Gender Selection
The latest Medical Breakthrough- gender selection. Families can now choose whether they want a girl or a boy, through gene manipulation and artificial insemination. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think it's right/wrong, ethical/immoral, religous/blasphemous, etc.?
I dunno. I suppose that if you wanted to have a girl, you could do it... but it would be something that the parents have to agree on. It is there own decision wether it is right or wrong, and that sort of thing. Personally, the only problem I find is exactly that. Want a boy? Have a boy. But make sure it's okay with everyone else.
Well...to complicate things futher, you always have the issue of that if this takes off, what happens when one gender has a distinct abundance over the other? And does this mean we're going to start experiementing futher, with eye color, height, intelligence, athletic ability, etc?
well everyone is going to want the best for their child, is there anything wrong wih that? as for gender choosing, thats just wrong. you might make a female embryo a dude, and it'll end up being gay
guest=me. the #%* is suppost be homosexual
athletic ability?...are you sure that is found on a gene
well yeah. ted william's son is better at baseball than bill buckner's son.
what?! changing an embryo form male to female isnt nearly as hard as moving thousands of genes around...and cutting out and splicing many genes, and then linking them back up without error...
i never said it was easier, i just said it is carried on in genes.
i never accused of saying it was easier...
ok then
science is getting messed up now days. i have mixed feeling about this. first of all the morality issue. I belive that a child is made to populate the earth and also from "love" wich makes it personal and choosing what it is is to be down at random in the human body not a test tube or petry dish. but you can also look at the point that in todays society no one cares of morals right\wrong and you can look into the science of the matter. being able to choose a boy or girl may be a helpful decision so you can plan well in advance butit means the child is created not for repopulation or love but form greed or the one thing that is destroying the human race from day one be it monkey man or eve.

The Y Chromosome is very easy to find. Finding the individual traits can not really be done yet. They have not mapped the chromsomes yet, so they don't know where everything is. And they can't really have test subjects very well, so it will be almost impossible to alter genes on a person.
w hy dont you just suprise yourself, sometimes it happenes onm :D
gender selection is a very sensitive subject
just like many other things, but do you think its moraly right to change the laws of nature? i would be happy just having a child, i dont care if its a male or a female. thats my opinion |
gender selection, that just sounds messed up.I mean that you dont have to control everything in someones life.To me it seems that by changing a childs gender you are changing its entire course of life.Theres enough we have to do as people in this world and I dont think deciding someones gender is one of them.
Whoa, major misconception here. They aren't manipulating genes for gender selection. Manipulating genes in humans is still illegal. All it is is it's a study that showed that if a couple conceives the child at a particular time in the womans menstral (sp?) cycle, it can be statistically assosiated with that child being a boy or a girl. It's a natural method of gender selection, like breeding horses, they aren't doing anything to the genes. XD I hope no one honestly beleived that.
It's still manipulating the genes. By artificially inseminating and making literal 'test tube' babies, they can predict whether it will be a boy or a girl with an almost 100% certainty. No, they're not actually changing the genes, but still. Oh, and I think I confused some people back there when I said the thing about changing height, intelligence, etc. For those of you wondering, no, they cannot do that...yet. The 'yet' is what I was trying to convey, I was asking if people thought in the future when they undoubtably learn how, what they thought about it, and if this is the first step toward that.
I think that is at max only 75% perfect so far, but in the coming years it will become probably 100% perfect. They dont change the genes at all they just take the sperm and seperate them using dyes to tell the y and x chromosomes apart. One takes in more dye then the other. I forget how they did it in the end but i think it involved electricity in some way.
