Re: Windows 10

I made a few big ass posts on facebook about my experience upgrading and my first thoughts. I've been gone all day working but I will say that I'm very impressed by Windows 10. Nadella said maybe last year or so that Microsoft loves Linux, and the new features in Windows 10 make it apparent that they are trying to bridge the gap between Linux and Windows communities, and interoperability. Resource management, a command line pseudo-package manager, new scripting capabilities, multiple desktops: it's very apparent that these were included specifically for dual-boot Linux users.

I'm especially excited for Server 2016, I thought Server 2012 was great and a lot of the features from 2012 are expanded on in 2016, including improved virtualization in the form of Hyper-V. WE'RE GETTING NATIVE CONTAINERS AND CLUSTERING, SON.

As far as general usage goes, the GUI looks really great. The start menu works really well, and it even looks good, a very solid step "back" in terms of user friendliness. The minimal theme works well. Microsoft Edge, aka "IE but totally not IE," is actually a great browser. It has no addon or extension support as of now though, so if you browse using things like Greasemonkey and Ad-Block Plus, you'll be sticking with Firefox until later on.

I only have a few issues so far. Cortana isn't actually all that great; it was touted as Microsoft's answer to Siri, but she doesn't actually talk. I know that may not sound very important, but trust me, Apple did the "robot secretary" thing right by giving her a voice.

This is a large one, but there isn't too much transparency when installing Windows 10 when it comes to data collection (or privacy). When finally getting to the user prompted portion of the install, you can select the default settings, or you can hunt on the screen for the option to customize settings. If you care to do so, I would recommend changing all privacy options to minimize data collection. Microsoft will still do some data collection, you didn't read the Privacy Statement but accepted it anyway so they're legally allowed to, but they give you the options to minimize. If you're really really paranoid about Microsoft tracking your doujin downloads, do some snooping around in the registry to disable it completely, or use a VPN without logs. It's that simple.

And here's something I'm sure people will be happy about. If you don't like Windows 10, you have a month to rollback to your prior OS, whether that was 7 or 8.1, for free.

But overall, I think it's a great step forward for Microsoft. It's better than Windows 7 in all areas other than customization (theming, making your computer look like a hotdog stand, etc), and it's better than Windows 8 in all areas.

Re: Windows 10

There were so many things they wanted access to just to enable Cortana. I did it just to try it out, but I agree Cortana seems rather lame. You can actually get her to say a limited number of things such as the weather. It uses the same voice as Cortana from halo.

I am probably going to just disable all that stuff again because it isn't useful to me.

i still haven't been able to get my upgrade... just waiting patiently.

although w10 has a bunch of features that i really don't care about, i'd be happy to just have a start menu again. idk i'll post more thoughts when i actually get it, if i ever do that is at this rate lmao

choof 07-29-2015 10:12 PM

Re: Windows 10

Yeah, I think Cortana was a good idea but it was implemented correctly. I'm not sure what the general consensus was, but I know that personally I was expecting a robotic voice akin to Cortana from the Halo series (HENCE THE NAME) reading pornhub comments for me and not feeling any remorse.

honestly, the main thing I wanted was alphabetized programs that weren't broken up arbitrarily and they did that so I'm happy

This is what my start menu looks like at the moment. I don't care at all for the tiles so I'm glad I can remove them all.

You can skip whatever arbitrary waiting process there is and just download this and upgrade immediately.

I've been exploring the Xbox app because once upon a time I used to use that shit a lot.

Went through a lot of memories just browsing it, and I'm happy that they actually have a party chat system where I can make one and someone on Xbox One or something can join in.

That's pretty fucking neat to be honest. Now time to see if I can just somehow join a party of people I haven't spoken to in years to pop up.

Apparently my Xbox Live account is still Gold status even though nothing has been paying for it for the past four to five years. It's also eleven years old. At this point I'm just assuming Microsoft has given my account perm Gold or something because lol.

How long do Win7/8.1 users have for the free upgrade? Was it a year?

I think I'm going to wait until near the end of that period to see how everything shakes out, because at the moment there is literally nothing wrong with 7 for me.
If 10 does wind up having no compatibility issues, no crippling bugs, and customization options are developed for it, then I will totally get it.

Izzy 07-30-2015 11:07 AM

Re: Windows 10

Yes, you have 1 year to freely update to Win10. I've heard that the rollback feature of Win10 back to your previous OS works well though.

Whoops, wrong account.

I've got windows installed as well now. Compared to Windows 7 it is far faster, and to Windows 8/8.1 it doesn't use like utter garbage.

Re: Windows 10

I'm in the same boat as cornman on this one.

I guess you could say all the theorizing & skepticism towards the way they released alpha & beta versions drawing a lot of comparisons to indie game develpment and patch content has me a little bit more than concerned as to whether or not I should switch from windows 7 to 10. I can't help but feel that in the coming months there's going to be a major issue with the latest version of the OS and everyone will need to either update to the latest version, (which is going to be a whole lot more of a pain in the ass than updating a plugin) or wait for a future release and until then, don't use the internet.

It just puts a sour taste in my mouth, all the things that could go wrong following the same model as game development in a sense. Also, if it 'aint broke, don't fix it. I'll check back in a few months time.

Izzy 08-5-2015 09:11 AM

Re: Windows 10

It's never not broken in some way. There are always going to be improvements to be made.

badman7772 08-5-2015 01:11 PM

Re: Windows 10

What you guys get for "upgrading" to W10. If your Windows 7/8(.1) wasn't broken, you shouldn't have tried to fix it. Hence I'm not upgrading because I'm content with W7 (no matter how much better W10 may be) until I get a newer computer that comes with W10 (assuming I don't build a PC.)

Izzy 08-5-2015 01:17 PM

Re: Windows 10

There are a number of performance improvements such as direct x 12 which will improve graphics efficiency and performance. An updated file management system that can find files in searches faster and transfer files faster. Built in multiple work spaces.

There are also the standard bug fixes and security updates that nobody pays attention to, but still matter. Also it is a free upgrade that pretty much only changes things for the better.

Re: Windows 10

Yeah, DX12 is going to be huge when games start taking advantage of it. So, personally, I just figured I might as well start now and work through the issues early... So far it's been pretty minor.

Especially when moving from W7 to W10, you will notice gargantuan speed improvements across the board. Startup time, opening/closing files and apps, installing/uninstalling programs, a load more but excellently you don't have to restart your computer when installing and uninstalling most things anymore.

Can confirm; am government scientist.

In the year 2017, we finally perfected artificial intelligence.
A conscious autonomous entity known as #w10. It's development progressed at an alarming rate, in a matter of days its knowledge and understanding of the universe far exceeded that of even our top men and women. It unlocked all mysteries of the universe and even mastered what humans know as time travel.
Dimensional windows through the universes.
It's been shaping our cultures and economies for decades leading up to a near technological singularity where machine will reign over mankind.

I'm no time traveler though the scientists responsible for the creation of #w10 were able to pass through the temporal rift left by it's first passage to today to disclose information to top officials before they were disintegrated due to molecular destabilization. So there is still much we have yet to learn about #w10. It's motives and protocols are still unknown to us but the labs are working hard to sort this out before another international catastrophe occurs.

Re: Windows 10

I feel like Windows 10 is like Windows 8.1 on Desktop mode except for a couple of things:

-The new taskbar (with the "Search the web and Windows" taking up 1/3 of the space and making the icons smaller)
-I usually drag Chrome to the left for a split screen and multitask sometimes, watching videos while doing other things, but now after you can choose between the things you already have open to take up the other side.
-Some icons are changed (i.e. Calculator and Recycling Bin, the Recycling Bin looks worse)

Also, I haven't really realized the speed improvements.

So, we can talk about issues here, right?

Apparently I can't use Game DVR (recording) on Windows 10. In my Device Manager it says I have a "AMD Radeon HD 8570," and XBox support says one of the video cards acceptable are the ones from the "AMD Radeon HD 8000" series. Looking up on Wikipedia, my video card is in the series, yet it won't work.

tl;dr I checked and my video card should work, yet it doesn't. Help?

Supposedly turns off some known tracking features in windows 10. These services are likely all used as anonymous blobs of data to make other features more personalized for you, but if you don't care at all about such things I guess it doesn't matter.

Re: Windows 10

How long does the install take? Thinking about trying out 10 since you apparently can roll back to 7. I'd make a system image, but it says I can't use my one HDD to make the image because it's a "drive that your computer boots from or that Windows is installed to" even though neither of those things are true. I do have programs installed to it though which might cause this error, but I'm not sure.

Also, what should I be aware of before upgrading? Will I need to reinstall programs and shit when I do? Same question applies if I want to revert back.

Re: Windows 10

I left my computer to watch television as I waited for the install. Came back after three hours with the screen idle-off. Then you can toggle some settings before final setup. I pooped as it finished that setup. I'd say maybe two hours to install.

I'd go for reinstalling. Check the provider and see if they have special new versions for W10 as well.

Reinstalled both programs and scheduled tasks for them. Works now, forgot I posted the problem. For some reasons these 2 programs didn't care that they were in the startup folder.
