Congrats on this and on D3! Looking like you're in good shape to come out on the top of D2.

Dear D4,

I kinda don't want to play this file again... So if you could stop pushing me further down in the standings that would be great. :)

The D3 file is all kinds of nope so tbh I couldn't care less if nobody AAA'd it I don't blame them.

IDK man, there's just way too many bootraps and those of us that are getting SDGs are seeing no point to push beyond that.

This. No point in burning yourself out needlessly on round 1.

I don't think I am gonna do any better then a FC on Insignia.

Although we have alot of people who have yet to even submit a score, so I have a feeling I'll need to do better to secure a spot.

Re: 11th Official Tournament - Round 1

You're pretty high up, so I don't think you're in any danger for this round. Even if every person who hasn't submitted yet scores better than you, you'll still be well above the cutoff. At the very least, you probably won't have to worry about me :P

I suppose it makes me feel less bad about my score. The eye doctor made it pretty clear I needed eye drops, so it's not as bad as before. I can say now I'm "d3 ready".

Just want to make a note that inDheart has moved up to D3. I reached out and gave the option of the bump after seeing that the score obtained on the D3 file would have been top 12 and the bump was accepted.

Welcome to D3 inDheart! Really glad to see you were up for the challenge.

After some thought, I'd say the best solution is...

Combine Divisions 1-4. Combine Divisions 5-6. Leave Division 7 as it is.

There! Now we have less divisions and people can still move up in ranks. It also supports the idea that moving up divisions gets exponentially harder.

Legitimately reasonable idea right here ^^

Only change I would make is make it D1-3, D4-6 and the 7. The gap between 3 and 4 is usually a good benchmark if you ask me. Also it's more even distribution that way :^)

I mean certainly not for this tournament, seeing how much effort we pushed for getting all the files necessary and all that, but maybe something to think about for next time ;)

New idea for the 12th official tournament: NO eliminations. Then people won't bitch and moan because they suck at the round 1 file...there's time to catch up and get a file you're better at.

And maybe use victory points (scoring based on how many people whose scores you beat in a round) instead of cumulative raw score, a la Dossar's Brutality tournaments.

That would involve individual seeding, and not only would that take an exceedingly longer amount of time, the tournament would then likely take much longer needing to go through individual bracket rounds like that.

And knowing that FFR certainly can always use a boost to participation, they'd likely make it double elimination so that you'll have at least 1 more opportunity to play again. (Therefore again making the tournament longer, + grand finals bracket resets???)

devonin 06-27-2016 02:29 PM

Re: 11th Official Tournament - Round 1

Swiss doesn't have eliminations, that's the point of swiss.

In fact, with the numbers for this official tournament, running it as Swiss would only be 6 rounds instead of 8, and nobody would be eliminated for the whole 6 rounds.

oh for some reason in my head I associated Swiss with single elimination bracket style and was thoroughly confused lmao

yea Swiss would be interesting I guess

Also, because Swiss awards points for draws, you don't even have to get bogged down in "what happens if both people AAA"

Re: 11th Official Tournament - Round 1

Division 1: 21 / 34 (61.76%)
Division 2: 41 / 52 (78.85%)
Division 3: 44 / 51 (86.27%)
Division 4: 44 / 50 (88%)
Division 5: 62 / 82 (75.61%)
Division 6: 44 / 51 (86.27%)
Division 7: 37 / 41 (90.24%)

Seeing these numbers, it is mindblowing that D1 is the smallest division; it truly depicts that the populace on FFR is rather skilled (majority of active players are between D3-D5) and people who complain about the difficulty of this tournament should be reminded of this fact: people are much better than the previous years, alarmingly fast too.

devonin 06-27-2016 03:33 PM

Re: 11th Official Tournament - Round 1

I think it's less that the average person is better, and more that only people who are good at the game are still actually playing it.

If you look at "newer" easy difficulty songs, they have as few as 2,000 people with scores logged, versus 600,000 for the very old easy songs.

The average FFR player is better every year, because fewer and fewer below average players are staying.

I'd say that the below average players who do stay, just get better. How long does one have to stick around during playing ffr to become above average?

Not very long, because the average player doesn't even get past a few arrows.

Well the average keeps moving up also. but yes, I think it's fair to say that "Getting better" is a motivator to stay. People who either don't really feel they are getting better, or who feel like there aren't enough "Easy" songs for them to play are the ones likely to leave.

Well that and the rhythm game market is a LOT more saturated now than it ever was, and probably a lot of people who might have played/stayed here, who like rhythm games are playing them on their phone etc.

devonin 06-27-2016 03:40 PM

Re: 11th Official Tournament - Round 1

I'd be really curious to see what percentage of the 1.9 million users we have actually logged a score on an FFR song in the last say, six months. I would guess no more than 5000.

I'd give you half that

Without the OT, daily users online varies within 250-400 players, though who knows if they play or just view forums, etc.

I would have to assume that a small fraction of the 1.9 mil is bot accounts, especially where the last few months they have spawned rapidly

devonin 06-27-2016 03:47 PM

Re: 11th Official Tournament - Round 1

I'd say between bots, and permabanned but not deleted accounts, it's more than a small percentage.

There's also a good possibility that the number up in the top right just increments whenever an account is created and isn't coded to also decrement if an account is deleted/removed/permabanned.

"above" average can mean a lot of things, but im going to assume you mean around D3. took me about a year to go from D1 to D2 (technically), then 2 weeks to go from D2 to D3. really depends on how much time and effort you put into it.

tbh ive tried every standalone FP from 9-21 and none of them really worked for me on windows 10. simple view seemed to be much more stable than standalone.

requires quite a bit of experimenting :P fp 9 runs like total shit for me on windows 10 even though people say it runs the best for them, idk. I played around with them until i found one that worked well. i get occasional lag spikes (like once every ~100 plays or so) but nothing that really impacts play much.

oh, its quite hard! i think a lot of how people improve at this game is that they go for scores with very few "boos", so that they are trying to hit every single note instead of guessing at the most difficult sections

I've played through the songs in mostly difficulty order, alternating between practicing AAAs, SDGs, and FCs. If I've spent a good amount of time stuck on one song and there's no other songs of that difficulty I'll switch to a different target. Gives a good balance of learning new patterns, getting accuracy down, and practicing the intense focus needed to land a AAA.

I've somehow gained the ability to AAA every song that I've actually tried to today except for the song that matters the most right now; Follow You lol.

Go Go Go Power Rangers, Etude to a Dragon, even Maelstrom (which actually unlocked St. Scarhand!), but Follow You is like "I'm going to give you repeated good bombs and that's as good as it's going to get." I refuse to surrender to the the good bombs!

i actually played through follow you and i'll be honest, i don't think i woulda been able to sdg it where my skill level was at during round 1 of 10th OT lol

however, just keep at it, plenty of time left for improvement. :)

As much as I wanted to prove to myself that I could AAA carnival it looks like the booflag is gonna stay and haunt me forever. Put in another couple hours today and it just ain't happening. I have successfully gotten mindblocked on every part of the song that is faster than 8ths.

I'm kinda debating on dropping from the tournament. I mean I already have both top cut tokens and the only incentive for me would be top 3 which definitely won't happen as good as D5 is so yeah.

And before someone plays the credit prize card on me, credits mean nothing to me and all I do is gamble them.

but badman, what other blank faced avatar wielding 7772-loving D5 FFR enthusiastic extraordinaire would fill your spot? you can't think of one? exactly.
