Sudoku, anyone?

By now, you're probably aware that a new kind of puzzle has taken hold in the minds of American citizens...the Sudoku or "single number" puzzle. It's basically a logic problem...you're given a 9x9 grid divided into nine 3x3 grids and some numbers scattered throughout the grid. Your job is to fill in the rest of the grid so that each row, each column and each 3x3 box contains the numbers 1 through 9.

I've started to dabble in this sort of thing, and while I sheepishly admit that the Medium level on the 3D Sudoku site (go to www.2flashgames.com and click on "Puzzle Games") tends to leave me stymied, there's a similar program on Miniclip, only the ones there are MUCH easier. I once knocked off one of their "hard" puzzles in under 20 minutes, doing all the figuring in my head.

But getting to the real point of this topic: do you do these kinds of problems, and if so, how good do you think you are?

I've tried one in a newspaper, and stopped due to boredom. I can't say I'm very good at these type of puzzles. You've got to be born with it.

I really enjoy the puzzle mode in the Onimusha games, if that counts for anything. Those are easy, though.

The creators of Sudoku, FAP, and other awesome games.

Also: I bet Tass kicks all your butts at solving them.

Not sure about that, but I've attempted 3 in the Metro newspaper, and solved all 3... each in well under 10 minutes.

Yeah, 14:55 was my first solve. I never put one in the wrong place though.

The game looks so incredibly boring and repetitive that I have zero interest in trying them.

Alright, I didn't see a restart, so I just backed up in flash, Screwwed up the timer for my Medium game, and got:
NaN:NaN:Na
Score 1,000,000
Now to play hard.

-Edit-
Just beat it on hard. 31:54. I will post my SS once photobucket comes back up from maintenance.

-Edit-
Done on Very Hard. Actually only took me 22:22. I was getting better at calculating the different numbers.

-Edit-
I redid Easy and got 10:17.

When I was in Japan, my friends showed this game to me. It's pretty fun and a good time killer.

I can do them easily <_<

I never really had a problem with them

I guess I'm just good

I also did them in games magazine waay before they became all popular, so they weren't new to me

I'm gonna go try it on the site and see my time

EDIT:
I did the very hard one in 17:59 first try (on igotrhytm's site
either I got a whole lot slower... this one is harder... or I had a terrible track of time when I did them before.
Time score: 146730

ew, sudoku is disgusting.. its the easiest thing in the world.. it sickens me that in society this can be considered something challenging, and not something that is at a basis of trial and error.

The only thing that is any consolatino for doing these is a reward of being able to do a hard one all in your head, aka not writing down all possible numbers in each square and erasing as yo ugo along... keeping every possible line in your head is good practice for stuff like chess and crap like that.. otherwise, what a waste of time

If you're playing it as a trial and error game, you're not doing it right. In most puzzles, all the numbers can be known just from logic, although there are some exceptionally hard sudokus that involve guessing once or twice.

My only problem with sudokus is that they can only reach a certain level of complexity, and once you know all the tricks you basically have the key for any puzzle you'll ever do. However, it still takes some time to find all those numbers, even if you take a very methodic approach to the puzzle, and that makes the puzzles much more enjoyable (what I mean by this is that, no matter how many sudokus you've done before, a new one will still be a different challenge). If you haven't played it yet, give it a try, it might seem repetitive or boring at first but once you start developing ways to find the harder numbers you'll see how it can be a nice game.

I never ever guess when I solve sudoku puzzles

I get everything by logic - I have never had to erase anything on a sudoku ever
and I've gotten some of the "cruel difficulty" ones from games magazine.

I don't know what the hardest ones are - but I've been able to get all the ones I've tried

Yes we should all try to solve sudoku because it contains the hidden answer to
oh nevermind sudoku is pointless.

I meant that its no different from say minesweeper... look at a pattern, know what that pattern represents, and solve it in your sleep
