and last time I checked you didn't need religion to be a moral person. |

Does it really take the reward of eternal heaven and the threat of eternal hell to motivate you to live up to a decent set of standards? It really isn't that hard to realize that being moral is about doing things that help humanity. You can help humanity by giving to your community. You can help humanity by not going to your school with a gun and shooting everybody. Morality is whatever helps instead of hurts. The idea that the only thing that can motivate people to be moral is a reward or a punishment is cynical. Virtue really is, and should be, its own reward. |
Re: That topic.
Eh, I guess your right.

Life happens. People get wrapped up in their lives and things become more important than doing good for the whole. We orget to be nice. We are owned by what we own/ feel entitled too. We need something to jerk us out of this space a.k.a. Religion. Yes, I mean actually participating in your religion, going to church every Sunday does nothing if you don't invest some sort of energy in it. This will probably be my only post in CT. Pardon the Interruption and Goodbye. |

I tend to have two issues with it, though: 1) Religion causes an awful lot of conflict when people take it too seriously. 2) I always found the concept of using religion to get people to behave better a little manipulative. |
Re: That topic.
There's still that unclosed issue about Onan...
You guys are about half right. I don't know if the reason of Onan's sin was identified, but his sin was at Deuteronomy 25:5-9. It was called Levirate marriage I think and he failed to perform that act after the death of his brother. So I don't know if "pulling out," as it's been said, was the sin itself, just the fact that he didn't obey this command from God's Law. |
Re: That topic.
Also since I like to post different ideas in different posts. There's been talk of Bible text that says masturbation is wrong. Really it isn't mentioned directly at all in the Bible as a sin. (Meaning it doesn't say, "Thou masturbate and sin.")
But there is a principle that some have touched which is Matthew 5:27,28 (part of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount) Which basically says if you idolize women then that's committing adultery in your heart. Other principles that you can look at are Colossians 3:5 which tells you to deaden your sexual appetite. (Meaning things outside of marriage sex for the most part without getting into every detail) And the reason you want it deadened is found in Romans 1:26,27 where it talks about these sexual appetites leading to homosexual relations. (Which IS condemned in the Bible at 1 Corinthians 6:9,10) So you take the Bible as you want but that's what you're looking at as far as any bibical proof that masturbation is bad. (Notice: bad =/= sin, just that it makes you more prone to doing something that is a serious sin) |

But if you see it that way I guess that's fine but that's not what I read from it. |
