New lens

I'm probably going to be wanting to post these and such, so I'll make a thread for them.

I recently bought this, and so far I love it, though I've barely touched it.

This is the first panoramic I took, stitched in Microsoft ICE.

Before editing: http://i.imgur.com/T6vjc.jpg

After editing: http://i.imgur.com/fkBbd.jpg

:-D

So yep, I'll just post some more here when I take them (right now, pCE)

Wide angle USM have been wanting that one lol.

Re: New lens

That's quite the pricey lens you got there, any particular reason why you went for that one?

Love the edited version, really good composition and just overall feel.

Looks like I'll be joining you photographers soon as well. Bought a T3i, should be here Tuesday.

Spenner 12-2-2011 02:49 PM

Re: New lens

Thanks ;) and T3i is a good purchase, can't wait to see some photos from you 8-)

I chose the 10-22mm over the 17-40mm mostly because I wanted something reallllly wide if I was going to go for a wide angled lens.

While the 17-40 will have more zoom, it won't go as wide, and that's what I was looking for in this lens (but not to the distortion factor of a fisheye-- becomes a bit difficult to work with pleasant landscape shots with that. At least with this lens I have a choice of whether I want a lot of curvature or very little).

The next lens I'll want is a telephoto then I think my arsenal will be set. Then I'll want a canon 7D.

Yeah :< but for my first few long exposure HDR shots I thought it was not bad, so it's a great start

Here's just a few more. I have a lot that I took that night, gonna be awhile before I have it all edited/stitched.

^Meh... first pitiful attempt at an HDR panorama.

(^ I really love the water in this one. It was really windy that day so it sucks that the trees are fuzzy -__- )

This was a pretty cool panorama, dramatic angle. A much better HDR panorama.

Spenner 12-25-2011 11:46 PM

Re: New lens

I gotta tell you, I've worked out a formula for shots like that first one there that's very little involved.

http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/f/20...er-d4k8drb.jpg

I take all my shots in RAW and run them through an HDR program, even if there's no HDR effects, just to see what I can fine tune with the photos to amplify the details I want.

Then really all I do is, after I've stitched them/cleaned up the edges by healing/cloning, up the vibrance, lower the saturation, play with some curves and mask out towards the edges (I like when there's a focal point and the edges kind of trail off slightly), I use the high-pass filter sharpening technique (duplicate your working layer, high pass filter, look for the level where most of the details are crunchy looking, then make that layer blending mode Soft Light (or hard light) and then erase around the tips of trees or wherever it might clip).

Thar ya be. More to come. Many more.

Re: New lens

I know, I'm so cruel :']

Here's some more, went on a long walk the other day to a place I hadn't been for about a decade. So nostalgic, and it's changed so much. I wanted to capture that feeling of "wow, this has changed a lot since I was a kid". Which maybe affects only me in this case, but I'm doing it to please ME :P

http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/i/20...er-d4l6k8b.jpg

http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs71/i/20...er-d4l6m8w.jpg

http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs70/f/20...er-d4la0l9.jpg

http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/f/20...er-d4la32u.jpg

The last one there is my favourite so far.

I've stopped using HDR as seen in the past two pics, it's just not useful to me anymore for the kind of mood I want to convey. It's handy for bringing out textures and contrast though, so I might dabble with it if a photo is lacking.

darkshark 01-4-2012 06:11 PM

Re: New lens

I don't care for the lens distortion in the first one, it detracts from the feel of what the photo could have held imo.

The second one is my favorite, really feels cold and alone. The last one is pretty cool seeing abandoned tracks like that, but it seems washed out, could definitely bring out the contrast of the tracks more and it would add so much more depth and possibly emotion to it.

Are all of these from a tripod or handheld?

Spenner 01-4-2012 08:41 PM

Re: New lens

Agreed. Mostly going for cold and alone type feelings, the last shot was just really a shot of nostalgia for me so I made it a bit of a more washed out style on purpose, but like I said, to please me :J

All of these were on tripods.

Re: New lens

Did I mention I got ANOTHER lens? I might as well just make this my new photography thread.

I have a 50mm f/1.4 lens now, so that's fun. I didn't get to use it for this experimental photoshoot I did yesterday...

Very simple rig: a blackboard on chair, mason jar full of water (I WISH I had something bigger) on a towel, tinfoil and my camera/flash.

Unfortunately I had to use my macro lens to shoot these, because the small jar wouldn't show much detail with the 50mm. Way harder to work with, 95% of the shots were too blurry or just out of focus/not in the shot. Here's some that were decent:

None are exactly mind blowing and I KNOW I could do a way better job with a bigger water tank. I might just go get something cheap, it's fun to play with this.

It also took me a long time to realize I had to change my flash mode to High Speed in the camera so that I could go past 1/200 shutter speed, hence why there's so much blur <__> after that they looked fairly sharp but none were very interesting.

Re: New lens

These pictures feel off somehow. They aren't as sharp as they could be...maybe a bit grainy too. What iso is this at?

Also, do you have the MagicLantern firmware? I just put it on my t3i and holllllyyyyy eff it gives you so many more shooting options. Really opens up the cameras capabilities.

LongGone 02-12-2012 04:55 PM

Re: New lens

By "off" I believe its the framing of the shot. It seems that in the pics the detail/focus is lopsided to an edge enough to distract the viewer from viewing the picture as a whole

If the raw shots were zoomed out much more, you would have control over cropping/how you want to frame your shot; but of course its much better if you have the idea in mind when composing the shot itself

Besides that the clarity is fine to me IMO, other than the framing these are pretty good

Spenner 02-12-2012 06:29 PM

Re: New lens

Indeed, most of those are not cropped at least very much. Just experimenting, it's really frustrating trying to get really sharp splashes, I tried for a few hours today with little success with the setup I have/lack of time to prepare. I'll move onto something else for now.

Re: New lens

The stuff you can do with Magic Lantern is really powerful from what I've tested so far.
Just set up a time lapse from about 4am to 9am on my front porch with the intervalometer feature, which took 5 pictures (HDR bracketing in 1 stop increments) every 10 seconds, so you get a super nice HDR time lapse video. I forgot to take my ISO off of auto so it came out really grainy and was a waste of time, but you get the idea.

Being able to take 2 pass HDR video is insane too. The focus tools and PiP magnification for focusing are really useful, try those out on your water splashes ;D

Well currently, its just for personal use. But maybe to submit to a "Design a pair of skis" contest. The reward being, I get my designed skis made for free. I don't think there is any cash prize or anything.

Why such heavy vignetting? imo having it that heavy detracts some of the detail out of the shot...otherwise...really great shots ;D

Spenner 03-29-2012 04:17 PM

Re: New lens

Just helps the mood I like to employ with those types of shots I guess. The cat pic definitely could've done without it on all sides or with some branches masked. But I know what you mean ;D now that I have this GREAT lens I'll be doing a lot less editing with my photos. I won't need to.

Here's an unedited and uncropped pic from my trip to the zoo yesterday. Many more to come.

(critiquing myself: Could have stopped it down a bit less than 2.8, and open it to 3.5 or something to keep the rest of the details as sharp as some of the face and the beak. But this was my first real test drive for this lens, turned out pretty damn well and SUPER sharp considering the lighting, it being handheld and stuff.

Yea, you should have used 3.5 or (lower?); its important to make sure the entire "face" is in focus (right now the eyes are blurred out, there is not as much "impact" to it as it should)

Would love to see what else you would come up with

Yep, live 'n learn. Still, that did a pretty remarkable job at 2.8 I must say :-D I think more than anything I wanted to see what I could do with shooting primarily at 2.8, seeing what ways I could find around it if some details were being lost. It's a really fun lens, I'm glad I got a full days' worth of practice with it! And yes, more to come.

Again, wishing I had more than the f/2.8 on this one but DAMN what it did capture was sharp even at 100% crop :D

Then again, if I had the wing in focus I would have preferred to be zoomed out a slight bit more and perhaps get the branch it was sitting on out of focus instead.
