels commercials... not in some parking deck.. not with some crazy metamorphosis (sp?) to some crazy cartoon kids.. it was real kids.. in real environments.. the hot wheels track wasn't set up at the playboy mansion.. it was in the kids room.. using books to hold it up.. and the wall as a brace.. i remember wanting that because i, myself, could use some books to hold it up and the wall as a brace.. seeing those advertisements for toys in the jungle made me think.. where could i find a jungle at.. after i realised that i didnt live near a jungle, i gave up on the sweetness of the toy....

The only toy i had.. that i didn't lose interest in was the G.I. Joe action figures.. just because they whooped major ass and i, as a kid, wanted to take part in the ass whooping..

chillywilly 03-19-2004 01:41 PM

all i remember was power rangers jumping everywhere and you had to get their weapons and action figures so you could jump around too.

Commercials are designed to make kids/parents/the social norm think that if they own said product, their lives will be better.

Example: Dodge Ram Hemi Crew Cab. Just because you have it does not mean you will drag race some old man and win, then get piles of models. Just like beer commercials, where some @ss gets these beautiful women. The marketing: exploit normality so people feel bad about their lives and buy the crap because it will make their lives better/easier/more popular/cooler/whatever.

I hate the advertising media, laugh tracks, McDonalds (shut the hell up - I don't give a **** about your crap-ass food and how I'll buy some piece of **** car if I eat at McDonald's everyday. I mute those commercials - everytime.)

Bottom line: Make them feel bad about what they have, they'll go out and get more.

Big, faceless corporations are always going to find a way to advertise through some kind of message. Often, they use the following tactics:

The "Good Guy" approach-

The company tries to make the watcher feel like it's a true, honest to goodness hero. Sometimes used by bakeries and possibly car dealerships (anyone in San Antonio watch the Ancira commercials). They make it seem that these people can help you like they're some kind of "miracle worker"

The "Excited" approach-

The company makes it seem like it is the most awesome product on the planet. A good example would be the SPEEDSTARS or Cap'n Crunch commercials. Has anyone ever seen the Perfection commercial? An excited man from the 90's who probably got drunk and/or stoned before the filming with a crazy hairdo and a bad wardrobe advertises it and KIDS WANT IT. Personally, I got scared after te pieces popped outta his chest. I don't want Perfection...

The "Our Brand is Better Than Yours!' approach-

It can now be seen on MGD commercials that Budwiser is the "King of Beers," yet MGD is better tasting. This is often a ploy to get Bud users to try someting new. If a brand were so well established, it would not need to use this as a crutch and yet, they do.

In conclusion...advertising basically goes along these guidelines. Should you pay attention to McDonald's "New and Improved" Chicken Nuggets? Hell no. They taste the same. It's a ploy to get your money in their pocket.

On a side note I would like to add that the cut of the Super Size from McDonald's menu was a disguise to boost sales and say they promote good american health.

McDonalds's > Cut Super Size > Less lawsuits > Look like good guy v
Make addicts pay more by buying products separately

TACODUDE 03-20-2004 08:39 PM

Uh, that was actually me^. I wasn't logged on.

makaveli121212 03-20-2004 08:55 PM

a little off topic, but how but the new advertising....SPAM!!!

i hate it more than i hate vxd

You forgot the Humorous approach.

When done right, humorous commercials are probably the best. Take the Rachet & Clank: Going Commando commercials. Damn funny.

Someone was on some hardcore shit when they made that...

TACODUDE 03-20-2004 09:01 PM

As is the Men of Genius commercials from Budwiser. Also, who could forget the 7UP commercials? Those are the only non-evil ones. The funny ones. They rack their brains to bring you to your knees laughing. God bless their souls...

*EDIT*
1) The humorous approach is not evil.
2) EVERYONE was on drugs in that commercial.

Omeganitros 03-20-2004 10:51 PM

Best COmmercial EVAR: http://www.redbullusa.com/mime/10783...NationalMP.mpg

jazzmosis 03-20-2004 10:57 PM

Ugh: No the best commercial ever is the 7UP with Orlando Jones, when he puts the vending machine in the middle of the highway... now that's comedy!

By the by, Red Bull's slogan "It gives you wings" opens themselves up for a massive lawsuit - all we need is one idiot to drink Red Bull, jump off some building and survive, then sue them saying "It didn't give me wings".

Hell if we can sue McDonalds because some jackass can't hold his/her coffee, then why not?
