Nope. I'm with you when it comes to just doing things for the sake of doing them. It's not really meaning much to have most of these scenarios, it's just because it is what it is. The pretension comes with the idea that its just trying to look cool and surreal but not meaning anything at all, which these all pretty much convey.

On the otherhand I also think it's unfair to immediately think these are TRYING to make a message, when they're just experiments with different styles. I think the intended message is what makes the pretension or not.

As far as low quality goes, it's just inconsistent. Some things are done better than others, but the inconsistency of it makes them unpolished to me. See analysis.

My opinion stretches no further than "cool."

Also, you could probably pick out abnormalities in PURE photographs too unless you're aware of the entire setting's surroundings, no?

a dude from my graphic design program does similar photo manipulation like this as a hobby. he's self trained and comes from a family of photographers, so he has access to different lenses, equipment etc. idk this thread just reminded me of some of his work
