The whole song is swingy, so I would go as far as changing your 16ths to swing 24ths/12ths.

Sometimes I get confused about note placement as well just because either my response is a little behind, or I don't notice until someone else points it out for me.

EDIT: could use some help on my own part. Making one of my songs, and the vocals are not in line with the regular notes, almost. What do you guys think? should I swap out the 24th (purple) notes for 16th (yellow) notes during the verse? or are they fine as is?

I still want your camera megamon.

That's what I figured, thanks for the help. :P

I couldn't really hear the song because of the clap assist, but yeah I'm assuming it would be 16ths too since a single 12th doesn't really make sense :P

Yeah I guess I should have taken the assist clap off, but oh well, I'll post it when I'm done. XP

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDixkocOBio

here's the link because I'm not sure if embedding would work since this one's unlisted. the song is at like 0.6 speed because I usually slow songs down when I step them.

if you're going for a super easy laid back file then what you have is fine i can totally see what you're doing and it plays out ok (although i really have no idea if you can keep it interesting for 4 minutes) but to answer your question no there isn't a 12th note there

if you're going for super technical then:

-assist tick can be misleading because your mind can just as easily fit the assist tick to the song rather than the reverse (also on lowered rates it can actually cover up sounds that would otherwise be fairly prominent on 1x) rather than using assist tick i prefer to play the chart itself to see how well the chart meshes with the song + you have notes to sounds that aren't audible on 1.0x

-technically the synth is on 16ths and also technically falls on the snare on m3.25 its not exactly the most clearly audible but its there (this is of course assuming we have the same mp3)

-the patterns aren't jacks but triplets (that result in a runningmen with the anchor on the 16ths which is i guess what you stepped -8ths) although i myself would not be opposed to putting jacks there instead but then again i have been known to put jacks to about anything and everything sooooo

-you missed a couple 24ths in there (it falls between the last 16th of both jack sets and the respective [12] jump afterward) if you wanna get super deduper technical although its barely audible on 0.6x and you probably wouldn't hear it if you weren't listening for it (though fairly prominent on 1.0 and might be something fun to call attention to idk)

i actually have no idea if you already know all this or not but you did indicate you were fairly new to stepping

it's also entirely possible that i have absolutely no idea what i'm talking about but you did inspire me to rechart the beginning of my file

Yeah I usually start stepping with just the music, then I use the assist tick just to make sure I'm on beat at certain parts, but thanks for the tips, feedback more than anything is what's been helping me the most with my files. And for this file I'm wanting to make it somewhat simple, not too difficult mostly because I can't really step anything harder than a 9 or so using FFR's difficulty system, but I'm getting there. :P

On a side note, VS PSYCHOSHY sooo good XD

I didn't expect there to be many bronies playing FFR when I rejoined, it's pretty suprising.

Now all that needs to happen is for one of us to make a simfile of a pony song (that blatantly has ponies in it, vs psychoshy isn't good enough B:<), and we'll be one step closer to world dawwwwwmination <:3c

- Personally, would've preferred if the file was thoroughly layered for the percussive elements in addition to the vocal emphasis. It provides a lot of interesting layering opportunities.
- Layering's acceptable. Only downside is that the file is fairly uninteresting and boring since you barely layered any of the background stuff and the majority of the chart is straight 8th stream with some offset 16ths.
Yes

Although I do agree with him that it wasn't thoroughly layered, I didn't want to overlayer it (I'm new to stepping :P). But when I saw the green 'yes' at the bottom, it filled my heart with joy. Also, congratulations are in order for you as well Megamon.

Re: Team Pony

I might step another pony song for it if I get around to it :P

gold stinger 03-3-2012 08:05 PM

Re: Team Pony

I can guarantee that your jaws will drop when you see the song. I remade many of the offsync notes, remade 2 parts of the original 20% cooler song, and fixed the video to work in both Stepmania and OpenITG, just so as long as Gundam-Dude compiles/fixes the song in Stepmania, which I'm pretty sure he does.

No more grey split bar as the song background anymore. Now it's the full-fledged 20% cooler typography. You can literally say that the "File and the Pack have gotten 20% cooler."

ddream is easy to learn once you get passed the unfamiliar interface

simplest way to figure it out is to open a finished file with it and just poke around

zoom to level 7 and hit i to turn on the wavelength filter and the rest should be fairly intuitive

e: since there appears to be a modicum of interest in sunshine and celery stalks i've uploaded my chart for it so you guys can look at it/pick it apart/use it as a baseline or whatever (mostly referring to the somewhat crudely layered beginning here)

gold stinger 03-17-2012 11:44 AM

Re: Team Pony

That's a pretty good song for stepping, but I can understand from your perspective where you're getting mixed up just from listening to the song. Sounds like there's a 18th note back-end starting beat. Best thing to counter these notes is to stick with the regular notes at first and ignore those notes. create the entire song not using those notes and save it under an easy chart. Then copy the easy chart into a hard chart and layer the original notes you created with the offbeat notes that you come across. That way, you can tell whether you are stepping it right or not based on the original notes you created for it. When you finish that you would not only have 2 charts, but a nice song finished and out of the way.

If someone does complete the song, do you think you could send me a zip or rar file for the song? I'd love to play it. Really good song. I'd love to step it myself, but I'm already multi-tasking over 10 songs at the same time, and still have homework to do that I'm procrastinating. :)

Haha I'm pretty sure that's how the whole brony thing started in the first place, or at least it's how most people get there start on the show. I personally ended up watching it because of a starcraft 2 trailer + mlp mashup that led me to watching one episode to see if it really looked the same as it did in that video, and that one episode turned into the whole series lol.

Oh don't worry, I'm sure pretty much everyone has asked themselves that same question. In modern society, something like this has never happened, so technically it's not normal, but we're aiming to change the definition of normal.

Also, welcome to the herd.

Normal doesnt exist. Normal is an illusion. Same as perfection. Normal is only defined by the government. Other than that, Normal doesnt exist. We're all normal in our own special way, (aka Unique.) soooo... yeah.

thanks minaciousgrace & Gold stinger, I got allot farther. Though the file still is very easy and not very fun to play. It's not totally on sync, almost but it makes a diffrence between a marv and a perf. I'll be finishing it off soon.
I am also stepping another file that has allot of doubles, It's called Flank up! and it's about 30 seconds long. When I'm done, if anybody would like to try it out then please ask. :)

It should be in a place something like this:

Should be located under /Stepmania/Songs/(GROUP NAME)/(SONG NAME)/
If it had no group, then it's /Stepmania/Songs/(SONG NAME)/

Windows Explorer has a (in my opinion bad) default of hiding "known" file extensions. A "known" file extension is defined to be one if you double-clicked it, some program would open and use it. Go to your Folder preferences and change that.

Your file might have been accidentally hidden in a folder called "Compatability Files". Windows Vista and up seem to do this sometimes for a reason I'm not sure of. If there are files hidden in this section, there should be a button you can click on called Compatability Files.

I'll see to making some free time tomorrow in my busy schedule or on the weekend for stepping the song. I've had myself booked the last couple of days because I missed the 3 days before march break, and then missed the monday after march break. Ended up with all the work that was supposed to be done on march break, and I have to pretty much do 1 project a night, for the next 6 days until I'm caught up.

btw, nice music to listen to while writing out my science project.

I gave up on making the song less than 15 seconds in. Have fun.
The BPM and the gap is proper, I double checked, the song
just naturally goes between 4th and 8th notes because of the singing,
and it throws the purple (3rd) notes to purple (12/24th) notes,

My brain hurts.

It switches for literally THE ENTIRE SONG.

EDIT: Nevermind, Found out what I did wrong. I really gotta learn to zoom in while adding silence at the beginning of songs.

Yeeah, sorry that I have to be the one that sticks out, I just like creating the song with the regular openITG commands. More comfortable and less confusing.

@TBG Fixed the song, omw to completion, lol derp 11:35 PM. I gotta wake up early to throw my science project together. Will re-schedule to complete after school if no one decides to shove project due dates in my face.

TwistedPhoenix 03-22-2012 12:01 AM

Re: Team Pony

Stepping songs is a bit difficult. I tried using DDReam on one of my songs, but it had so much noise in it that it was just a fat bar with mini spikes on it. XD

A couple different tools I use are Mixmeister's BPM Analyzer, and this manual BPM tool for when songs have like 50 different BPMs: http://all8.com/tools/bpm.htm

I did step Forever Dreaming, Foozogz's Remix of Omnivore's Forever Asleep, but I got a big fat paragraph of review. I suppose for my first file it wasn't all too bad, but I need to do some more songs before I take on the more difficult stuff.

I've been considering stepping one of Makkon's newest songs, Dregs, but I'm not quite sure how to start it out. It's a 145 BPM, and whatever sound is used that starts on the second beat (or 3 seconds in really) confuses me. It seems most like 8th notes would fit it best, but I have to choose between short holds or plain arrows, and whether or not to use doubles as I plan to put a lot of layering into this song. I know exactly WHAT I want to put steps to, but I can't actually do it. XD

bmah 03-22-2012 12:03 AM

Re: Team Pony

I don't recommend DDReam for beginners. I'd start off with the simple Stepmania editor. I always use this.

@gold stinger: to each their own I suppose. *shrugs*
Do realize though that the above two programs are more standard in terms of usage in this community.

megamon88 03-22-2012 12:07 AM

Re: Team Pony

tbh ddream is really only useful if you're having syncing problems

bmah 03-22-2012 12:48 AM

Re: Team Pony

That's what I use it for. I know several people actually step in DDReam but I personally only use the program as a syncing tool if Mixmeister or my own ears fail.

TehBoredGuy 03-22-2012 12:58 AM

Re: Team Pony

@Everyone, thanks for the recommendations, What is the website for Stepmania? i assume like.. Stepmania.com or something right? I did download DDream, and i cant figure it out lol.. so maybe the stepmania editor will work better. as long as the song will still work on FFR by the time im done.

Ok so i tried playing stepmania 3.9... The game is way out of sync.. like i cant even hit notes the way i should be able to, when i press a key there's a large delay before it registers in the game. any way to solve this?

Well, there should be an option called vsync. I haven't used SM 3.9 in a bit, but I'm pretty sure it has that. Play around with that and see if it helps.

Also, if it doesn't quite fix it, try this.

There's a preference in StepMania 3.9 and newer called GlobalOffsetSeconds. You can adjust this by editing StepMania.ini.
Edit: So about the V5 install; Have you tried running it as admin, or disabling an anti-virus? Those might be blocking the install.

Edited again! Yay. Buy anyways, where are you installing it to? If you have it set to program files (the default place), change it. I have mine on the desktop. I think I remember there being something about not putting it in Program Files cause Windows is snobby and doesn't like it there.

Yeah i think thats what it was too, for the V5 install. As for the rest of the problems for 3.9 i have no idea. i'll give them a shot though.

meh.. I give up. i tried editing the settings and the globaloffsetseconds thing but i give up. lol i'll just leave the stepping to the pros. i just wish i could step a song.. cause if i did it would turn out perfectly as i plan it to. lol like when i play other peoples steps, like they dont play out nearly as i would've planned them to, lol which throws me off. but meh i'll leave it to you pro-steppers.

Large delay before a key registers you say? That sounds more like a hardware issue than a syncing problem. I've never heard of latency issues for a keyboard that bad. That has nothing to do with being a "pro stepper"...see if you can find a way around it. I could be wrong though if your keyboard's responsiveness works well for everything else.

I also recommend downloading v3.9 as opposed to v3.95. Hopefully you weren't trying to do the latter.

i have no idea if it was 3.95 or 3.9. the file said 3.9 so i assume it was exactly that. ANd why i said i'll leave everything to you "pro steppers" it wasnt the program or anything i was saying that cause i'm just not gonna bother trying to learn to step songs lol

I applaud you for taking an easy route.

"The only winning move is not to play at all."

I can safely say that you will get plenty of fun making your first couple of songs in DDR if you ever get it working, but the process of completing the song is quite time-consuming, especially for longer songs that contain no song edits or isn't a remixed version of the song (like most songs on regular DDR machines, ranging between 1:00 to 2:30 long.)

Re: Team Pony

Would uploading my Stepmania folder allow for usage? I'm not entirely sure whether or not it would work, as it uses another folder in appdata for profiles and such, but I think it should just create that file when you first start it up.

Also, there are only a few people that I can think of made good steps from the get-go. Pretty much everyone else had to learn what to do and what not to do from experience. I say you should go for it, and after a few songs decide whether or not you really want to continue making more.

Awesome!

And don't forget to tell megamon what kind of siggy you want, it'd be kinda lame if you watched the entire series because of those siggies and then didn't actually get one :P

Lol I was busy stepping some files (avast fluttershy's ass, flank up, sunshine celery stocks) untill for some surprisingly unfortunate unclear reason a great erase took place and killed all my files. Won't be restepping them for a while, I worked bloody hard on them.

how did that happen?

Re: Team Pony

Ouch, that sucks. I had that happen on my old vista laptop before. I turned UAC off and everything was fine after that, but I still ended up losing my files. Was your stepmania folder in program files by any chance?

Honestly, I have no idea at all how it happened. I noticed the stepmania launcher had vanished from my pc, so I redownloaded it. I booted up stepmania but it would just quit out everytime. Eventually it worked and started up but all my files were gone. very annoyingly mistirious..

Uhm yes, the folder was located in Program files(x86)

Re: Team Pony

There's your problem. Vista is very finicky about program files, so it's a good idea not to install it there, and instead in documents or something like that. You should be able to find your lost files in a hidden folder somewhere, but unfortunately I don't remember what it's called or how to access it, sorry :/

Sorry for extremely late reply but yeah I'm still stepping it, but I haven't had any time to work on it. I've been so busy with work and school so I'll probably finish it sometime in the summer but anyone else can try their hand at stepping it, I'm not that great of a simfile artist considering I'm still a beginner. so yeah good luck to anyone else stepping that file, mine will be a work in progress for quite some time XD

Also, sorry to hear about that m3t4, nothing more frustrating than losing data.

Your file might have been accidentally hidden in a folder called "Compatability Files". Windows Vista and up seem to do this sometimes for a reason I'm not sure of. If there are files hidden in this section, there should be a button you can click on called Compatability Files.

Is this what you mean?
