School should start at a later time?

Should high schools start later in the morning?
The old saying goes that the early bird gets the worm. But, according to medical studies, getting up early might not be best when it comes to high school students and their ability to learn. Right?

This is probably not news to many of you, but according to studies teens fall asleep and wake up later and are able to learn better later in the day. Some studies have also shown that later starts for high schoolers led to less absenteeism and tardiness and less depression and peer relationship problems.

My school starts at 8:00 AM, and i still think they should change it to 8:30 like the Middle, and Elementary schools.

I think schools can make a later start that can also be good for the students who have some activities after school.

What do you think? Do you think that you should start school later in the morning? If you think they should, how much later? Or do you think a late start would hurt your afternoon schedule too much when it comes to taking care of a younger sibling, working a job, playing sports or participating in other activities?

Yes I believe high schoolers should get more time to sleep, because they need it the most. I personally think it's just stupid for them to wake up that early at such a stage in their life, when sleep is very important.

YES, THANK YOU!

I've been wanting this to happen for the longest time.

It's obvious students don't pay attention in class and fall asleep often because they have to get up early in the morning.

Don't you get tired of forcing yourself to get up, then feeling as if what you're doing is wrong. It's like your body is saying, "Ha, ok, that was a good one, now quit joking around and let's go back to sleep."

Something needs to change.

i wonder why don't all schools just start at 9:00??? why do you need to get to school that early anyways? and im pretty sure that a lot of people wont mind getting home at 4 or 4:30. and that way, if you need to study for a test ( :? )or something you can still have time to review in the morning.... :D

Yes! I always force myself to do that every morning.. Setting alarms, my mom getting the dog...

But I had to make my body get used to forcing, or else I would over sleep. I'm discussing this with the principal and i hope he would do something about this.

I do this a few times every morning.

unlucky for me, school starts @ 7:30. I would greatly appreciate a later start like around 8/8:30.

I personally disagree because going earlier gives you more time to do homework after.

I agree with tny on this one. And I need all the procrastination time I can get. <----not sarcastic

I think that school starts as early as it does to prepare the young and developing generation for the future, when jobs and such call for the need to rise up early. Sure certain jobs allow for self-maintenance, but the majority of careers call for the hour drive to a 9-5 work day.

msbrunnettemickey 05-16-2005 03:35 PM

BUT! Would you want to be alert in class? Get better notes to study? Feel refreshed and now fall asleep in class?

Of course you are right about the younger generations, but they can get used to those stuff as they get older.

I would feel quite greatful if when I got up was 8:30, to me that would be heaven. See I have to get up at 6:00 to go to school at 7:00. In my opinion getting up the earliest should be for the elementary school kids, because early in the morning is when most parents work and they could easily just drop their kid off and go to work.

However, I also think the fact that high schoolers get up so early is a preparation for future living. Jobs and such are pretty much the same as school. There is no way to get around having to get up earlier because they are preparing you for that same feeling ever morning when you get up to go to work.

wow, i need to get more sleep then......forget i said that.

i used to have to get up at 6:00 for school in middle school (worst years ever)
but now i only have to get up at 7:10. but im still dead tired. i wont get up until my mom threatens me and yells that im late for the bus, even though i have about 15 more minutes. (i dont do anything in the morning except get dressed pretty much, showers are for night for me.) so i have all the time to just get dressed, and i do that literally 5 minutes for every piece of clothing. i literally get out of bed to satisfy my mom, then drop to the floor no matter how hard it is, and go into half-sleep mode. and i never have time for breakfast either.

Eh, much later is pushing it, but 9:00-5:00 would be nice. I honestly wouldn't mind it that much. Getting up at 5:30 or so is a bit of a hassle.

MonkeyFoo 05-16-2005 06:48 PM

My school shifted the schedule forward 15 minutes this year. It's teh pwn. 8:00 seems like an hour later.

msbrunnettemickey 05-17-2005 04:59 PM

Research in the 1990s found that later sleep and wake patterns among adolescents are biologically determined; the natural tendency for teenagers is to stay up late at night and wake up later in the morning. This research indicates that school bells that ring as early as 7:00 a.m. in many parts of the country stand in stark contrast with adolescents' sleep patterns and needs.

Evidence suggests that teenagers are indeed seriously sleep deprived. A recent poll conducted by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) found that 60% of children under the age of 18 complained of being tired during the day, according to their parents, and 15% said they fell asleep at school during the year

(I was assigned to research this topic in school, thats why i know all the information)

Tank101 05-17-2005 05:19 PM

15% just anytime during the year?

I know people who think something is wrong with them if they don't fall asleep in Science Class.

Tps222 05-18-2005 09:29 AM

I have never fallen asleep in class. I have track practice, baseball, and am very active, I go to sleep at 1 and get up at 6. I am fine. I think it's biological, though, I wouldn't mind a bit more sleep :) .

I would actually rather start school earlier. Our school starts at 9 and gets out at 4. I would much rather start at 7 and get out at 2.

OR... Get your lazy Ass up in the morning, and go to bed at night.
