Virtual Reality headsets

Anyone plan on getting a VR headset sometime this year? There are like a billion of them now.

I preordered an oculus, but depending on the price and release date of the vive I may get that instead.

Yeah, I'm really excited about getting this sort of thing. I think the vive is probably the best but it's hard to say for sure at this point.

I'm interested, but am going to watch/read some reviews once they are released. I'm a little turned off of the $600 price tag on the oculus though. Has anyone here ever tried them?

Haven't tried it, but I've talked with people who have. It seems really cool from what I've gathered. Although it might really mess with some people when they see themselves standing on walls or they actually think they've been shot, but I think I can handle that kind of thing.

I preordered Oculus Rift CV1 the second it was available

meh, I'll wait 10 years for the price of VR to drop and advance to point where I could just download it or something equally insane

Really wanted to get oculus for some dev stuff, but current exchange rate is a killer. Probably getting it (or vive depending on the price) in 1 or 2 years from now.

Re: Virtual Reality headsets

One of my roommates actually received a scholarship from oculus rift, and through some extra events, our house of 6 in senior year received like 4 oculus rift development kits for free and it was super cool.

Also went to a hackathon where the dk2 was debuted, and holy balls if you have the money, this is not something that you'd want to be missing out on. There's some specifications about virtual reality, such as (i think) you need to have a certain fps threshold to prevent motion sickness, as well as a very low latency to make sure the illusion isn't broken, which could potentially require a really good computer. Of course, there's some headset that allows you to use like an hTC phone or something as the screen, but idk.

The dk2 had an impressive field of view - I felt like i could look all the way to the side, and still see things. Again, as skeptical as "virtual reality" sounds, it's hella cool.

sorry mate when you are poor and can sit aside at most $200/yr. and no places are looking for workers in my area, it's pretty rough.

Re: Virtual Reality headsets

I hope it doesn't make me motion sick. I'm not sure what I would do in that case. Either sell it or try and build up some kind of tolerance.

Typically you get motion sickness from a disassociation from what you are physically feeling to what you are seeing and not the other way around.

Re: Virtual Reality headsets

usually the motion sickness is ok, especially for the apps/games that you control the camera with your head movements.

I did the roller coaster simulator, and oh my god i had to lay down for a bit after about 1 and a half repetitions of the track. Although, in general i'm pretty bad w/ getting motion sickness, for example if I watch someone play something like modern warfare for too long, I'll get motion sickness.

I'll get a vr headset when vr porn is more widely available otherwise I don't see the point

When CV1 pricing announced I shed a tear, damn Canadian dollar. I might go out for the vive later on, but I'd probably want to wait for Oculus' pricing to go down a bit.

Re: Virtual Reality headsets

300$ to 600$. It was expensive already. I'd rather buy a PS4 and an Xbone before I get a peripheral. Also, your computer also has to be able to run with the Oculus Rift, so i don't know what they're expecting, but hey. They could price it at 1000$ and people would still buy it. They knew it would sell and that's exactly what happened. Kinda sad, but eh, oh well.

Re: Virtual Reality headsets

Ugh, I don't really want to try it after i've seen anime like .hack//Sign and movies like Spy Kids 3: Game Over lol

Also I'm really surprised that Virtual Reality has been invented. I honestly didn't know until just now when I read the thread.

Re: Virtual Reality headsets

I'm just not really that interested in it. I understand the hype is just experiencing the technology so the lack of a real killer app (besides Japan's porn I guess) isn't that big a deal for most people but I just am not hyped for VR at all.

I REALLY want to learn to develop for these, there's so much potential waiting.

I sold my DK2 a while ago so that kinda evens out my CV1 purchase cost
