Ahhh, alright, so you'll say the contradictory prophecies aren't meant to be taken literally, but the prophecies that did happen to occur ARE meant to be taken literally (hence your World War I argument, etc)?

Seems awfully unfair, don't you think? You're basically saying "Everything that fits my belief you should regard as literal truth, but anything that's contradictory is obviously just an allegory." You're shifting the goalposts, here.

Re: What happens after we die.

I have no factual basis for this. This is purely an assumption.

The amount of people who choose to believe religion, as a whole percentage of population, is declining over time.

The amount of people who choose to avoid religion, as a whole percentage of population, is growing over time.

If this is true, religion as a whole would logically one day cease to exist.

I'm aiming to speed up the process. I'm not trying to change someones mind that has been made and set in stone. I'm aiming for the people who have the potential to change their minds.

And if people are seeing this as a waste of time, maybe they should stop wasting their time here. There's great power in choice.

Contradiction? Hmm... Let's see that link is someone's Opinion. Opinions are not facts. They are based on what someone BELIEVES how the verse should be worded. Therefore that link is not logic. Sorry . P.S. I've said bye many times. xD So one more time. Goodbye. xD

Oh and sorry MrRubix if I offended you in any way. Yes we all have our own beliefs and all. I have mine. You have yours. But I will stick to mine. Thanks.

Re: What happens after we die.

How verses should be worded has been lost through translation inaccuracies long ago. Either way they are overly broad and can be interpreted in any way anyone pleases.

If you are going to pick and choose what you believe from the bible, then why don't you just do it by yourself? Are you unable to come to any kind of belief by yourself? Are you really such an unintelligent person to where you can't even decide for yourself what you believe is right or wrong?

Don't answer that, it's rhetorical.

@Izzy

Now it seems like you need to get over yourself. Stop putting words in my mouth: I was always given the choice to believe what I believe by my parents, and my decision to be one of Jehovah's Witnesses is mine and mine alone, not my parents. What I was taught made sense, and I stuck with it. I can tell you plenty of kids who were raised as Jehovah's Witnesses that NEVER accepted it as truth and who decided not to be one, and that was their decision. This is mine, and my kids will get to choose just like I have, you can be sure of that. I never meant to say evolution didn't make sense, I was trying to convey that I believe creation makes more sense than evolution. If evolution made more sense, then I would most certainly believe evolution, but as it stands, I believe creation makes more sense.

@Mr. Rubix

If you really wanna hear me say it, then I will. If that is what being ignorant means, then in this regard I'm all for it. Why? Because I'm happy. I'm truly happy with what I believe, and my beliefs have led me to a wonderful life so far. I have two parents who love me, TRUE friends who are there for me whenever I need them and who can count on me to be there for them, a family that is truly happy together, and my troubles throughout my life so far have been few and far between. You ask why I believe what I believe, and with what proof. The truth is, you can't understand my proof because my proof are my own personal life experiences.

Seriously guys, we're getting nowhere. Do I physically have to say you guys are right and I'm wrong for you to drop it?

Your posts aren't offending me, but I do find them a bit humorous in their self-contradictions.

So are you saying the Bible's prophecies aren't meant to be taken literally? They're open to interpretation and opinion? If they aren't meant to be taken literally, then why did you liken them to real-life, literal events and human conditions? Surely you see the problem with this.

Re: What happens after we die.

Sorry I do have to reply to Izzy. We use a particular bible called The New Translation of the Holy Scriptures. Other bibles are abused and use the wrong interpretation. For instance the King James Version. Version? Hmm. Version is what somebody thinks how it is worded. Translation is putting it into better english instead of using words as thou, shall and etc... I do understand my bible really well. Some scriptures are guidelines and others are suppose to be taken into literal sense. But my bible says more clearly what others such as versions can not. But thanks I understand my bible well.

Re: What happens after we die.

No, because you still don't know anything about evolution. It would be a very unsatisfying victory. It would almost be like the church brain washing a young child. I can't imagen it's very satisfying. Maybe that's why they keep doing it.

Ryn2075 12-19-2009 01:29 AM

Re: What happens after we die.

I find the fact that you wanted a victory in the first place to be a little pathetic. Really, it's a discussion, not a contest.

Granted, religion may very well be a happiness-inducing influence for many. It can provide a moral foundation for some in order to life a healthy life. It can help humans find "meaning" or "purpose" in their lives. However, I will simply point out my own take on all this: Just because something makes you happy or helps you live a better life does not mean it is true. I might find happiness in the thought that when I die, I'll be in an alternate dimension surrounded by a plethora of hot girls and all the stir-fry I could ever dream of. There's still no reason to believe such a thing to be true just because it's psychologically appealing.

I have to say lol at MrRubix comment. I love stir fry!!!! xD

Oh man, stir-fry rules! Seriously, made me laugh (not in the bad way, it was just funny). XD

Your statement is completely credible. Maybe I am living according to something false. I can't really say if it's false or not. If, for the time being, I'm happy though, why should I change what I'm doing? If it's gonna bite me in the butt later, then I'm ready to accept that, but for now, I couldn't be happier. Don't I have that right?

Re: What happens after we die.

People forcing their children to not make their own choices and beliefs is halting the progression of all humanity towards the pursuit of truth.

It is one of the most selfish acts possible because it is essentially denying another human the opportunity to life his or her individual life.

I will leave it at that. I have nothing further to say to you people.

Izzy, TAKE A READING CLASS. Really...

I JUST said that my parents didn't force me to do anything, and that I made this choice on my own, AND that my kids would have that same choice. Did you not catch that? Or did I just imagine your post just now?

You are quite annoying sir.

I like when people don't read my posts. I'm not shooting anyone down, or if I am I'm not intentionally doing so. Most likely you interpret what I say as shooting people down. That's fine. I'm listening to what people think, and then giving my two cents. I believe I'm right and I believe what he says can be right if afterlife is wrong.

Of course!

My whole point here though is that when deciding between A and B, one should be fully aware of the arguments of both before choosing. If someone's going to "not believe in evolution," they should first understand it correctly before choosing to reject it for whatever reason.

If you choose to believe in A because it makes you happy, then that should be your basis of belief, but it's fallacious to say something is true simply because it makes you happy. Truth in our universe is independent of what we may "feel" is correct, incorrect, intuitive, or counterintuitive. It's one thing to say "I live my life for happiness and therefore choose to believe in A because it makes me happy," but it's another thing to say "I believe in A and not B because B is wrong for these reasons X, Y, and Z" where X, Y, and Z are incorrect claims.
