American Interweb Censorship

http://americancensorship.org/

For those too lazy to click:
"On 11/16, Congress holds hearings on the first American Internet censorship system.
This bill can pass. If it does the Internet and free speech will never be the same.
Join all of us on the 16th to stop this bill.

Website Blocking
The government can order service providers to block websites for infringing links posted by any users.

Risk of Jail for Ordinary Users
It becomes a felony with a potential 5 year sentence to stream a copyrighted work that would cost more than $2,500 to license, even if you are a totally noncommercial user, e.g. singing a pop song on Facebook.

Chaos for the Internet
Thousands of sites that are legal under the DMCA would face new legal threats. People trying to keep the internet more secure wouldn't be able to rely on the integrity of the DNS system.

How you can help
If this law passes, sites like Tumblr and Facebook could be shut down for letting users post freely. Join the protest to stop it.

What do you guys think about this? I don't think it's actually going to happen, but if it does, I'm going to need a f***ing Happy Meal.

Not sure exactly how far it will get, but if it did make it through I sure hope FFR isn't in any potential trouble.

I was talking about this with a couple of friends. I find it ridiculous, and this bill should not be passed. .__.

Yeah, i just got this link from a friend of mine. I cant see something like this getting passed, though if it does... I can only imagine the consequences.

I wouldn't be surprised if this bill is passed. But its an outrage, its against the constitution and they have no right to do this in my opinion.

'Murrica all the way. Why should the Interwebs be subject to censorship when free speech has been an emphasis in our society since forever ago?

C'mon guys, this shit is in and out of the media like a sine wave. Bill won't pass, it'll blow over, your lives will remain the same, move on, etc etc

There is no way this will pass in its current state. The only feasible thing I can see happening in the future is a bill similar to the patriot act involving the internet.

And what exactly are we supposed to do to prevent congress from agreeing on this bill?

This is pretty much UBB all over again and this will by no way pass.

Re: American Interweb Censorship

Jeez didn't they just try like a few days ago and got it rejected?

honestly, the chances are slim. Besides, The White House vows to support and back Net Neutrality

Re: American Interweb Censorship

Silly congress, you can't censor the internet!

EDIT: On a serious note, this will never pass. Nobody's going to agree with restricting freedom of speech just to censor something.

There's no way this is happening, but if it somehow does, I'm putting all my powers of the press to good use and causing an outrage of the world. >:)

What a horrible idea. Obama's ratings would sink like a stone in water if this gets passed.

why Obama? Obama has NOTHING to do with CONGRESS pushing this through to law. Obama just signs documents with his asshole and looks pretty for the rest of the world. Obama's nothing but a pawn.

But he still has the power to veto it and make congress have try even harder to get it to pass.

You would be correct if Obama explicitly signs the bill into law. But it could also become a law if the president doesn't sign it. So what he chooses and doesn't choose to do effects how he is viewed, but might not necessarily change any outcomes.

Personally, I think he would veto it if it actually passed in congress. Then people would like him. Internet people...

Edit: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...RQ1M_blog.html

Derp, it says in this link that was posted earlier that he would.
