What keeps you using 3.95?
I'm looking specifically for features, not graphics.
So, not things like "there's a cat in the bg", but things like the information shown or options available. If you simply think there isn't a reason to upgrade, you should probably read the release notes for the last few releases, or suggest something that should be improved to encourage upgrading. |
Re: What keeps you using 3.95?
I use 3.9 because it loads faster that sm 5 by a long shot. I only use it for play testing files though. I use sm 5 for actual playing

Re: What keeps you using 3.95?
If you think 3.9 loads faster, you should really try 5.0.7. I've done things to the song loading time.
|
Re: What keeps you using 3.95?
Slightly less lag on 3.95.
Other than that there isn't really a reason outside of unique themes. Loading speed is horrendous. |
Re: What keeps you using 3.95?
sm 3.95 because the default theme, and default noteskin
seriously if i could have these 2 on sm5 i'd be happy to switch (no ddrmax7 theme), like legit port the default theme |
Re: What keeps you using 3.95?
I prefer its stepping features over SM5
|
Re: What keeps you using 3.95?
sm 3.95 its more easy to use.

also from my experience sm5 works better on older hardware than 3.95, like when it was still sm5 beta I tried both on my old pentium 3, both lagged but 3.95 lagged a ton more :/ |
Re: What keeps you using 3.95?
it would help if it didnt seem like you guys tried your hardest to make it as difficult as possible for players to smoothly transition from 3.95 to sm5
it took me 8 hours to get an even remotely playable setup and the only reason i invested that time into getting a working sm5 setup is because of the newest features (score recording blah blah) before that nothing sm5 offered was worth the headache |
Re: What keeps you using 3.95?
most of the complaints I get from SMOC are...:
- No easy way of transferring profiles over from 3.9/3.95 - Lag issues - Loading times (pre-5.0.7) - Relative lack of themes compared to 3.9 and the high entry bar for being able to make/edit them without breaking things. |
Re: What keeps you using 3.95?
I've tried 5.0.7 and it still loads slower than 3.9
|
Re: What keeps you using 3.95?
Backward compatibility with SMO. I want to see the server forcefully require updating. I want to see SM development incorporate SMO development and make them one in the same.
Then once the server can only be accessed with the latest version of SM I want to see the SMOP updated with the ability to transfer simfiles to everyone in the room or at least be able to transfer .sm hashs so that exact files can be verified and official more secure ranking can be implemented. I think this would be a good starting point for SM to make a comeback. |

AFAIK, you can just copy the stats from the profile to SM5's folder. Unlike what that thread says, you shouldn't have to rename the judgment counts at all, the code has cases for handling those names. If you move the songs from being loaded in a normal Songs folder to being loaded from a folder listed in AdditionalSongsFolders, you'll have to replace the "Songs/" part of the song path with "AdditionalSongs/" (and be careful to include extra stuff around it so that you don't screw up songs that have the word "Songs" in the title). What makes the transition from 3.95 so hard? Should just be a matter of moving songs or setting the AdditionalSongFolders preference to point to them. Then a bit of time setting preferences. For the loading, if you're not loading the exact same set of songs, it's not a fair test of load time. Also, the first load of 5.0.7 had to go through and create the cache for the songs, so that subsequent loads could be faster. Not sure whether you know that. I haven't noticed any lag problems on SM5, but I'm not one of those people that quads everything either. (I tend to score in the 98.5-99.5 range on pad 9s to 14s that are easy to score on when I play them on keyboard) If it's visual lag, you can set the visual delay with F3 and Y/U. About 1-2 times per week, if SM has been up for more than a day, I'll see a 0.4s glitch, but it's extremely rare and unpredictable. (I happen to know it's close to 0.4s because my reading mods give ~0.5s before the arrow hits the target) Theming has a higher bar to entry because themes are capable of so much more now. Doing things right requires a modest amount of programming skill. One of the reasons for editing a theme was speed mods, and that became unnecessary before SM5b4. The high complexity is why I try to make sure nobody has a legitimate reason to want to edit my primary theme (which doesn't support online mode, so I haven't posted it here). SMOP can probably never transfer simfiles for the very obvious reason of copyright legality. Practically nobody in this thread is being specific, which isn't very useful. From IRC: < Jousway> I'm just waiting for Kyzentun to show up in the FFR 3.95 topic going "Jousway doesnt speak for sm5 so ignore him" again |

The themes are lackluster in 3.9/5 compared to SM5 where you have really accurate DP % as well as in-game accuracy counts as well as a better results screen, but for playing and editing, I still rather use 3.9. |

Re: What keeps you using 3.95?
I've been on SM5 for the last year or so, but I suppose the thing that kept me from switching sooner was that for some reason the timing/judge feels more inconsistent than on 3.9/3.95. I know that the code between the two in that regard uses the exact same metrics, but it's hard to overlook.
Example: Say I get an early perfect on Note A. Soon afterwards, I hit Note K slightly earlier than I hit Note A but get a marvelous (which obviously shouldn't happen). This is something I never experienced with 3.9/3.95 and it occurs very, very frequently on SM5. I imagine it's only something graphical within the themes and stuff because ca25nada's themes seem to help alleviate this problem (at least a little bit). |
Re: What keeps you using 3.95?
Alt+Tabbing in SM5 causes screen to move, I have to reset it by going to Window mode and back to Full Screen. Also 3.95 lags less, and I have played on OpenITG/3.95 for a looooong time.
I started to use SM5 this week and it has many many features and the only thing that annoys my is this Alt+Tab thing. |
