Christmas PS2 RPGs
Anyone have any recommendations for RPGs to ask for? I heard Disgaea and Dragon Quest VIII are both pretty fun RPGs.
Also, some side notes: I don't want to get anything multiplayer. I really want something that'll play itself, where like, for example, the allies/party members/whatever can kill monsters for you so you don't have to press anything on the controller for a few seconds (doing HW at the same time while I play them). Grandia II has something similar to this, where you can set it to auto-battle. PS1 games are fine. |

Tales of the Abyss.

I tought FF8 was pretty awesome, but you probably don't want something that old. FFX was also really good IMO.

Re: Christmas PS2 RPGs
You probably should have listed what you've played...
Ah well; here are my two suggestions. Perfect multitask RPG: Final Fantasy XII. -I say this because you'll be doing a lot of leveling up. (Which is why I'm hating it.) +However, you can customize how all the characters will fight automatically. The .hack series +Has a fantastic storyline. Your allies fight automatically, but you have to control the main one. Shouldn't be too hard to multi task with though for the first 4 games, as it uses a simple 'press the x button quickly, and many times' style combat. -Is very monotonous. |
Re: Christmas PS2 RPGs
I like less story and more repetitive dungeon crawling or grinding of levels.
RPGs I've played for PS: FF7, FF8, FF9, Legend of the Dragoon, Dark Cloud, Dark Cloud 2, Shining Force Neo, and Grandia II(Which was on the Dreamcast) |

You'll absolutely love DQ8 then. The game is absolutely massive, with tons of dungeons and way too much grinding XD Probably the biggest overworld a console game has ever seen (bigger than oblivion?). It is incredibly long (50+ hours for the main quest). I would also suggest DQ7. I would recommend FF10 and FF12, because they are good games. FF10 though is more story than grinding I would say, at least until later on. There are some optional areas of the game that have incredibly hard bosses and won't be beaten unless you've been doing some hardcore leveling. That should keep you busy for awhile. If you like those kind of games that much though, and happen to have a DS you could pick up a copy of the redone Final fantasy 3. If you don't mind horrible graphics you can just emulate it, a long with final fantasy 1 and 2, and the dragon warrior games. All of them have a lot of dungeons and require quite a bit of leveling, as they are difficult games. Oh yea, Valkyrie profile 1 for the ps, and valkyrie profile 2 for the ps2. snes classics: chrono trigger, ff4, ff6. |

How often do you have to pick up the controller in the DQ games? |
Re: Christmas PS2 RPGs
I third FFXII. It's a decently long game, you spend alot of time leveling though. For some reason you'll be cruising along through a dungeon with no resistance, and then the area right after that dungeon has enemies ten levels higher than you and you get raped. H-Core. It's a good game though, it seems to fit all the perspectives you're looking for. All you really have to do if you program your Gambits right is run around and go near enemies. You can literally make the game play itself, kinda neat.

Tales of the Abyss.
Final Fantasy games suck. Why are you all recommending them. If you won't get Tales of the Abyss, then get the PS2 version of Tales of Symphonia. Between those two games, you're looking at 200 hours of gameplay. |

Re: Christmas PS2 RPGs
No, but my friends who say Square Enix is milking the franchise for all its worth by releasing sub-standard games that look solid but in reality suck sound reliable.
Then again, I've only played three Final Fantasy games and they all sucked. FF7, FF8, and FFX. Didn't even bother to finish because they were so badly done. I honestly cannot believe people enjoy these games. Get RPGs from Namco and Atlus. They almost always rock. And they don't need to make 12 games in a row with the same title along with spinoffs to be "successful". |
Re: Christmas PS2 RPGs
Uh, not to stray, but isn't playing video games while doing homework counterproductive? Splitting your focus on two tasks tend to botch both no matter how good a multitasker you are.

Re: Christmas PS2 RPGs
Yea I forgot to mention Chrono Trigger, it was only released for the SNES and the PS1 in the bundle 'Final Fantasy Chronicles'. Chrono Cross is awesome too but it's the second one.

Chrono Trigger is awesome. Pick up the original Grandia if you can. Best game in the series.

Re: Christmas PS2 RPGs
I just got word that my Mom got a pretty huge bonus from her work, so time to revise my list from three games to ten games. So, post your 5-10 favorites and I'll narrow things down from there. Thanks for the help.
