Day 793: Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon by Pop Smoke

I've known who this guy was for at least two and a half years, and it seems he only blew up really after he died because now EVERYONE is bumping.

Rest in peace, man, someone born after me dying is always sad. But also, this album is as mediocre and overlong as I was expecting.

Day 794: We Will Always Love You by The Avalanches

You KNOW I had to hop on this one ASAP.

This sounds distinctly like Avalanches but is definitely WAYYYYYY less sample-based than their last two albums. Is this anywhere near as good as Since I Left You? That's really not fair, this should be judged on its own merits, because that's become one of my all-time favorite albums since I've seen them live three and a half years ago and has remained as such. FUCK COVID.

But anyways, this at 72ish minutes is something I would normally call overlong, but I found myself just sinking into the vibe and letting their usual kaleidoscopic magic work itself on me, and I honestly enjoyed every second of this as an almost cohesive piece.

I bet someone else here is going to listen to this and go like "you fucking idiot this shit sucks" well FUCK YOU MAN. EAT MY ASS. This isn't something I'm gonna listen to all the time, and picking out favorite cuts will be hard, but as a singular work this is extraordinary. Also having Denzel Curry feature is mad random but I'm not complaining at all. MGMT is a less bizarre feature, and I priorly only liked one song by these guys but now I like two! This writing has no structure. I am barely awake. All I know is this shit had the exact same effect on me as Loops of Infinity (A Rave Loveletter) but even stronger. Maybe my love of stuff like this, combined with these asinine ramblings, is indicative of my poor mental state.

Day 795: My Agenda by Dorian Electra

Y'know I really don't understand this genre. It's like I hate what I'm hearing with a burning passion, then something comes on that I really enjoy, almost makes me think of DDR or something, then it goes back to cringe shit.

Fuck man I don't have time for this. Why am I reviewing something with Rebecca Black as a feature anyways?

Everything I said about that Dorian Electra album applies here too, but to a somewhat lesser, less frequently annoying degree. Well, besides the fact that this album has no features as far as I can tell.

Anyways, instead of writing about this music, I wanna respond to this

So this is Nero's Day At Disneyland apparently, and it mostly still sounds like that project! But there's now vocals, and a sort of pop vibe to a lot of these songs, except that pop vibe is kinda fucked over by the sheer abrasiveness of the glitchiness and drums go fast.

Part of me thinks this needs multiple more listens. Part of me thinks "eh, one more is probably all it takes to get it". I found myself absolutely loving some tracks, and found the rest to just be kinda annoying. Interestingly enough, being long or short has no dictation on how much I like a song on this album! Is that unusual for me? I don't know, so how the fuck would any of you know? I've been doing this shit for 7 YEARS NOW? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Is that a Venture Bros reference? The boomers at Pitchfork called this the second best album of the year, after that Fiona Apple album that I liked just fine but wouldn't call outstanding at this point or anything.

beep boop big unranked year end chart behind the link

you've reviewed a bunch of these already, but would love to see your takes on a few of them, mostly meitei, gallery s, zora jones, jean dawson, tim reaper and jockstrap.

as for things you've already reviewed,

re: some of the more ~zoomer~ adjacent things you've reviewed this year: zoomer music peaked this year with this, pulling from the soundcloud glitchcore scene and dogshow records stuff that has blown up in the 1000 gecs wake. some features dont land super hard but the super collaborative online spirit is here in full force. (and while u reviewed the food house record idk if you heard thos moser, which blows everything on that project out of the water)

re: bladee: 333 is boring but i really enjoy exeter, maybe you'd like that one more?

re: jessie ware: what's your pleasure is my definite AOTY, was glad to see u give it a 9! was huge on every single during this album rollout and when the rest of the album was same quality it was a lock. AOTY and maybe my favorite full length since CRJ's Emotion in 2015.

re: ichiko aoba: i dont love it as much as 2018s qp or 2013s 0 but i see why this blew up so hard on rym. ichiko aoba already had a really decent following on there (as far as japanese language artists go) and when they redid their sorting algorithm on there earlier this year 0 shot up to first place of 2013 bringing in a lot of new fans. that combined with this being her lushest production to date and day 1 buzz from fans giving it a high chart debut definitely helped. its definitely good but a confluence of factors i think led to its strong chart performance. i still really love it myself, but hope it encourages other ppl to check out her earlier work.

re: new avalanches: this was kind of a disappointment for me but im glad others are really enjoying it. wildflower is an all time favorite and since i left you isnt far behind. there are some major hits (born to die has been on loop since the album dropped) but little with it has stuck with me after 4 listens and the features are wiiiiiildly inconsistent for me. we'll see what i think in like a year though, havent had a ton of time to spend with this one yet.

I've gotta be honest guys, although I've given him fair ratings I've always thought this guy was a bit overrated.

This, however, is HEAT. I think a shorter runtime works wonders for this guy's style when it comes to cohesive projects, as I loved every second of this and fell immediately into it's atmosphere and just, like, world, and when it was over I felt like I wanted MORE.

Also I'm glad he's mostly sticking to his current pseudonym and not releasing more stuff under the name Milo because I'm no longer thinking of Yiannopolopodopoponopolis.

Day 808: Big Science by Laurie Anderson

Let's start the year off by listening to some "canon classics" that I never bothered getting around to. I hear this one get called "groundbreaking" a ton.

Aaaaaaand I only like two songs, Born, Never Asked and
O Superman (For Massenet). The rest just doesn't do it atmospherically for me. It's definitely groundbreaking, but simultaneously sounds more dated than a lot of the electronic stuff that came before this (like I will 100% still jam out to some Silver Apples).

Day 810: I've Seen All I Need To See by The Body

Here's another band where my senior year roommate Cooper loved them and I was entirely unfamiliar but I THOUGHT I was familiar because of their similarity in name to Show Me The Body.

This sounds nothing like that band, but is as face-shredding, soul-disintegrating and just plain ROCKING in a completely different way. I can see complaints from people because these songs all kinda sound the same, but they sound the same in a great way, just pure ugliness, aggression and sludge, and as a result of it being kinda short and the songs not being too long it doesn't overstay its welcome. This reminds me a lot of an album Cooper showed me from The Goslings but this is a completely different genre and style, and I think I like this better.

Maybe 2021 is the year I find a fuckton of heavy shit that I like instead of hip-hop or electronic stuff. Who knows? It's still early.

Day 811: Isles by Bicep

Man I can't tell if everything thus far I've reviewed from 2021 (including Bob's Son even though I put it in my top of 2020) is a slapper because

A. During COVID when they couldn't tour, musicians honed their craft more and strived for perfectionism to wow people at home
B. COVID is making me love all music more because of how much I miss concerts
C. I've just been getting high more often and more intensely recently and thus I enjoy music more.

Anyways, another great album. This didn't wow me as much as any other 2021 album I've reviewed, but it's consistently great and groovy and a ton of fun while also being laidback. Go check it!

Day 816: Collapsed in Sunbeams by Arlo Parks

HOOOOOOLY shit I'm getting old, this person was born this millennium? I mean, that's not exactly rare these days, but any time I see it, I just feel old as fuck. Maybe this is a heavily extended whiplash from when you go from listening to nothing but boomer music in your preteen and early teen years (up until 14 or so, and yes 90s music and Daft Punk are boomer now according to the interwebs) then going the complete opposite way and listening predominantly to newer music in your early 20s. Instead of dead or almost dead people, I have music from people who are probably gonna die after me, especially the way I tend to live life.

Okay anyways, this album, when I first found it? It was higher ranked on the year charts, and you know I'm too lazy to find music more ways more than a few times a year or something. It's sank since, but I dunno if that's indicative of the quality or simply backlash. After all, the first ranked album for like the first two weeks of the year was half plagiarized and half pedophile.

I like this a ton, this is probably better than half of the things ranked above it at the moment. It varies between smooth and subdued or... still smooth and subdued but really it's not all that same-y. Almost every track here is good, the lyrics are okay if not particularly memorable (I hear this girl is a poet?) and the production is just what I need. Good album.

Man I can't wait til I get this Master's degree so I can get an actual job.

Day 817: Working With God by Melvins

I updated the thread title again. Will I ever do that retrospective thing I promised like almost 2 years ago now? I SWEAR I WILL I just don't... have time. Okay onto the music.

These guys are a REAL throwback to me now, I still enjoy some of their classics, especially their earliest shit, from time to time but I don't listen to it often. There's a whole lotta sludge out there and I have to be in a specific mood for a specific band. Also, didn't Buzzo get cancelled for appearing on the podcast of the anti-homophobia buttplug squeeze Nazi Vice founder guy? I'm not sure if it took or if people just forgot and stopped caring as is the norm for most people attacked by the cancel culture boogeyman. Either way, I'm listening to this for free on Bandcamp, he's not getting my money, who cares?

Aaaaand I wouldn't have paid for this either way. I see at the bottom of the page that they're boasting this is the 1983 lineup, which coincides with some of my all time favorites from this band, but this just feels... uninspired? These guys were never someone I came to for emotional honesty, but when you open a sludge album with a Beach Boys "cover" you start to wonder if things are just too stupid. A lot of this album is just really, really fucking stupid, and that was clearly the goal. What's lame is that there are some hard hitters in here, but they're a mere handful in a sea of stupid shit and boring shit.

Now squeeze a buttplug out your ass, Buzzo. Prove your libertarian ass isn't homophobic.

I used to always mix these guys up with Dance Gavin Dance which drove me away from them, even though they sound nothing alike. This album? I like the danciest parts, and I applaud their experimentation and eclecticism, but big chunks of this album just get grating to me, particularly whenever the vocals shine too bright. In spite of that, I'd say this is a fine, pleasant listen as background noise even with some moments being less than desirable.

Sadly, this album isn't good for a laugh. It's... pretty mediocre. Just average soft rock and ballads for the entire 45 minutes. Nothing sticks out good or bad, this is just middling. Good production at the very least, but I fail to see how anyone could be amazed by this stuff. I say good for the LGBTQIA+ community (or really, just the gay men) that they mostly ditched her for Charli XCX as their cis het woman icon.

Day 828: Zapper by NANORAY

Yay, something I actually like to come out of this year, this reminds me a lot of Machine Girl's earlier releases, except honestly I think this has a bit more kick and style (and weeb) to it. I need to get back to work, and also find more shit to listen to.

I think I'm heavily biased at the moment towards

A. Shit that makes me wanna go to the club (because I can't, even though most things I listen to that sound like club music are actually nothing like most of the clubs I go/went to)
B. Shit that makes me think of sex (this does not I promise you)

Day 829: In Ferneaux by Blanck Mass

Phase I was really good. Phase II lost me. This guy should stick to making songs under 10 minutes with actual titles.

Also, is Fuck Buttons good as dead? Is this guy just gonna keep trucking on solo while Andrew Hung scores for Jim Hosking or whatever? I'm okay with that I just wanna know.

Day 830: Roadrunner: New Light, New Machine by Brockhampton

Apparently nowadays all the kids on TikTok are saying shit "omg my Brockhampton phase ewwwww" and you know what? Fuck them. To this day, I still think Saturation II/III absolutely slap and are loaded to the brim with bangers, capture many different moods quite perfectly and most of all gave us some of the most enjoyable cuts to shout along to with your friends. Does that make me super white? Maybe (although most of the fans of this band that I've ended up meeting have been POC women) but I don't care.

However, I will say that since 2017 when these guys were the hot new thing (god, I can't believe it's been nearly 4 years since the summer of these guys and Flower Boy, take me back indeed) pretty much everything they've dropped has been garbage. There's been good cuts here and there but none of their album projects really stuck with me (iridescence actually got WORSE upon further listens) and I was wondering if they were running out of steam, or if the expulsion of Ameer Vann did something to throw the group chemistry out of whack, even though he wasn't that interesting of a rapper.

Anyways, this album is surprisingly good! I think waiting two years to drop it did them well, as it is a bit front-loaded but in general is surprisingly consistent, with only two or three songs really doing nothing for me or worse (typically when they lean more into that "boy band" sound they're trying to ditch) and some of the best cuts rival the best shit they did at their peak. I'm not amazed by this album, but I was expecting it to be a lot worse than it is. Also, having features permeate throughout for the first time ever was a VERY smart move. The features often dominate over the actual group members (wassup Danny Brown) but in reality, who cares if it makes for better music? And even when the track isn't good, sometimes the features give it a bit more value (I'm not a fan of I'll Take You On but Charlie Wilson definitely adds some much needed flair to it).

Okay, I really need to get to finishing this assignment due tonight.

Yeah it's pretty and I enjoyed it throughout but I guess I'm just not smart enough to see why this is flooring everyone. I also definitely enjoyed it way more during the first half.

Finally something on the charts I really like! I usually find a language barrier hard to get past but I don't care if these lyrics translate to absolute garbage, everything from production to melody to how the album is structured is just perfect and leaves you wanting more. I want more.

Day 834: Harlecore by Danny L Harle

I saw this had a high number of ratings and I was thinking to myself "hmmm.... where have I heard of this guy before?" Halfway through the album, I remembered that this guy was tied to [adult swim] somehow. Then right around when I finished my first listen, I remembered that this guy's was used on the Nazi show they had for 6 weeks! I'm not gonna bother googling to figure out if this guy has any weird political affiliations, I've already listened to this whole thing.

And my opinion? God, that was ANNOYING. A few tracks were bouncy fun that made me think of club nights, but the majority of it just agitated me to no end. I don't doubt that this guy could definitely make some bangers, but the whole aesthetic of this album reminds me of hyperpop, and I dislike the vast majority of hyperpop. I tried to give this and started skipping whenever a track was getting on my nerves, and that was more than half the songs. Ugh.

So close to graduation. So far from getting a job. So scared of the future.

Day 835: Autoditacker by Mouse on Mars

I did the stupid thing and go for the highest rated release on RateYourMusic when I should've looked for Bill Maher's favorite albums of all time! Then I could've realized that his favorite from this band is... half as long. I've listened to this 3 times now.

And, uh, I like this a lot actually. Some of these songs sound kinda... 90s, sometimes in a good way, sometimes in a bad way, but always 90s. It's pretty varied stuff too, from ambient shit to stuff that would make any good club wanna dance to to stuff that I'd dance to alone and look like a weirdo to... I'm losing track here. Okay whatever this is majority good to me.

I'm a zoomer with the physical health, body and soul of a boomer I guess.

Day 840: In the Corners of a Sphere-Filled Room by Pile

Well, y'all all know or SHOULD know how much I love this fucking band. I still think they're the absolute greatest thing to ever come out of my hometown of Boston. This album is a real departure from their norm though, with no actual verse-chorus-verse songs or pop-friendly structures to be found. Instead, this is a mix of what mostly seems like jams or demos mashed together and fucked with to create a sort of ambient/post-rocky experience.

Do I like it? Yeah, I do, but not as much as I usually enjoy these guys, and I expect I'll be returning to it a lot less than I STILL return to Special Snowflakes or Don't Touch Anything or Pets or Worms. I applaud Rick for being experimental as all heck but I want an album of songs.

The first few moments of this album I thought it was gonna sound like some dub shit, but nope. This sounds more like Nomeansno more than anything.

This is either an album I'll come to love upon a few more listens, or I'll realize that I like it even less than I do now. As of right now? Middling. Some really great tracks, some boring ones, but almost all of them could be trimmed quite significantly.

A bunch of nerdy anime/hip-hop groups I'm in on social media are claiming you can't diss J Cole if you like this guy and listen to him.

And I don't get it. This guy's lyrics and flow are nothing to write home about, the songs all sound pretty same-y and the beats are generic yet... This is probably one of my favorites this year so far.

Fuck, do I have to listen to the new J Cole now?

Day 846: The Off-Season by J Cole

I've come to the conclusion that the people who diss Pooh Shiesty to defend this guy

A. Spend WAYYY too much time debating PS4 vs Xbox
B. Wished they were Goku as a kid
C. Would have the aux ripped from them at any party

It's not terrible but it's completely forgettable, there's not a single real standout here, and some of those spiritual lyrical miracle bars are truly awful, especially when he references shit like cancel culture or whatever the internet perceives as a sneak diss on Noname.

Day 849: Worlds by Porter Robinson

Okay so this is another one where I was planning to review it way back in the day somewhat closer to when it was released or something, listened to it several times, then forgot to review it. Now I'm doing it because I have requests to listen to his new album and I probably was gonna do it anyways, but why not go back to this first and finally get this logged in?

And, yeah, it's mostly how I remember it. Back then I probably would've said "these songs are mostly too long and have the same vibe to them all, even though they're not BAD, and I bet I'd enjoy this a lot more if I was on MDMA or something."

Let's amend that.

These songs are mostly too long and have the same vibe to them all, even though they're not BAD, and I would 100% enjoy this more if I was on some sort of empathogen or really any substance. I don't dislike this stuff, I just don't need a whole hour of it while doing mundane tasks. The short interlude (I think it's supposed to be one?) is actually my favorite because it's the weirdest thing.

I also bet you had I done this back in 2014 or so I would've put way more effort in. I'm trying this time to add words because I want something of semi-substance... Nah that's redundant, I'm just spewing word vomit.

Corporate life sucks. But I'm seeing this guy live in October fuck yeah
