The end of the world

I was watching some program on the news the other night about the end of the world, and I was wondering, what do you think will cause the end of the world. Why do you believe that that one thing will destroy us before anything else? What way would you prefer the end of the world to be?

I don't know if this is what i would prefer but ithink eventually the water will rise so that the only part left of the uunited states is the rocky mountains and it will be so overpopulated there that everyone will kill everyone and thats how we will go, None of the other countries count cause once were gone their all gone...

Read all of Revelations in the Bible right before you go to bed. That's how the world is going to end.

But is that how you would prefer the world to end? I don't even know that much about the bible, I haven't been to church in quite a while.

Even if I didn't except the facts, I could do little to change them, so why try? It's inevitable.

Because I was asking a theoretical question, so you don't need to go into much detail. Explaining what and why the earth will end is the major critical thinking part of this thread. Picking a way that you would prefer to die from natural disasters(maybe naural, there are those other giant threats to humanity.) is the fun part.

Re: The end of the world

You have a few scientific facts about the end of the world.

According to the second law of thermodynamics, eventually the universe will reach a point where everything is the same temperature. Unfortunately, nothing can live at that temperature.

The sun has about 6 billion years left of Hydrogen to burn off. That should be sooner than the universe's big cooldown thing that only happens when every star in the universe burns out.

We could all nuke each other for no reason and cause the entire Earth to just become uninhabitable.

Who knows?

Re: The end of the world

Well, there are a few scenarios.

We're kind of at a threshold point. A point where we are capable of destroying ourselves...and still not yet capable of preventing natural apocalyspes such as a hit from a giant asteroid.

I figure we're probably our biggest threat over the next few hundred years, as our development during these years is absolutely the most crutial point in history.

But then again I figure if things continue the way they are going, technologically, centuries from now, or millennia, natural causes likely will not pose a threat to us.

After that I suppose the biggest problem would simply be the fact that eventually all of the matter within the universe is going to be destroyed. But yea, that's some 50 billion years from now.

Or maybe the collision of the milky way and andromeda. Going to another star might not be that difficult but I can imagine even with 'warp' technology moving an entire civilization to another galaxy could pose a problem, but that's not going to happen for some 3 billion years either, so it doesn't seem to be a real threat.

Some genocidal nut is probably going to get his hands on nuclear weapons and end the human race with them. That's my prediction.

As for the world itself...I predict the Earth smashing into something eventually.

Nuclear weapons in the hands of the "wrong" people.

Re: The end of the world

Interesting thoughts. I've personally thought that we would destroy ourselves, as many of you do, though I do not believe that nuclear weapons will be what ends us. I've always thought some brilliant dude would go insane or something and develop a technology no one knows about, that way no one will know how to stop it.

Re: The end of the world

When the sun goes red giant the Earth will either be consumed or the sun or will simply be turned into a planet as inhospitable as Mercury, I imagine that will be the end of the world.

My view on nuking the world

Even if every human dies, it is not really the end of the world if bacteria still exist, in fact, they could probably re-evolve into intelligent beings before the sun died out if we quickly nuked the world. But I'm not even sure of the effects of radiation on different types of bacteria, or whether radiation travels to the bottom of the ocean. If you have an ocean teeming with life, then how could it be the end of the world? Especially if whales and dolphins still existed which are quite certainly intelligent beings, it could not be considered the end of the world.
