About my mom.
Ok, this most likely belongs in Chit Chat, but for the sake of having extremely serious answers, it's being posted here.
My mom got our Halloween pictures today, and she does into the obligitory rant that she has every time we get pictures. She talks about plastic sugery; how she's going to get it. Now, being Christians, my mom and I believe that plastic surgery is tampering with the body that God gave you. My question is if she should get plastic surgery. |
Re: About my mom.
You're just lucky that God gave you/your mom a body and i don't think you should tamper with it...Yes im looking at you Eminem

Re: About my mom.
So your mother and you believe in God and say that it's a sin to tamper with one own body yet you mother wants to do it. I am not sure what god you believe in and if there is such an edict about altering your physical appearance but if there is, you are sinning I guess. So if you truly believe, that it's wrong, then don't do it. blah blah blah. As for what I believe in, I don't know enough about the subject to judge either way.

Re: About my mom.
I really dont think random strangers are justified to give you information on your opinions and your family's situation. But for the sake of this thread, do what she would like.

Re: About my mom.
The Bible also tells women to never cut their hair and men to never shave their beards.
God wants your mother to be happy. If she is significantly affected by her own appearance and your family can afford it, she should do something about it. |
Re: About my mom.
Plastic surgery for the sake of having plastic surgery I feel is wrong. But, plastic surgery which will help oneself more than "I need bigger boobs" is more than valid.
I had a rather large underbite from birth. I had braces, expanders, the works, up until January of this year, when I underwent surgery to pull my upper jaw forward. Now, because of the surgery, I'm not at risk for many tooth and jaw related problems that awaited me had I not had the surgery. As I said, surgery for the sake of having surgery is wrong; anything else is the reason surgery exists. |

That's the first time I've heard someone say Christianity forbids plastic surgery. First homosexuality, then abortion, now this?

1st) N00b, if your mom is just wanting plastic surgery for the sake of it. then I wouldn't suggest it.

Re: About my mom.
Ignoring the religious issue at hand, I would say no to the plastic surgery. Plastic surgery, in my mind, has the sole purpose of altering your appearance. Other medical benefits besides altering your appearance, such as preventing future tooth/jaw problems are different. I'm not sure exactly how they are, but they are.
I cringe at the thought of ever getting any surgery done though, so maybe you shouldn't take this from me. All I can think about when someone talks about getting plastic surgery for appearances sake is that TV show The Swan, and Extreme Makeover, and how the women on those shows went through incredible amounts of pain to fit into a version of beauty which society says they should have. Yes, a lot of those people on those shows dramatically increased their self-esteem, and I don't want to say that it was a fake way to increase self-worth, but it really seems to me like it is. Outward physical appearance shouldn't matter to someone so much that you need to go through a long, painful process (surgery IS still surgery) in order to perfect an image of yourself. Besides which, people can have some pretty ugly-looking scars left over, and the surgery mightn't go really well either. I've heard of people who got their noses done, and hated it more than what it was before. I actually thought the girls on The Swan, after makeovers, were fugly anyways. They looked kinda like mannicans or something. They walked funny, and their chests were too big for their narrow hips which looked like they barely supported them. Their faces looked no better than they did before; they just had a ton of make-up on. But what if your mother's hideously disfugured or something in car accident? Well, I suppose that depends on how bad it is. If her appearances are so bad such that people don't treat her like a human being (and I'm guessing that people AREN'T running away screaming), then I just don't understand WHY someone would want to do that to themselves. Lastly, if you think its fine for someone to get a nose job, then why isn't it fine for someone to get bigger boobs? I think FoJar raised a very worthwhile point actually, in that what society terms as beauty is something which is sexually attractive. It seems to me that people want physical beauty mainly because they want people to be sexually attracted to them and for the same/(opposite) sex to be jealous, for people to oggle them. They want people to treat them better. As much as you might think you want to have people attracted to you, that very same thing can also be a detriment if others only focus on that. We all know it, but to say it again, physical beauty is only skin deep. On the other hand, I don't agree with the religious belief thing. If you believe in God, God also gave us minds and hands and the ability to changes ourselves, mentally and physically. Your mom could rigourously excersise or something instead, and that would be her changing her own body as well. Is that a sin? (yeah yeah, this contradicts what I said earlier. Again, maybe just the thought of someone voluntarily cutting up people is too bothersome for me.) For me, the pain would not be worth it, and actually, the idea of me changing myself to purposefully fit into societal standards of beauty is kinda backwards anyways. Beauty comes from differences. Hehe, I could see myself getting plastic surgery to make myself look like a freak though. Give myself devil horns or something :-p. 'Cept that surgery's kinda permanent. |

Re: About my mom.
Plastic surgery is great in essence, its just nowadays everyone uses it for the wrong reasons to me more 'accepted' by society. If say you were to have some kind of deformity then sure it would be good to get it fixed for the sake of not being treated horribly or at least to boost self esteem to where it should be. HOWEVER, i think that most people nowadays only think that they are treated badly or are so depressed that they need it. This is mainly the result of everyone acting like you have to be perfect looking. If there is seriously no good reason to get plastic surgery other than doing it just because, then you shouldnt. One thing that struck me interesting was a concept someone told me about when they said that if you werent the best looking person but you still had a lot of self confidence and acted like it didnt matter, then most of the time people would see straight through your looks and they would like you for your personality alone.
As far as religion goes, i think what was intended was that we dont deform our bodies by getting piercings and tatoos all over, the only way i can see it being bad as far as plastic surgery goes is if it is used for the wrong reasons. Also, whoever thought it was a valid thing to bring braces into the arguement needs to think a little bit more before posting. Changing your body to fit societies standards is not the same as getting braces to correct sometimes serious dental problems which can affect your health. |
