GDP of Countries vs US States

In case folks wonder how the US compares to the GDP of other countries, here is a a map of the United States with each state renamed as a country that has a similar GDP

Thoughts?

The Texas/Canada and Hawaii/Nigeria comparisons are pretty amusing.

To think the US has as much GDP as all 50 of those countries combined, where a single state can equal a pretty big economy, like Indonesia. It makes the US look really rich.

Guess who has the largest GDP in the United States?

That's right, California. Sup? You bitches be riding on my tail-coat.

Also, only about 10 states or so have GDP that are equivalent to "developed nations."

Also, don't let the president see this map, he might invade Alabama.

Several of the GDP numbers used to make that map are incorrect. A quick example is the GDP for New York state.

In 2006, NY's GDP was 3rd highest of all the states in the US, equal to $1,021,944 (millions US), behind Texas and California. However, the map places New York as having the 7th largest GDP of US states, behind Florida, Ohio, New Jersey and Illinois.

Further, the map equates the GDP of New York with that of Brazil, and claims that Brazil's GDP is $621 billion, which is also incorrect. The CIA world factbook lists Brazil's GDP as $943.6 billion US ($1.616 trillion PPP).

I would guess that Hong Kong also has a pretty damn big domestic economy, much greater than that of Maryland (though maybe DC skews that value a bit).

I thought D.C. wasn't apart of Maryland or any state.

Re: GDP of Countries vs US States

It's technically not, but it might have been included as Maryland for the sake of that image, due to the fact that they don't have a separate section for D.C. That might explain what I feel to be a great discrepancy between the GDP of Maryland proper and Hong Kong.

ROFLMAO!

Wow, putting our countries economic power in that kind of perspective really shows you how far we have climbed over the past 200 or so years.

What's the source for that? It seems very, very wrong. Georgia=Switzerland? I don't see how that is possible. Anyways, even if that map is somehow correct, income per person in the US is much lower than in a fair number of other countries, including Switzerland and Hong Kong, which is why the claim that any individual state GDP rivals either economy immediately strikes me as suspicious.

Even if the source is incorrect, California is still the tenth largest economy in the world. The rest of the union can suck it. Bam.

A good way to tell if you live in a state that actually matters is to type "economy of [the name of your state]." If you get a search result that matches your request, Congratulations! Your state doesn't suck.

Sorry New Jersey kids, your state stopped mattering in the 19th century.

Seriously though, I think that map is a couple of decades off.

No, Canada fails for still sucking the tit of the Queen.

You say that like the Governer General actually has much beyond figurative power.

Who wants to mail the map to President Bush?

@ Jewpin: That would be...eh...f-ed up if he did invade Alabama.

The royal family is a leech. Their wealth and property should be stripped from them and given to the people. Seriously, if the Queen doesn't actually do anything, then why should she, or anyone in the royal family, be entitled to the riches that she has?

At least France had the balls to kill off their monarchy.

And Russia, although individuals still live today with royal ancestry from both countries. If the Royal Family continues to receive money from "the people" they should just be cut off, confiscating the money they have now would be a bad way to go.

Membership in the commonwealth under the crown of Britain is largely figurative in Canada. If the English want to continue to support their own monarchy, that is up to them. About the only time you see British Royal anything in Canada is if you are associated with the military, or private organizations (Such as the Royal Canadian Legion) that predate independance.

Oh Em Gee, Wow that was great, hahaha mad props. That map shows a lot of similarities =X Wish I had came up with a map like that back when I was in High School, my Geography teacher would've been pissed, yet possibly humored..
