Obligatory Guy Fawkes Day Message

As some of you may know, today is November the 5th. This means it's Guy Fawkes Day in the UK. What exactly is Guy Fawkes Day?

Guy Fawkes was a man who, in 1605, tried to destroy Parliament as it opened with a cart full of gunpowder below the building itself. It was this act of terrorism that was to spark a revolution and end the corrupt government of England as he knew it. Unfortunately, on November 5th, when he was down in the cellar ready to light the match, he was caught and then hanged.

Today, many Brits celebrate his demise by burning or hanging Fawkes in effigy. I, on the other hand, celebrate him. He was a terrorist, yes, but he did so to throw off the chains of the oppressive government. Today is a day to remember, just because the government is how it is, it doesn't mean we can't change it or even get rid of it. There is always another option.

And so I leave you with the children's rhyme: Remember, Remember, the Fifth of November, the gunpowder, the treason, the plot. I can think of no reason the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.

I would celebrate his ideals rather than him. There's nothing inherently wrong with wanting to make changes, radical or otherwise, to a government you believe to be in dire need of them, but there are better ways to accomplish your goal than through acts of terrorism.

You can dump tea into a river, for one.

Which lead to a revolutionary war. It's exceedingly impossible to change any governmental structure without hurting someone.

At least with a war you have people that know what they're getting into. As cold as this may sound, there's a large difference between killing armed soldiers and killing innocent civilians.

I entirely agree. However, I believe, that if used properly and only directed against the government or oppressive force terrorism can be a tool used for good.

I didn't know about it until I saw V for Vendetta. I don't have much opinion on the subject as I don't know much. Doing the wrong things for all the right reasons. Sometimes people feel there is no other option. See that in day-to-day life, arguments we make, obstacles to overcome.

One person or a group of people can change aspects or views of a government. We know that first hand in the US.
