What do you think of this?

There are some rumous that some people in the states
don't know virtually anything about the rest of the world.

Then I saw this clip..

http://www.shoutfile.com/v/gSfSsCpR/...ans_Are_Stupid

It's true that the bright minded individuals were probably cut out from this clip
but still It's unbelieveable!

Kyrgyzstan?!?!? Who in earth would believe that?! Well, never mind.

Re: What do you think of this?

Sorry, but I never heard of the "Coalition of the Willing" or whatever. Maybe it's because I don't live in the US...XD

But come on, what religion are BUDHIST monks...and he said islam..I laughed XD.

And one didn't even know what the United Kingdom is.

But still, this doesn't show Americans are stupid, although these ones are. And it's fun to watch :D

PS: Invade Italy!!! XD.

Clips like that are usually horribly biased and edited to give the impression that every joe on the street is a ****ing idiot.

Although a guy from Canada did get the former governor of Arkansas to congratulate Canada on preserving its national igloo.

Whiteboy showed me this the othe day.

How many sides does a triangle have XD

I could probably go around the streets here and find plenty of people that don't know who stephen harper is, so I would say the world in general is pretty ignorant to their surroundings. The average IQ in the states is about average though (98).

HEY JERRY SPRINGER

HAVE YOU HEARD THAT CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER TIM HORTON FINALLY PASSED THE DOUBLE DOUBLE BILL

"oh well congratulations tim horton on passing the double double"

Re: What do you think of this?

First off, I just had to google Stephen Harper so I feel a little stupid now.
Secondly, IQ and general knowledge are very different, and while a high IQ is good, knowledge of the world around you is just as important.
Having lived there for a couple of years, I would say that Americans know relatively less about the rest of the world that Brits, but in their defence, from the UK it is a half hour flight to France which is a completely different culture and every European country is so totally different and so close together. Whereas America is an enormous place so you can easily fill a news program with news from there alone and it makes it much harder to find a completely different culture.

Ask the college students.

Apparently we're retarded and drink beer all day, so you should get some better results for your biased views, right?

I GUARANTEE the average college student would mention that the map they are putting pins on is labeled incorrectly.

But University students represent more like, the top 15% of the population, smarts and education wise. Not really a valid representation of what a nation knows.

I've seen some college professors get sucked into saying some retarded things though on these shows that pretty much try to make americans look retarded. Like, stanford professors at that.

Re: What do you think of this?

But then why is it that college students are seen as idiots who drink and stay in school for 10 years.

There's no balance to this.

I'm sure I could make every person from Australia look like a complete moron if I cut out all the people who answer correctly from my video.

Not only is this clip utter stupidity, It is probably the most prejudicial video I have ever seen.

OMG THOSE PPL WERE SO ****ING DUMB...

I know its only a small percentage of them but its people like them who got Gerogebush in office...People who support him because "he comes from Texas so he must be right". Those people should be wiped of the face of the earth. But it was funny seeing people thinking Iran, Sri Lanka and North Korea was where Austraila was

There were only about 2 questions I didn't know. Who is in the "Coalition of the willing". I haven't a clue...

Name a country that starts with a U...First thing I thought was Uzbekistan..don't quote my spelling on that...

Makes ya proud to be an American. Doesn't it?

Cavernio 01-8-2007 07:21 PM

Re: What do you think of this?

As was said, you could find the same thing with any country. And as also already said, the US is friggin' huge, and honestly, why do you need to know about other countries when your culture is dominating the rest of the world?

If you went to rural China I'd bet you'd find a whole lotta people more ignorant than these guys. Of course, living in a poor area where you don't have the opportunity to educate yourself is different.

The video's prejudiced I guess, but it's also funny, and you must admit, that these people walked into it themselves. No one stood there and said the people interviewed were ignorant groundlessly; they showed that completely themselves.

Coalition of the willing are countries that support the war in iraq.

Uzbekistan, Uruguay, Uganda, Ukraine, United states, UAE...I think that's all of them.

These people don't even know anything about their own country. They don't have two clues. I mean, the number of sides on a triangle? The currency in England is queen elizabeths!?

"Let's invade france...they're not our allies..."

It's sad. Obviously not everyone is like this, but it baffles me that people like this exist.

Edit: Let's watch and see how many of you answer all 3 of these basic skills questions incorrectly ;)

1. Do you know how much two plus two is?
A 3
B 4
C 5
D Yes
E None of the above

2. Your response to this question is
A the 2nd option
B the 1st option
C both
D none of the above

3.To which is 31 the correct answer?
A 7 + 11 x 3 - 9 = ?
B 11 - 7 x 7 + 3 = ?
C 3 x 9 + 7 - 9 = ?

Woah man.

A couple of the questions were a bit trivial, not exactly common knowledge, or at least something I wouldn't expect every single person to know off the bat. Most of it was really silly, though.

What I hate the most is how these guys compiled the people who answered dumbly to the questions into a video as if these people represent the majority of the population.

Reach: DDA.

I bet I failed, right?

Then again, the video in question had common things. I mean, how stupid do you have to be to not know Australia is the big island on the southeast of the map?

No, you got them all right. I've asked a couple people those before though and they all got them all wrong.

And you have to be pretty damn dumb.

Re: What do you think of this?

Although any idiot knows that most Americans aren't that stupid, there has been a lot of very similar clips like this one made recently.
I think the point that is trying to be made is that it is surprising how little many Americans know about the world they are so proud of their country trying to control. You can of course name many countries where perople are equally ignorant of the world around them, however i'm pretty sure it would be difficult to find another 1st world country (with the exception of Scallies in UK, which is Anerica's lapdog anyway).

However the point about America being huge and therefore having plenty to talk about within itself is totally valid. It probably is the main reason the Americans shown on all the clips don't know about the rest of the world.

Also adressing Squeek's point. College students around the world (possibly with the exception of some Asian countries) are seen as lazy alcoholics who are a menice to society. This steriotype is purely brought about by the fact that for many College is the first time away from parents for a prolonged period of time which causes some to go wild and act out. The effect these few individuals have in society is to reinforce the steriotype.
Which brings us in a full circle to the original problem. Americans in general are seen as ignorant of the world around them due to the small percentage of them seen on the type of clip being discussed in this thread, which reinforces the steriotype to the rest of the world.

Re: What do you think of this?

Score! I got them all right too. =]

I think in the video, some of the people were lying about their answers and thought it'd be funny to answer them incorrectly.

This video is terribly biased, but true in some respect. We Americans, as a whole probably do not know much about other places in the world let alone their capitals and presidents. The rest of the world however, know who we are, our capital, and who's running the whole outfit.

Re: What do you think of this?

My take on everything is as follows. They may or may not have answered the way they did because of impulse, humor, or because someone made them but the fact remains that it wasnt meant to be taken seriously. The same thing can be done to any other country producing similar results its just there is a stereotype against americans describing us as lazy (and a lot of the time, fat) which only makes things worse. Ill condense everything into this little saying, PEOPLE ARE DUMB, dont take things to literally and dont believe stereotypes, just sit back and laugh at everyone and their dumb actions.
