This is the kind of thread that makes me feel bad about myself.
Either way, amazing job guys! |
Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
So I thought this would be a good time to try some speed-painting, because I rarely do any real backgroundy stuff, and ... yeah, I don't know, I don't really "get it". Obviously it doesn't look near the same as y'alls ... And this took like two hours or something.

Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
Can one of you link me to a video that explains how painting in photoshop (that is what you're using right?) works?
I can't find one that isn't just a how to. |
Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
So basically, post your paintings in this thread similar in style to the (previously posted) pics here?
(sick stuff in this thread) I might try something if I have time or feel inspired... |
Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
I'll just dump all of the other paintings I've done in the last week here too I guess.

Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
I like the last picture; the way the sunlight pours through the clouds and crawls over the mountains is awesome. And that water is fantastically detailed and realistic-looking to me. I also like the contrast of the dark trees vs. the rest of the picture and the green firefly highlights up front -- very cool IMO. It's one of those things where you can really imagine being there and what it'd be like.

Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
Blown away. Those are amazing. Especially for the time they've taken.

Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
how the hell do you guys do this
seriously "herp derp practice" I mean it -- sometimes I don't even understand this stuff, whether it's the texture of the fur or the detail of a cluster of leaves or the gradients of light... amazing stuff |
Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
For me, it's a matter of getting the composition right, everything else after that is detailing which requires knowledge of the materials you're painting. And ofcourse knowing your tool which requires practice.
I'd say, just try painting stuff with the photoshop brush tool and a tablet. Experiment with different brush settings, see what fits best for you. Post your work and we'll be happy to post critique on it. ;) |
Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
I honestly wouldn't even know where to begin -- I worry if I got a tablet, it'd wind up being a wasted investment. I have absolutely no clue how those kinds of pictures are put together. Whenever I dick around in PS using the brush my attempts at coloring *anything* look like crap, lol.

Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
Just start drawing. Draw what you see, draw from your imagination, whatever. Just start drawing. Draw everyday (something I should uphold better myself but it's true nonetheless)
If you're bad at faces, draw faces. If you're bad at hands, draw hands. If you're bad at anatomy, practice anatomy. If you're bad at materials such as metal or gold, draw them. Gotta draw 'em all! |
Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
Can draw -- just can't texture/color/shade worth a damn lol
|
Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
then practice that ;)

Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
Hey ps Rene, something was bothering me on the matte painting, but I figured out what it is! Your lighting (sun) is coming from the right side while the castle's shadow side is also on the right side haha.

If you look at your arm, for example, there are darker shades of color in certain areas depending on the angle. Artists use their memory/experience to determine where these different color values would be. I happen to be someone with a poor memory for things like this, and because I require a lot of explanation and shading is more about observation/remembering from experience in general, shading is an absolute nightmare for me. If there is one thing about art that stands out to me immediately and also pisses me off the most when I try it, it's shading. Haha |
Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
I've only started to take a very rudimentary interesting in drawing recently...I've learnt that I have to see everything in cones, cylinders and spheres (and cubes) as the most basic infrastructure of an object or component.

![]() deliver. This is more like a personal brush test than anything. First time Ive ever made a brush of my own on photoshop hahaha I think i might get addicted to brush making lolz. Addition, making it more green. The potion store. ...green + industrial just dont run well with me lol.. ![]() |
Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
Your scale is either really off, or really epic in that last one. That's the largest potion shop ever, it's like 40 stories tall...or your people are tiny xD Still looks very pleasing to the eye. These green palettes are working wonders.
Also, Spit's turn: Half hour quickie ![]() |

Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
FFR:RPG
Jokes aside, considering the large artistic talent and I know of a few capable programmers around here -- why don't you attempt to form a small group and try a sort of indie game... (I'm assuming most of you are very busy though and a game is a massive undertaking) |

Do you think you could make a video demonstration, maybe sped up to show what actually goes on behind those 30 minutes? |
Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
Layering plays a big role. You cannot do something like that from top to bottom, left to right, in one fellow swoop. Rather from back to front and all around, starting with shapes that are simple or strokes, planning it out and building up those simple shapes.

Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
About 45 mins on this one. I made a timelapse video for it as well for those of you trying to learn.
![]() **edit: I actually just thought about this, but uhhh, that video isn't the best learning material since I only painted on one layer (if you want to correct a mistake with only 1 layer it's 10x more work), so maybe I'll make a better timelapse video more geared towards beginners next time lol. |
Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
**** that, paint on one layer. Forces you to be confident with your strokes and if you make a mistake, you just paint over it. :J
|
Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
I agree with that, but beginners aren't quite as confident as you or me and working with different layers is super beneficial (and learning to use layers is extremely useful anyway).
|
Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
Which is why I think starting with painting on one layer would be more beneficial, since you develop a better understanding and more confidence early on. Layers are useful regardless though, I agree.
|
Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
![]() 30 minutes (zag is my witness!) for the most part painted on one layer, did some color correction stuff after |
Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
That looks awesome.
I just hate how everything flows then there's a couple random strokes that show up really square and kinda just thrown in. (Bottom right corner-ish) |
Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
that's cause it was a 30 minute speedpaint, I didn't polish anything lol

Re: ITT: spitfire post painting
Speedpainting isn't about detail, it's just getting a feel for the scene, establishing a base mood or concept. They're quick and grungy for a reason.
Onward. Not exactly a speedpainting, was up all night with this. Painted in about 9 hours. ![]() Wow imgur compresses the **** out of this, artifacts everywhere. |
