every placement is an auto-placement based on your Skill Rating, so far. We're going through everybody's ranks with a fine-toothed comb at a later time for more accurate division placements.

Placements aren't final and continually get combed through, please keep that in mind.

Until the tournament has actually started (or until psychoangel691 says otherwise), assume that all placements are tentative and subject to change.

This goes for everyone else who plans on bringing up players who might not be in the correct spots. Have patience, and wait until things get closer to the start date.

EDIT: The censor on your name is absolutely hilarious, ahahahaha. Thanks vBulletin. :p

Mind if you just take me out? Simply put, I'm not fit for d3, and I don't want a badge that I don't qualify for. I struggle to AAA Excite Bike these days. I can't AAA things over 10, and I can't FC things over 35. I will not have fun trying to push myself to only barely scrape by for the first round and just get dropped in the second. I can't recover 4 years of not playing the game at all back to my former prime.

If you have a decent computer, try breaking the standalone tradition and use a direct link on Google Chrome. The game runs like absolute shit for me using the standalone flash player, but I get minimal to no lag using the direct .swf link for R^3 for my browser.

I'm just curious, why sign up for an official tournament if you didn't want to try to push yourself and play your best? If you were once capable of D3 scores, you still are. I still haven't actually looked through everyone's ranks yet, so for all I know you could be lower, but just going off you're being there currently.

Err, I know it's holistic and this question has been asked before but what roughly is the "D7 cutoff" so to speak? I mean I have an 86 AAA, an 87 AAA and some 89-91 SDGs and I still feel like a D6 nub.

Also I need to get a good keyboard bc this laptop is shit.

Re: 11th Official Tournament

Obviously I'm not on tournament staff so my word definitely is not official, but I made an alternate version of the skill rating system to help me predict who will win D6 and if I plug you (rayword) into that algorithm then you're above everyone currently in D6 in almost every metric.

I would assume that the reason you're D7 even though you haven't unlocked Home Run Derby is due to your consistently good scores in the 86-91 range. The only scores in that range that strike me as being 'bad' relative to your skill level are scores that were obviously recorded when you weren't at your peak (such as Freedom Dive and Almost There).

This logic is only slightly more correct than saying I'm capable of D7 scores because if I tried really hard to improve I'd get there eventually.

the difference is that d3 requires nothing other than muscle memory. you could take a random person off the street that has never played a rhythm game in their life and implant the muscle memory to perform at a d3 level and they would be able to do it fine (yes i know this isnt actually possible but that doesnt matter). the same cant be said for d7+ because at that point the game actually requires physical forearm muscle growth that you wouldnt normally see from a normal person

i would also like to say that it takes almost no time to recover skill at <d5, i wouldnt be surprised to see a d3 player get back to their previous skill level after a 5 year break in a month. it wouldnt surprise me at all because it doesnt take long at all to recover skill at that level. hell i wouldnt be surprised to see a player who has never played a rhythm game in their life get to d3 in a month of playing the game.

I still haven't decided the changes I'm planning on making yet in terms of cutoffs for divisions. So I honestly can't really answer this right now. I've been waiting for the participant list to fill up fairly close to what is likely to be "full" so I can get a better idea of the spread between players in each division.

These two things do not even come close to comparing. You're talking about someone who's already achieved the ability to score D3 type scores vs someone getting to D7 who's never been there. They're worlds apart.
I've been in this community for a long time, running tournaments for 7 years now. I have a pretty good idea of how most people improve and how things go after skill drops. I've seen it tons of times.

I feel like this is an insult to everyone who actually tries but only manages to be D3.

My point being, it doesn't matter whether or not you've reached a particular skill level. If you've been D3, then you might get back there faster, but the difference between D3 and D7 is just a lot of time.

Speaking personally, despite not have fallen below mid-high D2, I don't see myself having a good chance of reaching my previous skill level during the tournament, as I've spent more time recovering from the break I took than I had playing the game before the break. I could see how someone who has fallen farther could consider their chances nil.

I'd consider around D3-4 where you really start to notice the innate skills and physical demand, that only begins to increase dramatically on the way to D7.

To say its all muscle memory just seems... inaccurate?

Re: 11th Official Tournament

It's a blend of muscle memory, clarity of pattern recognition, and reaction time

At the D3 to low-D4 level people off the streets would have the physical capabilities of reaching the usual kps of that difficulty (how fast can they press buttons on a kb), it's a matter of aligning everything together with the three things above

At higher difficulties it does become a matter of "can I physically do this yet" and training because that sort of sustained kps isn't in the realm of what normal people would be capable of

None of this is a dig at lower division players, I was in D2 for several years before really getting into it, at which point I delved deep into improving my pattern recognition and pattern muscle memory and it worked out well

end of story is stop complaining and suck it up

it's 100% on you to decide whether you want to strive to improve, or if you just want to complain your ass off about being bad. saying that you feel like you can't improve to where you used to be is you being lazy.

if you want to stay lazy that's fine. don't ask for people to accommodate your laziness.

Re: 11th Official Tournament

I've been solid D5 for a few tournaments, but only made top 32 once.

Since it's easier to judge people on their best scores than on scores they've recently gotten, looks like I'm there again.

Time to re-learn how to SDG mid 70s. Thanks to Halogen for giving me the tip about running the standalone right through the browser!
