Thoughts.

Thoughts, What really are they?

What allows humans the power of "Thought"?

What allows "Feelings" of emotion?

There is nothing special about humans. We have logic, and logic alone.
If you kick a wall, you go "Oww". Your nerves say, "Hey, that hurt, stop it asshole".

But that explains the logical part. Our minds are simply electrical inpulses... So what causes heartbreak? Or passion?

Electrical pulses that make us... "Love" each other.

Which leads me into the conclusion, Why do we need it? Where does it fit into life? Emotion does not help.

Observe your situation. Logic, every 10 things your logic arrouses 90 you didn't notice later. Chose the wisest course of action. Act, Boldly and switfly, do not back down.

Observation fits into human life. Logic is nessisary. Wisdom is what is left when we have run out of oppenions. Without action, there is no reaction.

There is no room for "Feel".

RE: Thoughts.

Logic is our prize; emotion is our love. Our minds are not actually just electrical impulses, for they can do much more than that implies. Our bodies- nerves, senses, muscles -they run on electrical impulses, but our brain leaps much farther above that level. Just like computers we take those 1s and 0s and turn it into something much greater through programs that elaborate on the ones before them, but unlike computers we also have a predictive engine that allows us to increase our abilities far beyond those of computers.

Emotions are a key part of our minds; emotions give us motivations and stimulations that make us grow and learn and improve our abilities. Emotions help control the processes which forge that predictive engine and make it a potent force. Would you still have your logic if you never had the desire to learn anything in the first place?

"Feel" is what forges that tool we call "Logic" and makes us the potent forces we are.

I must disagree. Most animals do not have the ability to be self-aware. Maybe only some rare monkeys in Africa. Humans, as a result of being the top of the top, have this ability which has made us evolve from cavemen into modern society. Humans also have innate abilities and ideals. We have morals, senses of beauty, of literature, of art, and more. if we only run by logic, why do we fall in love? Why do we listen to music? I see no logic in getting married, it will only make you lose half your money. Yet feelings such as love are inherit traits that are valuable and lead us to do things like get married. If we ran only by logic, we would still be cavemen. Emotions and feelings have led to inspiration, and this inspiration has led to philosophy, and philosophy leads to science, and science leads to our world today. I cherish my feelings as much as I cherish my logic. You are thinking in an Enlightened view, I am thinking in a Romantic view. If you read Rousseau's earlier works, or works of German romantics you'll see what I mean.

RE: Re: Thoughts.

thought is the matter of all non-materialistic action. Thought itself can be somewhat confusingly versatile in all situations...
example: to think or have thought? Am I really thinking on this topic or am I being guided by my conscience to say what I believe is automatically right due to logic?

making a play on the word "animal", it could be seen that we are also still animals, just an evolved, intelligent form of one. Not only that, we could also still be evolving at the present-day time, into something perhaps more superior (maybe that's why all the youth are smarter nowadays...). But anyway, if you look at us as animals, smarter, more powerful, and infinitely more deadly (we're destroying a planet, aren't we?). Emotions and intelligence supply us with both intelligence and somtimes incredible lack of foresight. Take a psychology course, you'll find answers there.

Moogy 02-5-2005 02:23 PM

As we all know, humans are only the third-most intelligent species on the planet.

The second and first-most are dolphins and white rats, respectively.

White rats are actually representations of four-dimensional beings, which is why they are so smart.

GuidoHunter 02-5-2005 02:47 PM

Explain, Moogy. What determines intelligence such that humans are inferior to dolphins and rats?

Why, the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, of course.

I feel that this has nothing to do with the actual thread topic.
The human brain has the frontal lobe, which developed over years and years and years. Homosapiens used to be just like otters or jaguars. I think that the day when the first human versus human fight was the day emotion was born. They both realized that they had both hurt each other. They had just experienced pain. This allowed us to learn so much more, and we needed more room for it all. Since then, the frontal lobe of our brain has been getting bigger and bigger.
If you will excuse me, the broadcast from the so-called world famous Lizard Lounge just dropped a huge variation of Out of Space by Prodigy.

If you ask me, feelings are no more than logic. Your brain simply comprehends them in a way that we see as "feelings". Love, to me, is nothing more than psychological. You only love someone because this is what you have told yourself. A human's brain is constantly making logical choices, and these "choices" or attributes in a man/woman are what make us "love" another.

This said, I also believe humans are too intelligent for their own good. These feelings and emotions that we have, although great at times, can create great distress in one's life. Other animals show very few signs of distress, love, or these other emotions that we feel everyday. We let out emotions take control of us and guide us through each day. Whether this is good or bad, I cannot say. That would be a highly opinionated area.

falconsfan14 03-8-2005 03:58 PM

First of all we need emotions, if we didnt have them what would drive us to do better in life. what would make us want to geta better job, life, marrige, FOOD, shelter, exc... And love keeps us emotionally stable, if not for love would we care about anything, would we be really happy, would there be any more humans, love=sex=more life. logic, if we didnt have logic we would all probablt be dead by now, logic=common sence, we might have killed our self like by walkin off a cliff, bombing one of our states to see how powerful the bombs are exc...

FEEL, if we could feel nothing the same we do over and over and that are harmful to our bodies and we would probably end up killing our selfs. emotions and sences are essential to our every day lives.

SonikTheHedgehog 03-8-2005 04:06 PM

You state some good points, falcon, but I still disagree slightly. Many other animals in nature are able to live without love. It is truely not essential for life. It may seem like it is to most of us, but we are only slightly different from the other animals around the world. You say we need love to be happy, but happiness is mostly psychological. Although an event may make us sad at a certain point in time, looking at the brighter side of that event makes us less sad than we were before. The event is still exactly the same, yet our feelings have changed. Feelings and love are unessential for life, whether we would rather live with it or not.

falconsfan14 03-8-2005 04:10 PM

you also make some good points as i see it from a different angle, on the animal part i dont know, they might share love we might not know it because the meow and bark, that sounds stupid but it is possible.

Gathering and consuming food is instinct. We do not need emotion to know we need food. This isn't about whether se need senses or not, because obviously we do. The question is do we need emotion.

We don't need emotion to reproduce. Reproduction is another instinct. We know we have to reproduce to keep our species active.

And I see you bring in logic. of course we need logic. Hell, most animals know if something is dangerous or not. It's instinct. If you've ever vacuumed near a cat, you see that it gets away quick.

I also see you bring in shelter. Our logic and our intellegence guides us to build shelters. All emotions do are make us yearn for that large house we don't need.

I don't know why we have emotions. It's probably a side effect of our evolution.

alainbryden 03-8-2005 05:06 PM

I already know that psychologists have no Idea what the mechanism behind human thought actually is, so you may all continue defining 1/0

hatakikakashi 04-9-2005 04:45 AM

Emotions may not be necessary(for survival), but we have them for a reason. Animals can have feelings too, at least some mammals anyway. You can tell the difference between a happy and sad dog right. So if other animals besides humans can and do have emotions then emotion must be useful somehow right?

Meteor858 04-9-2005 10:24 PM

yes
they must (no crap)

HamHack 04-10-2005 10:49 AM

humans are simply animals, but have logic. their instincts make them want to be around other humans and so when they can't be around other humans, or when they are around humans they liek , passions and emotions come into play. their frontal lobe helps them learn and sometimes interfere's with this.

So, in any case, nobody THOROUGHLY understands what makes a person concious, but thoughts and impulses are bioelectrical responses to stimuli, and emotions are chemical balance.

Nobody really knows what ties it all together for certain, though.

And Micman, what's your native language?

CaRmZ 06-26-2005 10:53 AM

thoughts.......wow thats a big subject.....wellz think about it thoughts can be anything what we are typing right now and this moment are thoughts....no one can quite understand the human mind and be capable of explaining it because everyone has a different thinking mechanism and I know that two people may have things in common but there will be their differences.....thoughts to me are things or images that the mind interprets and then puts into words that you yourself can understand....or thoughts can be how people think out loudly to themselves though. It's basically how you feel about a situation even daydreaming is a form of thought......
