This is important to avoid multiple users contacting the same artist or label for their permission more than once. When you ask for permission, be sure to include: • What FFR actually is (include facts, statistics, the basics of gameplay). • That FFR is non-profit (the site doesn't get any money from the use of their songs). • A link to the site. • A list of artists who have already given permission (a link to this thread is fine). • Confirmation that their music is safe and will not be available to download. You can also refer to this thread when asking a new artist. Remember, we are requesting to use their music, so take care to be respectful and let them know that it's a privilege to have them on our site. Here's a thorough guide on how you can ask for permission : (information taken from this thread) [spoiler] Note: Credit for everything listed in this thread goes out to TheRapingDragon. Aside from the v1, this v2 explains and demonstrates how to effectively and properly get the permission of song artists (v1) and how the results of your permission gets are handled now-a-days (v2). So, you've just heard some awesome music and want it in FFR? Well, you've come to the right place. This thread is going to try to help you go through the stages of trying to get a permission. Step One - Be accurate. Before you even begin to try to get a permission you have to make sure that all of your information is accurate and correct. Make sure that you have the right author / song title / album title (where applicable). Make sure it's not a remix or something like that which could get FFR in trouble with the original author who never gave permission for the remix in the first place. The other reason for accuracy is so that you show the recipient of the email that you know what you are talking about. Depending on what you are going for you will need to follow a different step. If: - You are asking an independent artist / group for their permission then go to step 2. - You are asking a signed artist / group for their permission or a record label for any artist at all then go to step 3 Step Two: Independent Artists / Groups The beauty about independent artists is that they have no record company or label (or they own the label themselves) and so you only need to send one email. Make sure to be absolutely certain that they don't have a label. Once you are certain try to find a contact address for them. This could either be an email or a letter. Some good places to check for contact points for independent artists are wikipedia, their official website, or myspace (or similar musical outlets such as last.fm). Once you have an email address you can send the email to them. I prepared a template email that can be used: Here's one of the more formal templates available and widely used for independent artists and/or groups: Step Three: Artists / Groups that are signed to a record label This does vary from label to label but ultimately your final email will be around the same. The first thing to do is find out which label the artist or group is with. This can most likely be found on wikipedia. Secondly, you need to go to the labels website and make sure if you can find any "terms of service" or "artist / license request" forms or information on either. (Usually located at the bottom of these sites, are links for the ToS and artist/license requests.) These will usually give you information on how a label feels about distributing the music of their artists. It can also tell you if the label will expect royalties for anything to do with any of their artists. If you can't find anything like this then you can move on. If you do find a form, and it doesn't mention royalties, then you should use that form to apply for request for music to be put into FFR. If none of the above is applicable then you'll need to move on to emails. The ideal route is to send two emails. One to the artist / group and one to the record label. If a band is linked with multiple labels and you aren't sure which label is the right one for what you are asking permission for, then you may have to email every single label and explain the situation. The following emails are what I suggest as templates for your two emails: Step Three and ¾: Artists / Groups that require Japanese Translation We now have a Japanese-translated version of the template (thanks to Jimerax for providing translation and XelNya for rediscovering it), that can assist in reaching out to those that may use Japanese as a first language. As with other templates, it is editable, but do keep in-mind that you should consider the accuracy of any edits made to the template, such-as the Author's name / Label name, as well as any music content that might be in Japanese or otherwise. Reminder that when sending out copies of the template, that you're copying the URL links correctly within the template. (right-click the link, copy link address, paste. Copying just the text may cause it to substitute dots or shortening that will break the link.) Copyright, Permission, Public Domain and You Information from this section was taken from this thread. |

Further details of permissions can be found in Post #2, #3, #4, or on their Wiki pages if applicable. Screenshots are saved on the Wiki when possible. Links Part 1 (To check) Links Part 2 (Missing information) Links Part 3 (Checked and added in the wiki) Links Part 4 (No permission) Links Part 5 Addendum: v9 Prep There are a great deal of things out-of-date with permissions in this thread. This Addendum serves as an area of things that are not updated in the main posts, but are posted in-thread and either still need to be added to the main post, or incorporated into the next version of this thread. For the meantime, they are listed here in a place where they can be referenced, instead of needing to browse the entire thread for content that isn't already listed in previous threads, or already in the main post of this thread. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing This Spreadsheet contains up-to-date information in a ctrl+f-friendly environment in which to search and observe the entire FFR catalog of permissions. Please try to use it instead of the v8 thread, as much of the content within the v8 thread is out of date. |

Changelog v8
As you can see, there were some changes made from the last permission thread :
- All artists links are listed in their wiki pages, as well as specific information concerning their permissions (only if that information could be found). This will make things way simpler and more accessible so everyone can help expanding musician profiles on the wiki. - Blanket and limited permissions are now merged together. This was done to make the list easier to browse and to update. And the difference between blanket and limited can be blurry. The list has been split in two to make sure I'm not over the character limit. Details concerning the permission are shown in pink. Some things to be done : - Adding everything in the wiki and a lot of musician pages need to be updated or expanded. Post 3 needs to be completed too. - Label permissions : listing bands under the label in the wiki. (considered but I'm uncertain about doing it) - Links to permissions in Post 5. - Double-checking everything from the v7 thread. - Go through the subforum to find missing permissions. - Making sure that every new permissions has been added to this thread. - Saving and adding screenshots and details of permissions in the wiki. - Improving/adding music genres. (where do most of these comes from too ?) A few things to verify about permissions : - Allison Crowe : "this thread" ? - Blitz Lunar : "link to song list, please" ? - Echeleon : probably a typo with Echelon (mystery) - Evelyn Bishop : permission for only one song ? - Gray Fox : FFR sim database lolwut - Missqulater : link is down - Hardcore Underground and NiTEFLARE : we don't have the proof of permission - Monstercat : Need to add details of permission - Other problematic perms : Aliceffekt, Anthrax!, Atomic Inc/Bass Piratez, PixlCrushr - Both blanket and limited : AnonyWolf, championanwar, cosMo, PurpleX, Sherry Kim, The Flashbulb, Thy Winter Shadow - NEKOTEK = Nekomimi ? I was also tempted to change the title of thread from "Artist Blanket Permissions v8" to "Permissions v8" since not all of them are blanket nor artists… Should we change the title ? Changed Thanks Dossar for letting me manage this thread. ;) Quote:
Still need to add the most recent ones I believe and the list will be up to date. Quote:

For the Monstercat permission, we are able to step anything of theirs that is on one of the albums.
ie. not anything by Krewella The permission was obtained on August 21, 2013 if you want to add that to the wiki or something. I can PM you the original screenshot too if you need it |

Re: Artist Blanket Permissions v8
Both have been added.
Also finished to update the list. Approx 10% less characters from the v7 thread. |
Re: Artist Blanket Permissions v8
Big updates, Silvuh proposed to me to include information from a handful of useful stickies related to permissions in general. Things have moved a lot :
Post 1 Now including the guide Obtaining Permissions and You! [v2], updated the figures (1.9 million users + link to the thread) Also including : Copyright, Permission, Public Domain and You Post 3 Finished formatting all the permissions last week. Post 5 Slowly started to find permission links, they will be added in any of the 4 sections. Post 6 Including Denied Artist Permission, went through the thread and even the old thread to find missing stuff. I'll also add some (30ish?) that I have tried to contact a few years ago. There's a changelog too (post 9) which was already present in post 6. It's a mess and will stay like that until I verify all of them. Also, thread title has been changed. |
Re: Permissions List and Information v8
I might put a bounty on songs from Consortium of Genius and/or The Fat Man.

Someone brought up Pygmy Guru's permission status and Firstaidvision was a release on Dramacore. We have blanket permission for Dramacore, but it's listed as an artist; Dramacore should be under label permissions.
|
Re: Permissions List and Information v8
Thanks, Dramacore is now listed under label permissions.
A couple more denied permissions that aren't listed : Nightwish Arch Enemy Opeth Symphony X Igorrr (got to talk with him, but ultimately had to ask to the label directly, weren't interested without getting a compensation of services - pretty much a week after Jake Ferguson asked too :/) Gorguts (got to talk with Steven, was interested, no chance for past Roadrunner albums but it could be possible for Obscura, From Wisdom to Hate and Colored Sands, could be worth another shot) Noisia Sonata Arctica (automatic response - out of office) Vektor (need to contact Earache Records directly, no response from the label) No responses from : Blotted Science Capsule Daft Punk Death From Above 1979 Disillusion Dream Theater Gatsbys American Dream Genghis Tron Gojira In Flames Insomnium Kalmah Nero Omnium Gatherum Wintersun Xanopticon |

I also moved SCI Recordings to label permissions unless someone has a good reason to think otherwise. It's not explicitly said, but it acts like a label. |

Just in case you don't see this, someone posted here that they're giving a blanket permission for their songs. Thought I might as well link you to it.

Re: Permissions List and Information v8
Got permission from Norland (used to go by MaryPoppinsMusic on YouTube). I found him several years ago when I started messing with FL Studio, he makes really nice FL tutorials. Most of his music is pretty trancey, so I don't know how steppable a lot of it is, but he recently released a free album called Frost that is really cool. I'm excited to try my hand at stepping Froskurinn Níels from the album. Obviously anything signed to a label we would have to acquire separate permission for if we wanted to use them (I think he has a few tracks on Silent Shore Records).

Meanwhile, Red Blaster contacted me today to add this label permission : NoCopyrightSounds (nearly 1,6 million subscriber on Youtube and 192,000 followers on SoundCloud) It's blanket by default since it's a copyright free label, this is their description on their Facebook profile : NoCopyrightSounds is a record label dedicated to releasing FREE music for the sole purpose of providing YouTubers/Video Creaters music which is safe from any copyright issues. We give everyone permission to use the music we release (even commercially) on their YouTube videos or any other media creation. The only requirement is that you must correctly attribute (credit) the artist and provide a link to the video on NCS of the track you have used. |

Just got blanket permissions from Evan Smith from Airia Music :) He'd just like to be notified when his songs are in game.
He mostly does EDM and Pop remixes, and there's some Trap in there, too. Aeons was also so kind as to give blanket permissions, as long as we link to their soundcloud :) They do mostly electronic music (electronica, deep house), trap, and some remixes :) I really like this remix they did of "Where Are U Now ft. Justin Bieber," which is absolutely crazy since I'm usually not a fan.

Re: Permissions List and Information v8
Cool permission PrawnSkunk! Potato-tan has been added.
As a side note, in theory, remixes are generally safe (fair use) but they tend to fall in a grey zone. Excerpt taken from wikipedia : "Unfortunately, there are no distinct lines between copyright infringement and abiding by fair use regulations while producing a remix.[9] However, if the work that is distributed by the remixer is an entirely new and transformative work that is not for profit, copyright laws are not breached. The key word in such considerations is transformative, as the remix product must have been either sufficiently altered or clearly used for a sufficiently different purpose for it to be safe from copyright violation." noname,
I'm an idiot and just read through permission issue artists to make sure mine weren't any of those and realized one was. Here's the ss of the email confirming use of two Robotboy's songs - it is limited, not blanket. edit: for the record, I did send a follow-up email to her about which track was chosen for #1, and that we would let her know when #2 was chosen and introduced into the game. Sent a gameplay video of the song in-game too, after it made it in. |

Why isn't this shit automated
Why isn't there a contract page where artists can digitally sign, define their conditions if there are any, and then the permission is automatically added to a database like the wiki Oh because Synthlight can't actually be bothered to do legal for this site, that's why |

Re: Permissions List and Information v8
In researching the permission of Deja & Bon for Wheelpower & Go, I currently do not have any answers to this yet. I've had a conversation with Prawnskunk a few months ago on the subject:
Assuming that acquiring permission is relatively self-explanatory, I'd like to know where such a permission came from. |
Re: Permissions List and Information v8
At the time I decided to send it in I had made an assumption that we had permission because of the prizing in the stepcon. I mean after all, since first prize in the stepcon meant that the winner got to pick a file to go directly in game, I had assumed we had permission for all of the songs used during the stepcon. In hindsight I should have double checked or further inquired about the permission (since I wasn't entirely sure about it myself, couldn't find anything relating to it in the permissions thread), but considering that mn also submitted a file for wheelpower & go to the batch, I figure other people assumed that the use of the song in the stepcon meant we had permission to submit it to the general batch as well.
Edit: ofc if permission does end up being denied by all means remove it from the game, and I apologize for the lapse in judgement regarding submitting a file when I was unsure about its song artist's permission. |
Re: Permissions List and Information v8
the website hasn't been updated since 2014 so there's a good chance we might not be able to get permission for it
I'll give it a try and see what happens, just in case we can't find anything in relation to finding out the original permission agreement |
Re: Permissions List and Information v8
I actually asked a while back about the Reol permission because Reol is super fun to listen to, and if we had blanket for that I'd chart the shit out of her new album.
(Which if you like Reol, but haven't heard it, it's amazing.) Edit: Guess I should clarify: I never was told what the extent of the permission was |
Re: Permissions List and Information v8
Good job to OP for organizing all this. And hot damn, I remember when we had only a handfull of folks making music. FFR has come a a ways.
Just one thing: as proud as I am to have been apart of all this at one point, I'm not very active anymore so please don't PM for MP3s. Besides, I no longer have Yaeger and I haven't spoken to Sherry Kim in years. ...speakinh of whom, did we ever manage to get her in game? Oh and.......did we lose TK Kazuya's permission? |

That reminds me, I asked Pronskunk about it a while back, and he never got back to me on it because of IRL stuff.
Anyone know what the deal with the Kradness / Reol permission is? Because their cover of "Children's War" was used in the stepcon, which means we probably have permission from them to an extent, just curious what it is. Because Reol put out an album, and nothing would get me charting faster than being able to do songs off it. (Side note: It's really good.) Though, maybe I should check with the company it was released through as well :/ /just when you have spare time please and thanks in advance :D |
Re: Permissions List and Information v8
update number 2
turns out I was a bit silly and forgot to send the email to the guy at avex, however he sent one to me this morning worth noting the phrase 'amount being offered' which could be an issue. |
Re: Permissions List and Information v8
Unless people are willing to donate money for basically accessing a label (which is quite possible), then this otherwise means no. Perhaps the next step is to ask how much and then ask the community if such a goal (whatever that amount is) is feasible. Need more info basically...don't call it quits just yet though.

Was digging through the permissions list as I'm finally gonna ask for a permission I've been wanting for a while and I saw that you're missing the screen shot for Zentra's permission
Here it is, I went and dug it up, and recaptured it so you have it. :D I looked for the Arrowhead permission in the messages folder, but it's not there so me being me, I probably deleted it like a dummy, as messages in the inbox anywhere ANNOYS me immensely. The fact this is here earnestly surprises me. Edit: Ok, not a total dummy, found it as it was in my google folder for these. Also feel I should note I did this because I saw I'd deleted the old images. Edit 2: Oh, I'm dumb and it's about links. Eh w/e probably better these are reposted either way. |

Sent an email to Maltine Records. Hopefully we can nab their permission ( ̄o ̄) . z Z (which means if I do get the perms, I can convert a few songs that I have stepped from that record for FFR ۹(๑•̀ω•́ ๑)۶ )
Edit: tried to see if I could find anything in regards to permissions (and policies) since it is a netlabel before sending an email to them requesting for permission. As far as I could see, I wasn't able to find the stuff that says we can have the go-ahead to use them without asking for permission. Can someone double-check the page to see if they can find anything in regards to their licensing? I'll wait for their response but in the meantime, here's the label link: http://maltinerecords.cs8.biz/index.html |
Re: Permissions List and Information v8
Bumping it because I'm still curious on the case with Maltine Records since it is a Netlabel. I'll send a follow-up email in a few days to them if there's no answer from them but considering that their releases can be downloaded from their site for free, I just want to know: do they still fall under the CC licenses? I just want to get that cleared up before I do anything else because I've been looking through their page and there's nothing indicating on what CC license they use.

Re: Permissions List and Information v8
I'm very disappointed. I can remove the permission screenshot and personnal information if the artist prefers to. Removing the page entirely is detrimental for both parties because it will cut a way for users to seek out for his music (links) and step artists to search within the wiki for artists to step.
I removed the screenshot and citation and kept the page to a minimum : http://ffr.wikia.com/wiki/Alias_Conrad_Coldwood Any way I can contact him directly or do you want to transfer the information ? |

Assuming what I'm seeing correctly, Trekkie Trax should be up for grabs according to the license it shows on the page. Someone double check? Edit: Okay. After looking at the licensing page, we are free to use the songs from TREKKIE TRAX \o/ http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.1/jp/ (from when I clicked at it from the licensing page) https://www.dropbox.com/s/d9roq1mpts...46-45.png?dl=0 |
