42 - The meaning of all life?

I've read up alot about this, and I was just curious to know if/what other people know/think about this..

Personally, I think it's amusing but I'm not sure whether or not it's believable or just an astonishing coincidence...

BluE_MeaniE 03-3-2004 11:50 PM

What coincidence?
Do you mean there's more to this whole theory, and it's not just a joke by a genius of British wit?

Wow, maybe I know nothing at all. In which case, please, go on....

altairian 03-4-2004 12:01 AM

wait people actually took that seriously and ran with it?....
on a side note, maybe someone who understands 42 would actually understand my username :p

Enlighten us Alt.

SpookG 03-4-2004 12:16 AM

read hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy

ZEROED 03-4-2004 12:20 AM

didnt the author just make up the number randomly

jazzmosis 03-4-2004 01:30 AM

No, there's actually a lot of references to 42 in universal constants, and base 13, 101010, along with 110110.. it's hard to explain since I don't fully understand everything about it, but it is a novel concept.

SotN 03-4-2004 02:07 AM

42 = 6*9

Which is not true, but if rearranged...

42 = 1+5*8+1

That suggests that Life, the Universe, and Everything are not logical at all, at least to conventional thinking.

So yes, 42 is a great answer.

haha, I was hoping someone would get it... it's kind of an obscure reference to HHG, but it's there nonetheless ;)

The Meaning of Life is in the Book of Mormon. "Men are that they might have joy."

makaveli121212 03-5-2004 03:49 PM

the meaning of life is to have sex and produce healthy offspring...plain and simple

jazzmosis 03-7-2004 03:43 PM

makaveli121212, that's the WORST meaning of life.

So, let's produce and produce until we run out of resources and ultimately kill ourselves? Good plan, terrible meaning of life. That's just human stupidity thinking we need to over-produce (which we do) in order to survive.
On the other hand, it is an obscure (although simple) meaning.

makaveli121212 03-7-2004 04:02 PM

that wasnt implied at all and if you thought it was youre reading to much into it...thats the meaning of life for every animal...pass down your genes so your species can survive...when you think abotu it almost everything humans do indirectly leads to this...you go to school to be smart to get to a good colllege to get a good job to get rich and then get a hot bitch so your offspring will be the best fit for also having sex and having kids...and so it continues...sort of a stretch, but logical nonetheless

ZEROED 03-7-2004 04:34 PM

the meaning of life is a strive for power and happiness while avioding death for as long as possible.

jewpinthethird 03-7-2004 09:24 PM

The meaning of life is to question what the meaning of life is.

I think that Douglas Adams is the third most creative man ever followed by Grant Naylor at first and second.

But anyways, I don't think there is a specific "meaning of life." We're just here because we are, and you should enjoy the time you have, and so on, but there isn't one specific reason that implies everything.

which is why {generalization} most men want to have sex with all women, and women choose the most attractive (healthiest/strongest) male

popularizing(sp?) and better genes
