How seriously is Necro Posting taken on these forums?
 

incase you guys don't know Necro Posting means that someone posts in a VERY old/dead topic.
On another forum that I'm a member of they taking Necro'ing VERY SERIOUSLY!
I just want to see how much of a problem it is on these forums. (I'm sorry if this is the wrong category to post this in.)

I've never EVER heard someone use the term necro posting, and it sounds dumb as hell imo.
Unless it's a relevant bump, don't do it. No one is gonna like you for it.

It doesn't happen often. But when it does, the thread is then locked.

edit: Above is what happens to a dead topic that hasn't gotten posts in a long time.

It's not taken seriously because no one cares. Thread gets locked and that's that. Happens maybe once every couple weeks. It's usually an accident by a new member.

I bumped a 6.5 year old thread and got a day ban for it. There's really no good reason to bump something really old unless you're just trying to be a cock.

I've made the reference and the link at least a half dozen times on this very forum.

Bumping a thread with something very useful or legitimate to add to it isn't a problem here. That generally means that you're only going to be doing so, if you're bumping a thread in the suggestions/bug report forum, in the Critical Thinking forum, or a thread dedicated to a show/song/game in the media or video game forum that was a substantially large thread.

If you're bumping anything else, or anything that is more than a year old, chances are very good that you're not adding enough to it to have needed to bump it.

what dev said. depending on the thread, and if youre contributing to it like a sticky that nobody has posted in for a few months is fine. but to find a random old thread and to bump it with a post that is irrelevant is something we strongly dislike
