What will the world do when..

Alright, so this whole forum is basically dedicated to ponder things (Critical Thinking, duh) but what will the world do when we know everything - or at least, everything that is possible to be understood? What will happen when there are no more questions?

And if it's not possible, then why do we bother to try and know everything if it is, indeed, truly impossible? Sure, it could be human nature.. But.. I don't know. It seems like a waste of time, somewhat, although some people do enjoy pondering things that will never be understood.

So in the future.. What will it be like then? Will we be able to do anything? What will happen to human advancement?

Discuss.

Every thing we do is a waste of time.

I don't think it is possible to know everything. Maybe as a human race through the span of billions of years, but still then a single person would not know everything.

I think society is the source that drives the want for knowledge. Knowledge leads to money (most of the time). That, or society shapes people into wanting to learn everything and anything.

A human certainly wouldn't be able to know everything, but a machine might. I suppose that depends on certain aspects on the universe we don't understand right now, though I would like to believe there is a limited amount of things to understand.

We strive to know more because we want to.

I'm pretty sure no matter what happens there will always be questions that need answered. As for which ones I have no idea.

Well honestly I don't think everything in the world could be answered in any amount of time....(why doesmy hairy sister lemmy have that bald spot?) I think its just in the human nature to have a hunger for knowledge and enrich our understandings. in the end it is a waste of time. it wont really matter to us either, we will all be dead. and human advancement will end....only because there will be an elephant in the way.

i'm beating the system, you just don't realize it ;)

If we were to know everything, then we will eventually know which religion (if any) are right, and which are wrong. So we'd all be one religion, or we'd all be atheistic. If we're all one religion, it would be scary IMO, and if we were all atheistic, well...I don't know how people would react. They will certainly be more wary of their time on Earth since they'll know that there's no afterlife and such. Sorry to make this thread about religion, but that's the first thing I thought of.

It's alright, that's one kind of thing that I think should have been brought up. I think in one way it would produce mass enlightenment to know what is real or not. But possibly people wouldn't be able to handle it, and there would be mass chaos. But maybe people will adjust?

I know everything! It's spelled as E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G, pronounced as "Eh-veh-ree-thing" and defined as "all things or a group of things" in the dictionary.

<getting to the point.>

I honestly don't think you could know everything. That would mean that you have traveled to each end of the universe (not possible, as it is ever expanding), seen every star, explored every planet, watched/read/looked at/listened to every single piece of entertainment, lived ever since the Big Bang, know what will happen in the future (And time travel is simply not possible due to paradox.), met and got to know every single person that existed and will exist, etc etc.

It would also mean you knew what happened to your soul after death, which no one knows.

Also, if you knew everything, would you know that knowing everything is not possible?

~*~

Life was a freak accident. Evolution was a freak accident. Therefore we humans are also a freak accident. (Even the universe was a freak accident)

Does it matter if we live to have sex and kids before we die? No. Does it matter if a meteor just crashed into our planet right now and killed all if us? No. Because there will be a time when each human has desintegrated into different atom formations. We are simply a single atom of a stepping stone in the life of the universe, which has no point either.

It doesn't matter if I decided to go out and kill everyone in my town. Even if it were to become a weight on my conscience, even that will soon die with me, and several millenia from now, no one will remember the massacre. (No, this is not a clue to a future crime life. I do not base my choices on the maximity of the universe.)

Do you know why it doesn't matter? Because no matter what we do after several trillion years, this whole universe will come to a CRUNCH! And there will be nothing left to remember the course of our actions. And our sun would have exploded by then anyway, which would take out our dear, beloved Earth, which would take out use if we haven't all died yet. Then a new universe will Bang and there is still nothing in that new universe that will even know we existed. Life may never develop on a tiny, lonely, watery planet circling a yellow star. The universe may not even be quark-based.

So really: who cares?

i dont think we will ever know everything becuase if we did then you wouldnt need to ask this question.........

Delta this is a what if question. Of course she doesn't know everything.

I suppose there will always be questions until there is no one left to ask.

This is not known. There are three competing theories about the nature of the Universe (the shape of the Universe and it's size largely coincide with each other, but that's another argument),

1) It's a fixed size 2) It will expand until it gets to a certain size and contract (oscillating universe) 3) It will get to a certain size and dissolve.

It's been observed that celestial bodies are moving away from each other, thus disproving the first theory (unless of course, you prescribe to a religion that states otherwise) but other than that, we don't have a clue what will happen. You also have to consider the tentative nature of science. Never assume anything is true. Just know it hasn't been refuted.

Now back to the thread, will man kind ever know the true nature of the Universe? I can't say. In terms of Cosmology, it's in its infancy. Everyday, we (as humans) are discovering more and more about the Universe. And we will continue to do so.

Honestly though, what good is asking questions we can't possibly answer? Whether or not it is possible to know everything there is to know about the Universe should not matter so long as we are still discovering new information.

Actually, our little friends over there at nasa, last year, given the results from WMAP on the composition of the universe have concluded the universe is going to expand forever, no questions asked.

However, entropy will get the best of the universe in about 50 billion years. So hopefully by that time we'll be able to hop on over to our friends in another universe ;D

I have a simple answer...

If we every do learn all there is to learn, we'll all get bored with real life and play virtual reality video games.

At least that's what I'd do.

I think we'll find a way to screw up the universe well before we run out of free energy, though.

Back on topic: Damn, we'd know a whole lot of things if we knew everything. No more dying of diseases since we'd know all the cures, but the world would overpopulate. It seems that you just can't win, no matter how much you know.

RandomPscho 03-3-2007 09:38 PM

Re: What will the world do when..

You would also know how to stop the overpopulation, or make it so there is enough room that overpopulation is an impossibility.

Also, we as a human race could never screw up the universe. It is too vast.

well over time humans will be able to learn things faster and more efficiently imo, and has been aparent over the many many years already. but one will never be able to kno everything cuz there will always be more to learn.

Assume you know everything there is to know about the universe. Also, assume that you know that bunnies are fluffy. That means that you know how the information is stored as well as the fact that bunnies are fluffy. Thus, what you know must be more than what you know. =><=

Since that grand ol vast universe is free for the taking (or at least we think ;) ), overpopulation shouldn't be a problem is we get our butts of this planet eventually.

And we could screw up the universe. I mean, tell someone back in 1500 AD that you could smash atoms apart to release energy enough to blow up the enemies army, their base and more all in one blow 8) They'll be like, '..atoms?! where do I get them?!'

I wouldn't be surprised if you could blow up entire galaxies. I mean, supernova explosions destroy everything for lightyears of distance.
