Who did you look up to?
Who did you look up to when you first started playing either FFR, or stepmania? Who was that person you seen either videos of, or scores posted that made you pretty much want to get THAT good?
And a followup question as well.. Today who do you look up to so to speak? (I am really curious to hear answers from d6/7 players on this) For me when I first started playing I thought that IzzySM was god. It's hard to believe that the above video is 6 years old, AND played index. Izzy was one of those who made me want to get better.. although there was some lesser known people in the FFR community that also encouraged me to get better. Godnick, JTehAnonymous, Superfreak.. just to name a few. ofcourse you have rubix, dossar, thoar(sm), wooke(sm) and the likes that were more known. |
Re: Who did you look up to?
Arch0wl. His videos are what got me into SM and eventually FFR.

looked up to shashakiro a ton. oh yeah and wooke
now i still sort of look up to them but it's more eze or tosh |
Re: Who did you look up to?
i'm still pretty terrible compared to a lot of players but as a casual player i never really looked up to anyone in rhythm gaming (none of that 'omg i'm gonna be as good as X one day' shit).. i just played for fun and now i'm here with the occasional ffr/sm score heh
but i did watch many videos of top DJ MAX / O2JAM players back in the day |
Re: Who did you look up to?
staiain because i'm new and his vids were part of the reason why i didn't drop sm

Re: Who did you look up to?
That's really flattering, Kibblre. Thanks!

Re: Who did you look up to?
I don't really look up at people at this point. It used to be Dynamo, oldCartoon, Isaac, Dossar and Staiain though.

Re: Who did you look up to?
ok, this is a subject I've put a good deal of thought into before, but I never really wanted to talk about it
all of these people (but not just these people) are people I've looked up to at one point or another: * BemaniRuler * JSB * Sl1p (although not in an "I like this person" way) * a few local players * Reach (post-2006) JSB had the biggest influence on my persona before 2006, for several reasons: - his personality is a lot like mine, as is his thinking style - he's 2-3 years older than me or about that, so he would say things I'd think but wiser, and has usually thought of those things - the way he conducted himself was similar to how I saw myself, for better or worse and I still talk to him, and in some domains (especially in financial things) I still see him as a superior that said, no one in this community has had a bigger influence on me than Reach (Andrew). I've pretty much been BFFs with this dude since I was 19 and he has improved me as a person in so many ways; the guidance he's given me throughout life is incomparable. now that we're older I feel more like bros than a student, but when I was 17-18 he got me through some really rough shit that pretty much no one else understood, and it was one of the lowest points of my life. if my friendship were to some reason end, it would hit me on a level similar to when I broke up with my ex who I dated for three years and was strongly considering marrying prior to that, or when the dog I had for 17 years (since 1st grade) died. I'd be a mess. this is the first time I've ever said anything like this on FFR btw, but I've never felt an appropriate time to give an Andrew tribute ilu bro <3 |

Re: Who did you look up to?
Always kind of annoying that, that guy used my name and eventually posted videos of him cheating with quintuple A's and ruined my image for life.
I think what kept me going back in the day was trying to match anobody's scores. There wasn't a lot of index competition. |
Re: Who did you look up to?
Back in the day, it was Smitty (for being so active in FFR scores) and then Shash/Bahamut-X/bill_clinton when they were constantly tearing up the avmiss-fucked songs. I looked up to them all as players, and it was still a proud moment of mine to nab AIM Anthem before Shash.
These days, I now look up to people like bmah, hi19, and WV (among others, I could make a decent-sized list) because they constantly pump out quality stepfiles that I enjoy, regardless of difficulty. Game-wise, I've reached a new plateau that I will not be overcoming anytime soon (school in Russia in 2.5 weeks fucking holla!), so I'm less focused on that aspect. When it comes to stepping files, however, that is something I wish I could do more often and with greater proficiency, and their commitment is admirable. (the fact that I mentioned bill_clinton dates me like a motherfucker) |
Re: Who did you look up to?
Wait IzzySM is bs? I remember PMing him on youtube in like 2008 asking if he was Izzy from FFR haha. Rip my life is a lie.
On topic: Eze is my hero :') |
Re: Who did you look up to?
Around 2006 and prior, I really looked up to Nima. I freaked out and went a bit creepy when I first met him in real life. Now I realize how cuckoo I acted...
These days, I haven't really thought about it. I do know TC_Halogen has a versatility in FFR, SM, and DDR/ITG that I really admire - both in knowledge and skill. |

Re: Who did you look up to?
I had no idea IzzySM wasn't Izzy. What?! this should be more well-known.

Perhaps the only person in the music game scene who hasn't felt this way about someone is Jenith, since as I understand it he is the original 'best' DDR player. But even JSB told me about a time he once saw Jenith and felt starstruck because he had only seen him at a distance. It happens to everyone. This tends to happen when your name is everywhere but getting close to you is difficult, which the music game scene facilitates. |
Re: Who did you look up to?
Have you guys really never seen those videos of AAAAA's? Stuff like him walking while AAAAAing. It's not even a matter of skill it's just impossible. Which in turn makes everything else questionable. Same deal with Nima which was also depressing. They were good at some point and then it got to their head.
