Re: 11th Official Tournament - Round 1

If you get placed in division 58 and there are 5 other people in it someone is still going to lose in the first round, and the way things look right now there would be complaining about that too.

"Why am I in d58 I haven't played a 58 in like 4 years I should be in 56 because it's way easier for me."

No

the year is 2038. ncaa march madness now has so many rounds of play-in games, they've come to be known as "the regular season"

i've said this every ot since 2008 but the function of a tournament is to produce a winner who given the structure and format of the tournament can be reasonably assumed to be the best among the pool of contestants

it's not to hand out a hundred trophies and shoot off fireworks and fanfare in celebration of everyone pressing the signup button

the fact that you get something even remotely between the two at an incredible expense to the tournament organizers and then still complain about it is just fucking shameful jesus christ

ps. please don't whine about any skillgaps within divisions other than d7, in every other division 8 weeks is enough time for the worst player to close the gap against the best player assuming the best player stagnates in skill

Re: 11th Official Tournament - Round 1

Also can you folks just stop with the placement talk until after the tournament and just enjoy it? I'm sure that the organizers would be happy to field suggestions/comments/concerns about placements or any other tournament business when it's over and they have time to worry about it again.

I put up with it because all and all there's more people who enjoy and appreciate what we do than there are people who just want to whine and complain. I also just enjoy putting events together and trying to come up with new ideas or ways to make it more interesting. I'm sure as hell far from perfect in doing them, but I always do my best.

The bolded part is funny to me because I was just saying over here about an hour ago how I was actually a bit miffed that participant badges were created. Because the whole reason that profile badges came about was me looking for another prize to obtain for the officials since we didn't have anything like T-shirts and stuff to give, (so it was something for the winners back then, not everyone). All we had were the same old tokens and credits to give. Now everyone gets one just for coming in and to me that's kind of meh.

It can be argued that it in fact does not do this at all, and therefore riot.

Probably because the game of placing divisions is a losing one and at the end of the day we really just want to play the game instead of arguing over divisions.

People will deal. They seem to have so far.

tbh this is being a bit pedantic about the purpose of profile badges.

If people feel the need to pride themselves in having participated in several officials and/or being in certain divisions during each one, they'll list the ones they participated in. The badges just give them a way to do that. If they placed and earned a top 8 badge or what not, they'll have those. Having a badge does not somehow make what it stands for more important or devalues other badges just because its not that important. It really just makes a list of accomplishments slightly more compact and better on the eyes.

I'm being pedantic because I think it's silly to give out something just for participating, alright sure. It was meant to be an achievement, simply participating is not.

To my knowledge you can't list only specific ones, I'd personally rather not have the participation badges on mine. Either you show the whole block of badges or none last I knew and I just looked at my profile and saw no way to select specifics.

hi guys i hit an arrow and submitted a positive score i want a participant badge please

EDIT: lost internet mid-edit, nice!

I see nothing wrong with having participants listed somewhere, but having them in the same place as top x badges is a bit strange to me. In a location where achievements are collected and represented by visual indicators, having participant badges makes them inherently less elusive.

Certainly nothing wrong with having them from an archival perspective, but that should be sported elsewhere, haha.

As to where they're displayed is something else entirely, but even if participant badges were removed, people will still have signatures listing their participation and what not.

Maybe this is from the perspective of someone who has never seen profile badges as elusive, but it doesn't feel like you're giving out participation badges as an award for participating (and you shouldn't). It instead feels like you're certifying that someone has participated. In the same way you certify that someone was, in fact, the winner of a particular division.

Here's my hot take on participation badges.

Even if you don't get Top 16 or whatever (my personal best placement is 30th) it's nice to see that you have, in fact, been getting better over the years. It's a testament to all the hurdles you've overcome, all the personal bests you've set. And when you get stuck, just know that with diligence and determination, this too shall pass. Just probably not as fast as you'd like it to.

Well now.

1/ I didn't put words in anybody's mouth. Yes, it was PsychoAngel's -opinion- that 'getting participation badges is meh' therefore, to characterize her position as "participation badges are meh" seems 100% in keeping with her stated opinion. I didn't say she was presenting it as a universal fact, I quoted the -sentiment- behind the statement for -comedic effect-

2/ It was a joke, see the end of point 1

3/

i kinda like that idea actually.
I feel it's a step in the right direction

I think we would need alot more than 2 charts though,
maybe like iono... 100?
consisting of all difficulties
and have varying patterns and lengths
maybe they could have a weight distribution system so our skill level can be reflected by our greatest strengths
so others around our skill levels can possibly be better at different things than we are, and significantly worse at what we are good at.
Making tournaments much more dynamic and interesting

Re: 11th Official Tournament - Round 1

I have no real right or place to say this buuuuut---

There is no better way to have a tournament this size other then a gauntlet style tournament. AKA what we do

There is no better way to make everyone feel welcomed despite their skills/rust then having divisions. AKA what we do.

There is nothing that messes with the format or end results by having songs in said divisions being harder then what said division is use to, as they are only playing the song against people near their skill level. To be honest, even if D1 was harder then D2 all that would change is what the funniest thing about the site was that week, and not the results of the divisions.

And while I am at it if you can't raise you re score in an entire week then by the nature of tournaments you kind of need to be knocked out. I'm not trying to resort to "git gud scrublord" but in a tournament we gotta have losers if we want a winner, and we gotta start someone.

Now pardon me as I get wrecked by D2 again.

Definitely steaming a bit. I had the AAA run on oppIrish up to 2800, and then had the issue that I'd been having on Microsoft Edge that I'd been having earlier. It's intermittent, but it's stupid noticeable when it happens:

Near the top of the screen, pretty much right where the taps start splitting, I got a micro-lag that suddenly caused all of my inputs to fall behind -- I don't know why the hell this keeps happening, and it's so frustrating because this is the only browser I can use that has good framerate, since I can't find a version 21 .dll for Chrome's Pepper Flash. -___-

When I trashed FFR back on the 9th of June, I was playing on Chrome + Flash 21, but the version of Pepper Flash got updated and I can't seem to find 21 anywhere. 20 runs like garbage and 22 is just as bad.

Isn't it noted that older rigs tend to play FFR with more stability?

I saved the computer that brought me up to D7 skill just in case I ever get sick with the instability that Flash is causing or the screen tearing that causes arrows to be cut in half because it runs at like a fraction of the power my currently computer has but it ran FFR in-lack-of-a-better-word flawlessly

I know it takes time and energy to dig the older rig out (if you even have one still) but it might benefit you, who knows

reiterating, AAA'd Rave 7/Staple on Smile/Miku on this same computer that I'm using now back on the 9th of June -- there was an update to Flash on the 15th and the game is unplayable now; I'm willing to bank on the fact that it has to do with the version shift. it would be a lot easier if I was using a different standalone version for some dumb reason, but I wasn't -- and, I can't just simply control the version of Flash inside of the browser since there's a special .dll file for the version of Flash specific to Chrome. I'm trying to find 21.0.0.242, but have not had any success whatsoever. I've also tried installing the PPAPI version of Flash 21 on my computer but I can't seem to figure out how or where it's supposed to be handled so that it interacts with the browser.

I'm interested as to why Edge is having these random input hiccups, because aside from that, it runs even smoother than Chrome did for me...

EDIT: AAAAAA found v21, let's see if it's not just coincidence

Are you using win10? Out of experience, I have had several issues with browser flash (chrome) and with standalone in the past though the standalone was fixable by just running OBS in the background to reduce frame skipping. Though lately I've been having audio/visual lag for the first 10 seconds of a chart where the arrows are behind the music and then it performs a frame skip to catch the two back up together.

tl;dr flash is super sketch at times but in the wrong moments it is in pristine conditions :p

What's OBS?
I don't have input or audio/visual lag, but my game frame-skips every two or three plays and I have to refresh the browser. I can still sorta play when the game's frame-skipping (I AAA'd this round's song that way, actually) but though it doesn't seem to compromise accuracy, it definitely compromises reading ability.
(On a Mac, by the way)

i'm about 5 seconds from just not even bothering anymore, this is stupid -- i've no problem admitting having issues when i'm actually incapable of doing something, but when i'm contending with computer issues that are a result of the game's platform then i see no reason to even bother

this is not worth the frustration. i'll probably try a bit more to troubleshoot and get things working properly but if this is going to be the issue that i contend with the entire tournament, then i'm not even gonna try.

i'll try the standalone + OBS thing - the fact that something like that even needs to be considered is pretty stupid but i'll give it a shot

OBS is the streaming program, Open Broadcaster Software

@AJ, it is pretty stupid to be honest and it doesn't work for everyone. The only way I can get 60fps is to have it open in the background (not on, just open).
