PARTlClPAT3 - 2009

DAY
OF
SILENCE

I believe this is a noble cause, and it affects people everywhere. All you have to do is be silent, on April 17th, 2009. Not even the whole day, just your school day, work day, or what have you. This is an annual protest that speaks (or doesn't) against sexual harrassment based on gender, sexual orientation, or sexual identity. It's very easy and it spreads the word well. When someone says hello, or anything of that sort, all you have to do is show them a slip that says this:

Quote:

Silent for Lawrence King: Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I am participating in the Day of Silence (DOS), a national youth movement bringing attention to the silence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies. My deliberate silence echoes that silence, which is caused by anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment. This year’s DOS is held in memory of Lawrence King, a 15 year-old student who was killed in school because of his sexual orientation and gender expression. I believe that ending the silence is the first step toward building awareness and making a commitment to address these injustices. Think about the voices you are not hearing today. What are you going to do to end the silence?
And it doesn't have to be exactly that, as long as people know what it's for. So, I would really appreciate it if some people could pitch in and do this. Only 8,000 people participated last year in the US. People close to me have suffered due to other's discrimination. I know a lot of you can relate.

It's really easy! Please help.

it's a good cause, but it has no effect on my school.
most of the people I showed the slip to were either like "hahaha ****in queer, he deserved it (rednecks)", "it seems like a good cause, but why be silent for an entire day just because he was gay? (retards who can't read the cause)", or they didn't say anything cause they were participating in it too (most of the girls/gay/bisexual guys)

but I'd do it if it had any affect on my school

Can't. I have a clan meet on that day (2nd round of Saints and Sinners tourney), and I'll be needing to use Ventrilo.

Also,

Yeah, way to stick to the plan, guys. That's how the injustices keep going is when you accept defeat to happen before it even happens.

What are you going to do to break the silence? I'm going to also be silent as well additionally too!

FLAWLESS VICTORY.

I think it would be better if everyone did something, erm, a bit more direct. To not talk, you have to have someone address you first. It's better, or, more widespread, if you get to do the first move. I guess you could try AGGRESSIVELY not talking to people, but that seems kind of weird.

Re: PARTlClPAT3 - 2009

Because I definitely feel the best way to speak out against discrimination is to not say anything at all.

Re: PARTlClPAT3 - 2009

My high school had a pretty large group of people participate last year. I think the cause is worthwhile but not talking is a bad way of spreading a message. Maybe there should be a day of yelling.
