I'm not racist, you are!

This story starts last summer. I was working at a theme park, where I was selling ice cream in one of those stands. The company had few employees, most of which were very fun to work with. To some, I didn't talk because I didn't feel like it, or because it was too awkward. Anyways, there was this one black girl I had to work with for a few hours (it was the first and last time I worked with her, not because I didn't like her, but because my boss decided to make the schedules accordingly). I didn't talk to her at all, except for anything job-related.

Now, about a week ago my friend told me he actually knew her. She told him she though I was racist because I didn't talk to her and it looked like I was ignoring her. This is what I have a problem with: People who accuse others of being racist because they were left out, mistreated or ingored. Most of the time, at least in most of the cases I've witnessed, it's the white people being accused.

It seems it's just really easy to accuse others of such a big offense. It has a lot of impact too, and it comes with immediate hate when proven. I'm getting really sick and tired of this, because there is almost no way out.

P.S. sorry if I'm not making much sense

No, my friend has nothing to do with this other than tell me what the girl was thinking.

Uh...just start talking to the girl on a casual occasion. Let her know you're not rascist, you just don't want to talk to people right then.

Re: I'm not racist, you are!

Race is a major problem here. I mean, my friends usually joke around about it (particularly my friends at my A-day lunch table), but some people just look retarded.

I've often called oreo 'cause:

-I play soccer
-I'm actually good in school
-I behave
-I hang around with anyone, regardless of race

What makes me shake my head and laugh at the same time is the fact that many support MLK (I remember when we had little "polls" at our tables in World Geography, and I had to read this one girl's opinion on who her hero was. It was about as close to 1337 as it could get.), yet they still stay segregated.

There will be that one day where someone tries to say that I'm against my own race, and I try to ask them why they support MLK.

$10 says that I'll get many blank stares.

My bad, completely misread. That changes things considerably.

Well, there's nothing wrong with her speculating that you don't speak to her because you're racist; it's a distinct possibility, though farfetched.

However, her coming to the conclusion that you're racist simply because you don't speak to her is nothing more than a wild conjecture that is accepted because it makes her feel more secure in her social position by making herself into a victim. "Why isn't everyone talking to me? They must all be racist, because there's no way that somebody might not have a reason to talk to me otherwise."

Tell her that she's an idiot for me.

I'm not going to see her again anyways, so no.

Exactly. It's so much easier being the victim. Some people tend to exagerate it to the extreme though.

Re: I'm not racist, you are!

I remember way back my mom got fired from a telephone services job, because some guy thought she was being racist. She just raised her voice a little with this guy she was helping. Nothing even worth complaining about, but the guy blew up saying she hated Blacks, and that he was going to call the boss, and complain, and whatever else it was.

That was a long time ago. Recently this happened...
My dad drives cab, okay. And you get a lot off idiots, drunks, crazy people, people who pee their pants, etc. He was driving this guy somewhere, and the guy never said which way he wanted my dad to drive, so my dad went his own way. Then at some point they guy said something about the fare. My dad replyed, "How much does it normally cost?" The guy said, "4 dollars." My dad chuckled thinking he was joking, and then took a wild guess at the price, and said 15 dollars. The guy went absolutely mad, I can't remeber all he said, or all my dad said, but I'll let you imagine. So, my dad decided "(Oh, I know! I'll drive him back to where I picked him up, and then we can start over, and go his way, and whatever the price comes to he'll pay that)"

Then my dad proceeded to make a U-turn... and the guy blew up again, and start yelling things like "You're driving like a maniac," and various things like that. Then he said started saying things about my dad being racist, and then he "Let me out of the car right now!" The he said he was going to call the taxi office, and he got out of the car, and ran. My dad tried to get back to the cab office before the guy called, but he didn't make it.

I don't think anything really happened with this, because after all taxi driving is full of all kinds of stupid things. Most of the time it's just idiots (98%).

So, these are perfect examples of people thinking people are racist for very idiotic reasons. They're obviously LOOKING for reasons. IDIOTS!

I think this country pampers itself a bit too much. Either that, or our history is presented the wrong way.

Re: I'm not racist, you are!

Let's put it simple, people who are insecure about themselves believe that others think wrongful of them, obviously, because they just don't get talked to, it's a natural fact, if you don't feel normal with yourself, you should LESS LIKELY feel normal with anyone around you, maybe you were a little cold in not talking to her, but the fact she thought you were racist over that is plain stupid.

Now... if you would of been racist, you would of drowned her in the sink before anything happened xD.(Cheap joke, I know you're not racist nor nothing the like).

I assume you mean in cases where it's obviously just farfetched to jump to the "racist" conclusion.

Because people, in general, are still racist in our western society, particularly in the US.

I would have to agree. Not to be a racist or anything (irony!) but it is mostly blacks who feel that "they have been subject to many wrongdoings and thus they deserve special treatment." I got in an agrument with my English teacher. We were reading Beloved by Toni Morrison and she was telling us how badly the African American people have suffered. The thing that irked me really bad was the fact that she was making it sound like ONLY black people have suffered and that it was everyone elses' fault. I brought to her attention that MANY groups, if not ALL groups of people have been oppressed at one point or another. Chinese Exclusion Act. Internment of the Japanese during WWII. HOLOCAUST. There are so many things that have happened to the human race and the different cultures over the years that it's ridiculous to categorize them in order of how extreme they were. My teacher would retort with some illogical remark saying "CAMERON HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT. AFRICAN AMERICAN'S WERE ENSLAVED FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS!?" I had the urge to say.. "Without those enslaved peoples, our country's history would not be the same. What happened happened and you can't take pity and give blacks the benefit of the doubt or feel sorry for them because that does nothing in this day and age. Sure, learn about history but don't live in it." That probably would have gotten me kicked out of her class, but I honestly don't see what is wrong with people categorizing things and elevating situations that are really unnecessary.

My point really is that... People are sensitive about their race. It is part of the American society because we are such a broad mix of cultures. However, some people think that it is alright to fall back on their culture/background if they are too unintelligent to deal with the problem, or they are lazy. The girl could have EASILY talked to you while working, but she chose not to. Why? "OH IT WOULD HAVE BEEN AWKWARD." You can't expect so much out of people and not do it yourself. Hypocrisy.

It seems to me that racism is just a joke nowadays and it isn't important unless it involves a hate crime or something, in which case people crack down on it saying it ruins the reputation of America as the "home of the free." I'm actually too tired to expand on this right now. Basically, she was an idiot trying to get attention and make life harder for others out of spite or laziness.
O_o

Re: I'm not racist, you are!

I was at a theme park once, over by the lily pads in the water park. You know, those things that float on water and you walk on them by holding on to a suspended rope above? Anyway, this black guy was going up and down the line pushing people off the lily pads into the water, even though there are about 5 signs that say "don't go backwards, no roughhousing, etc.." The lifeguard whistled him and asked him to stop.

He flipped her off and called her a ****. This is not an exaggeration, I was standing within 10 feet of each of them.

Needless to say, she called security and had him ejected from the park. I caught up to my mother who was near the entrance to the water park at the time, and she said she saw a man being hauled out. She said he was screaming "IT'S CUZ I IS BLACK, AIN'T IT?"

Honestly, if people of different races want to be treated equally, the people who abuse the stereotypes need to just knock it the hell off.

I remember this one time I was at the mall and I was about to leave one of the stores through this narrow isle, all of a sudden an african-american family comes infront of me and steps out of the way to the left because there was a huge mess of toys n' stuff on the floor I do the same just out of natural instict, I step top the right and just walk over the junk. After I passed them I heard one of them say something like "You see that, he would rather go over the mess than walk in the clean space closer to us." and another went made this sounds with their lips that really ticked me off! I was trying to move out of THEIR way so that THEY could walk in the center of the isle where there weren't anythings in the way. Just something I remember similar to Verruckter's story in a way.
