Simple Alternative for Key Remapping

This is a program to remap the cursor keys for FFR. It pre-dates the addition of in-game remapping. but improves on it by supporting all possible keys as well as dance-pads, guitar controllers etc. It also adds very convenient boo-out and try-again keys. It is designed to have the minimum of timing delay:
No longer available

Make sure the in-game remapper is set to the cursor keys

Screenshot:
No longer available

The program defaults to remapping FFR R1, and can remap the cursors for other windows or programs too. Unfortunately, R2 and Resonance use low level keyboard access and it doesn't work with them.

Minimum Specification

Works in Windows XP and Windows Vista (may need to use "Run as Administrator" in Vista).
I'm afraid I'm not a Mac or Linux programmer, sorry guys...

NOTE:
To get the absolute minimum of timing delay, the program injects a message hook directly into the target window. This is flagged up as a potential attack by many firewalls and spyware programs - because accessing another window's messages could indicate unauthorised activity. In fact, the program is harmless and simply needs access to the keyboard messages to do its job. However, to be open, I've put the entire project and source code on the above site, so it can be checked and compiled by those who know how.

Re: Simple Alternative for Key Remapping

I maybe would have added a key to be able to boo out quickly and such, but other than that very nice work. It even lags the game less than AHK does.

Re: Simple Alternative for Key Remapping

Good idea. Just a moment......
......clank....
.....clunk...

...beep...
There - uploaded a new version (1.01) - now has a 'Boo Out' key.

when i go to open it, it says there's an application error.

tepsu 09-1-2007 10:39 AM

Re: Simple Alternative for Key Remapping

Good job all I can say, definetly easier to setup then AHK, lags less also and the boo out is a nice addon, but as gnr said, make it for mac ;)

MRichards 09-1-2007 10:50 AM

Re: Simple Alternative for Key Remapping

Gnr61, tepsu: I don't have a Mac, and I don't know about programming them either, sorry...

blindreper1179: Do you get this error when you run the installer (FFR-Keymap 1.01 Setup.exe), or the program (FFR-Keymap)?

blindreper1179 09-1-2007 10:57 AM

Re: Simple Alternative for Key Remapping

i click it, it says install. i install it. i leave the box checked at the end to run it, and then it says application error.

MRichards 09-1-2007 11:07 AM

Re: Simple Alternative for Key Remapping

blindreper1179: I've been able to reproduce the error on one of my machines. I will come back with a fix shortly...

MRichards 09-1-2007 11:41 AM

Re: Simple Alternative for Key Remapping

I've fixed the "Application Error" bug reported by blindreper1179. Too busy to update the version number - so redownload version 1.01

Nice work! AHK was laggy like hell on my computer, and this works wonder. Congrats on making such a simple, but complete program.

6/5 for this!

101 Boos.

Lookie what I did.

Re: Simple Alternative for Key Remapping

I don't know if it would be doable, but a "Try this song again" keymap would be great. Or you could only stay your mouse over the button and click on some key to try again.

freakysnots 09-1-2007 12:02 PM

Re: Simple Alternative for Key Remapping

Not a good idea because then the score will not register.

redownloaded and it works ausomely.
thanks for this. i've been waiting for the ingame mapping, but oh well now.

Thankfully, there's no price to pay for uninstalling this, unlike AHK (which took out something vital when I uninstalled it). It also works really well.

On second thought, this is absolutely amazing.
xD
I highly suggest this to anyone reading the thread.

This should take the place of jwc's AHK sticky.

That is kind of ridiculous. That would make it kind of easy to cheat at getting the token where you have to get 1100 boos in silence.

Fantasticone 09-1-2007 12:33 PM

Re: Simple Alternative for Key Remapping

Not really, you have to pass and at that rate you'll zing out of the level instantly.

Wootsicle 09-1-2007 12:42 PM

Re: Simple Alternative for Key Remapping

It's already easy to get the ST for Silence, and anyone with AHK could do worse, so shhh.

Re: Simple Alternative for Key Remapping

Also, is it just me, or does this program reduce avmisses too? I usually average around 40 of them on bb revenge, but I only ended up with like 20.

Edit: I also just got like 8 of them instead of the usual 20 on Vertex Beta

Re: Simple Alternative for Key Remapping

freaky, blindreper, anyone else.... do not forget that we log unusual game results... freaky's 4000+ boos was logged as unusualy and blindreper had 2 logged as such as well.

now, if someone else happens to look at that page (which I have no idea if they will)... they may wipe your levelrank. i understand what happened... they might.

so, be wary when you do stupid things like that.

Would 500 be unusual? If not, then I should be ok. I can't mash 1 key anyways lol

oh dang, thanks for the heads up.

no more of that.

Tasselfoot 09-1-2007 02:55 PM

Re: Simple Alternative for Key Remapping

500 is fine. 5000 is not.

MRichards 09-1-2007 03:36 PM

Re: Simple Alternative for Key Remapping

I've uploaded a new version (1.02) that prevents excessive boos from the 'Boo Out' key. It still works, but won't generate more than 100 or so boos (usually 24). I suggest everyone download it to avoid problems.

During development, I made a programming mistake and got 13000 boos on one song... I've been working hard on my level rank, hope it doesn't get stamped on...

Wootsicle: The program is in C++

I noticed that too. However, that is what makes the avmisses less. Once you get used to it, your scores will increase and songs with jacks will become a little easier.

Jeez... I just noticed that.

Re: Simple Alternative for Key Remapping

Gave it a try. Seems to keep up nicely considering I had no problem nailing the 8th jumpstream, still missed on jacks but it seemed to respond much quicker. I'm not sure though.

Edit; yeah it works very well.

It doesn't lag, it just has a high enough response delay that it will hit the arrow a frame or so after you hit the key.

Re: Simple Alternative for Key Remapping

Thanks everyone for the interest and positive comments. Some good ideas - I will make an updated version which minimises to the notification area and maybe add a suspend button too. Keep an eye on this thread...

tepsu: I'm sure there is a way to do something similar on a Mac, but this source code is very Windows-specific so I doubt it would help a Mac programmer very much. Feel free to post it elsewhere though.

tepsu 09-2-2007 02:41 PM

Re: Simple Alternative for Key Remapping

Ok thanks, maby someone will actually go through the trouble of re-creating something like this, I don't know, or maby I will come a Mac OS coder in the next couple of months lol... Anyway gonna post it and see if it catches anyone's interest.

Re: Simple Alternative for Key Remapping

A new version available (1.05). Added minimise to tray and a global on/off key:
http://www.latent.demon.co.uk/ffr_keymap.html

The global on/off key is only needed if you frequently switch between FFR and typing in the same browser. You don't need it to use a different window (e.g. MSN). Leave it disabled if you don't use it.

Enjoy...

I've made another update (1.06) that fixes a bug with extended keys such as right shift/alt.

Re: Simple Alternative for Key Remapping

Hey guys, look up a program called "Total Game Control" the retail version is 19.95 I believe, the deal is this: bind any key/mouse/joystick to anything. Might be really good for people with dual-analog or Xbox controllers as you can bind a analog and some buttons for your mouse ;)

Working great for me, I just cannot play DDR/FFR/SM with a keyboard :D

heyitsmee 09-8-2007 10:44 AM

Re: Simple Alternative for Key Remapping

i recommend you to add an extra button\key stroke option to "try again"
i did it in my AHK script with the movemouse to the try again button position and press
works for me on full screen
so less annoying then taking your hands off the keyboard every time when you try to AAA with autofail

get a ,ap top and you wil be able to do evrything on the keyboard

Re: Simple Alternative for Key Remapping

Can it be made so that we can load it onto and run it off a flash drive?

I've been playing with this for a while and when I use AHK off my flash drive it makes me suck.

MRichards 09-8-2007 03:03 PM

Re: Simple Alternative for Key Remapping

I've upped a new version (1.07) with a 'Try Again' key.

http://www.latent.demon.co.uk/ffr_keymap.html

The mouse cursor needs to be somewhere over the FFR window for it to work - no time to work out why right now. Just move the mouse near the "Multiplayer", "News" & "Help" buttons below the playing area and it works fine. You can define the 'Boo Out' and 'Try Again' buttons to the same key for convenience.

I've also put up a zip file containing just the required files - no installer. You could use this to put the program on a Flash drive or memory stick.

EDIT: Just realised that the 'Try Again' mouse limitation is a pain when using my other smoothing tool. I'll up a fix tomorrow...
