iPatcH's Introductory To Electronic Music

I've decided to start work on a project that I've really wanted to do for a long time, the idea being a way to help spread the knowledge of electronic music, and maybe help stop people calling all of it "techno." Yes, it may be a little elitist to be all anal about using genres, but a lot of you artists out there know what I mean, because there is a big difference between trance and say, breakcore.

Anyways, another reason I wanna do this is because I don't like Ishkur's Guide To Music... not does he only pull out random names for genres with maybe 3 songs that can fit under it, but a large portion of them are mainly jokes poking fun at said genre.

This "lesson" is going to be a series of mp3s, in a CD-like format along with several tracks giving genre examples.

I hope people are interested to see what I do with it. =x

I'd love to see it.

Well this has me intrigued. The problem that I could see you possibly running into is not being able to encapsulate everything, as that that could be nigh impossible.

Sounds like a good idea.

Are you just going to do genres like Trance, House, and DnB, or are you going to go further into subgenres like progressive trance, deep house, and all that crap?

Re: iPatcH's Introductory To Electronic Music

Each CD could be split into subsections with each genre.

Trance:
Two tracks with anthem trance.
Two tracks with progressive trance.
Two tracks with hard trance.
etc.

Hardcore:
Two tracks with happy hardcore.
Two tracks with gabber.
Two tracks with freeform.
etc.

House:
Two tracks with filter house.
Two tracks with hard house.
etc.

(I might be slightly off in categorizing these, forgive me.).. but you get what I mean.

But the problem is that you wouldn't even be touching electronic art music, or the Chip Tune scene, or the DJing scene, or the sampling scene. I find this task to be very difficult.

Is introductory a noun?

Re: iPatcH's Introductory To Electronic Music

Introduction is the proper word.

Although you may want to pick a different one. Form the sounds of it, "Guide" might be a better choice.

Well, I wasn't listing all the subgenres of electronica..

But basically, I'm saying each release should be a mix of different subgenres within each subgenre.

I think undertones are the #1 thing I don't hear enough of these days. It's like they forget to put them in or something, and it's really bad-sounding.

FFR4EVA_00 11-8-2006 07:20 PM

Re: iPatcH's Introductory To Electronic Music

I don't notice the undertones until I wear headphones while listening to it on the computer.
Then it sounds empty without them.

Rai: My thoughts exactly.

Is this going to be in installments, or are you going to take forever to finish it? Also, you can't possibly be into all the genres you're trying to research, maybe you should turn this thread into a suggestions drop box.
