Why Do People Hate The USA?

Why do internationals hate (or like) the United States? As a whole or citizens themselves?

You really have to do better than a one-liner for a critical thinking thread.

Except for the George W. Bush part, it's pretty true. Now we're looked at as "wow they were dumb for electing a black guy just because he was black and they don't want to look racists even though they are".

Re: Why Do People Hate The USA?

c'mon guys, this is hardly a CT thread, especially with everyone leaving one liners.

First off, a reason why people associate the United States as a group of lazy people is because a good majority of the country IS lazy. Lots of people in the country rely on horribly funded programs and only care to make it by, even if it means they get to do it without working for their own well-being. "Oh, a new program to help me because I'm too lazy to go out and fund things for myself? Sure, I'll do it; it won't hurt me one bit."

Second off: if you're going to attribute the election of Obama to anything and everything bad, realize that you're living in a democracy, which has everything run by a consensus given by us, the voters. He didn't elect himself, the people elected him. It's probably also these very same people who are extremely lazy and can't be bothered to do anything who put him up there.

The US has been incapable of doing anything properly because the voters buy into a ton of propaganda, rather than actually reading into the laws and regulations that are being passed -- it's ALL public domain and people can read it before it gets put into place. This alone is a perfect reason to consider Americans lazy, because a majority of them pretend to care and pretend to understand what entire laws and bills entail. Listening only to media does nothing, because all the media does is get it out to the people and explain it in lamens terms.

Another reason is that the United States are an extremely proud people. This in turn leads them to have an enormous ego in terms of "patriotism." It's a major turn-off to some people. It also doesn't help that a fair chunk of Americans don't know jack about other countries.
Now, don't get me wrong, that's the stereotype, I've met a lot of you who are not as such, but I've been to European countries. Now because I'm from Canada, they assumed we were Americans. We were treated very coldly... until we mentioned we were Canadians. Then they warmed right up.

Re: Why Do People Hate The USA?

Because most see Americans as not knowing shit about what's going on in other countries. It seems most are just the typical close minded middle class fatty who lives by what they see on TV, which is mostly true in mostly true in upper middle - lower middle class groups. This can not be said for EVERY person in the United States, due to the fact that they're 300 million of us (3rd? most populated country on earth) and they're are different stereotypes for whatever part of a state a person lives in.

However, I don't understand why some Europeans criticize the united states for be unacknowledged in foreign politics, due to us Americans being on a separate continent it would be sort of understandable for most of us not to know everything about a small country with equivalent population of a small US state. Also, Europe is mostly unified in the term of relations (ie: European Union) so it is more often taught what the president and chancellor of a country only kilometers away.

I honestly don't see why anyone would criticize patriotism though, there's nothing wrong liking the country you were born in even if it sucks.

Re: Why Do People Hate The USA?

Honestly, how are Americans stereotyped as lazy? If you go to other countries they work maybe 4-5 hours a day with a 2 hour break in there somewhere. All the shops close and they take constant vacations. They claim we are uncultured and that we don't seek out other experiences outside of America, but when we go to their countries we are treated with disdain. Why bother? Aside from that, instead of traveling, the vast majority of Americans are working. Americans work themselves to death, and that is why we generally have more than other countries. I know quite a few men that have come here from Italy and Portugal, and when they went out to find labor jobs they were completely overwhelmed by the fast paced long hour work days. They simply cannot handle the demands of the American work force.

I think the trend to bash Americans stems from jealousy, but could just be the American in me talking.

Outside of the Japanese, no other country works even close to as many hours a year as America does.

Because they are probably ignorant, or they don't like the government, not the U.S itself...

Well I think Canada doesn't have enough patriotism; far too often, people are meek when it comes to national support. The US has accomplished many amazing things due to patriotism itself. I think the ideal situation is to have a healthy amount of patriotism without being too full of it. I think you're referring to the latter, when too much of one thing is indeed annoying and potentially problematic (e.g. racial issues, necessity of fulfillment in everything, etc.). I do agree that in some places of the US, the patriotism is too much. But I don't mind people sticking American flags out of their households and such.

There are cases when Americans are deemed "lazy" and deservedly so, but there are many cases as well when Americans are very hardworking. Beyond workload, I think some of the negative perception comes from how Americans approach their work or ideology.

I didn't really put too much thought in this thread. Kind of like all of the threads I've made.

Maybe a move to CC?
